| #1VilhjalmrJun 12, 2015 6:56:39 | We've hit our first rules debate in our 5E game...
When a Wild Mage surges, does the original spell go off before the surge happens, or is it replaced entirely?
Our old-school members tend on the side of "In 2e it replaced the spell." But unfortunately all we have to go on is the line that the spell goes off "After casting", no true clarification one way or the other as to the result of the initial spell.
As a DM, I'M fine with general consensus... Our 2nd DM however would like something more substantial. Short of an answer from WotC themselves I'm not sure what he would count, but a solid, sourceable ruling should suffice.
Thanks for your time and consideration.

1: You cast a spell. 2: You do a wild magic surge. |

| #4Lucas_BlackstoneJun 12, 2015 7:12:47 | There is nothing saying that the spell that causes the wild surge is replaced so it is not replaced. As a sidenote, I think that would make the wild mage really terrible to have the spells not work, but that is simply opinion.
There is no special ruling for it because the rules already cover it. For the spell to be replaced, it would say so. Instead it says to roll on the chart after the spell is cast. So the spell is cast, then roll on the chart after the spell is cast. Part of casting the spell is the result of the spell. The result of the spell does not occur during a different part of the turn. |
