Why do iron spikes cost so much?

One of my players wanted to get some iron spikes (after an incident in a 1E game the week before) and we were surprised at how expensive they are as listed - 10 spikes for 1 gp, that's about 10 times as much as I expected. Considering they are just a spike shaped piece of iron, not the sort of thing that would require much skill to make, I can't think of a reason for them to cost so much. Is there something I'm missing?

Having seen how much time and effort goes into making a medieval nail using authentic techniques, I would say the price is justified. There is a reason why medieval construction favoured using wooden pegs to join beams: they were easy to make and therefore cheaper.
