Wizard Spellbook Question

Ok so...

At level 1 the wizard gets 6 spells. Then he picks 2 more spells every level. He can also copy spells he finds to his book, potentially giving him access to all spells available for wizards in the game.

However he can only have a number of spells prepared equal to his Int Modifier + Wizard Level. He can pick his list of prepared spells from his spellbook during a long rest. He can pick spells from his prepared list to assign to spell slots during a long rest as well.

Is it just me or is having a list of 'prepared spells' redundant? You can switch them around at will during a long rest, which is when you pick which ones to assign to spell slots anyway, de facto giving the wizard the choice of any spell in his spellbook to add to his spell slots, by passing the need to keep track of which are prepared.

Actually I guess this is only an issue if your spell slots are greater than your prepared spells and you want to have a different spell assigned to each slot...which is pretty marginal for most serious wizards I see...unless you're dealing with a multiclass wizard who has spellslots from another class. Then I suppose that would make a bit more sense, even if it's a bit marginal?

You don't assign spells to a spell slot during a rest.

You assign prepared spells to a spell slot only when you cast a spell.

Ok that was a much needed clarification! That makes the wizard so much more flexible than I thought!

I guess there's also an interaction between the spellbook and the prepared spells to the extent that you may be seperated from the spellbook.
