Why is Detect Magic a spell and not a cantrip?

I liked seeing the list of Wizard Cantrips expand and gaine a number of first level spells, but why is Detect Magic still a first level spell and not a cantrip? Some of those cantrips are actually pretty powrful for something a Magic User can do every round, while Detect Magic feels like the kind of ability a Wizard should be able to do as a passive ability all day long, not use a spell-slot for.
It just seems odd that a wizard can 'Chill Touch' every few seconds but to sniff-out magic, he has to meditate for an hour, every day.. then go back to creating minor illusions every few seconds.

It's a ritual.

So you can cast it every 10 minutes.

A level 2 Warlock can cast Detect Magic at will if they choose the Eldritch Sight invocation.  Wizards can cast it at will as a ritual but it takes 10 minutes to cast that way.  You don't have to prepare it though.

because it would suck loosing one of your few cantrips known to detect magic.

When I DM, detect magic is a function of the Spellcraft or Arcana skills. If someone were to actually use the spell, I'd tell them pretty much everything about the magic in the area. I do the same with Identify. A skill check can tell you a few things about a magic item. Identify tells you everything immediately.

Detect Magic and Identify are both rituals, so don't need to be prepared by most classes with the spell available to them. These are meant to be utility spells and not something you'd likely cast during combat so it makes sense to leave them as 1st level ritual spells rather than the limited combat-use oriented cantrip. Also as stated since they're rituals they don't need to be prepared or use up a spell slot if used as a ritual.

Sure it takes 10 minutes but it can be done as part of the post-combat "search for lewt" period after combat. While other classe the wizard or bard casts detect magic. If you read the sidebar on the Weave it talks about how Detect Magic works and generally how spellcasters interact with magic (and they note that FR calls it the Weave but other settings may have other names). They even say not all casters visually view the Weave the same way but the game mechanics work the same.

The sorcerer, ranger, paladin, eldritch knight fighter and the arcane tricker rogue don't have ritual casting so would have to use a spell slot or take the ritual caster feat. The classes most likely to want and utilize Detect Magic (wizard, bard, cleric, druid) already have ritual casting built in.

Detect Magic should cost something, otherwise it just gets used constantly and makes things like illusions and charms very hard to insert into an adventure. By making it cost a spell slot, players only use it when they have real suspicians and you can better reward that as a DM. As a cantrip, it becomes rote and nothing special when it works.
