| #1Thank_DogAug 28, 2014 3:21:00 | I'm thinking of making a crossbow rogue with a level dip in fighter for the +2 to archery and to be proficient in heavy crossbows. Looking at the Crossbow Expert feat, however, I'm wondering what exactly would be the point of taking it. With 19-levels in rogue, I'd have no extra attacks so from my understanding, I wouldn't really be bothered about the loading requirement. It seems designed for a different purpose other than to really be a crossbow "expert", since it doesn't seem to really give much of any benefit to anyone else but the dual-wield squad. |

It doesn't benefit a Rogue who wants to snipe with it. But then you can make a reasonable case that such a character isn't really a crossbow "expert", they're just a generically good shot. |

Being able to shoot in melee is also rather nice. Note that this applies ot any ranged attack, including cantrips. Though the feat's a bit weak to be used just for combat casting. Especially since there are save cantrips.
Also, you can use handbow and shield (with the bonus attack). Letting you play a bow & board fighter. 5d6+25 damage, with +2 to hit is pretty solid.
It's slightly less helpful on rogues, they already get a bonus action thing. But 2 attacks at 1d6+Dex, is better then 1 attack at 1d6+Dex and advantage. It's also more reliable. Still, it would probably be better to get Dex to 20, then take the feat. |

If you do stick with the Heavy Crossbow the feat is less interesting other than no longer having disadvantage really. But I would recommend going with the hand crossbow method and getting that full extra attack going. I think it would pay off more than just a small increase in weapon dice.
EDIT: Mello explained this even better above. |
