I get the feeling that this type of question should be in the FAQ at some point.

Anyway, let's say I have a Wizard who is level 4 and he decides to MC Paladin for 2 levels, becoming the equivalent of a 5th level spell caster, according to the table in the multiclassing section of the PHB.  Which of the following scenarios is correct:

1) He finds a scroll of fireball and, since he has access to level 3 spell slots, he can spend time and gold to add this spell to his spellbook.

2) He finds a scroll of fireball and, since he is a level 4 Wizard, he cannot spend time and gold to add this spell to his spellbook, but can wait until gaining one more level of Wizard to do so.

3) Assume he is adventuring as a WIzard 3|Paladin 2 and he gains another level of Wizard.  He now gains access to level 3 spell slots and can pick Fireball from the Wizard level 3 spell list.

4) Assume he is adventuring as a Wizard 3|Paladin 2 and he gains another level of Wizard.  He still cannot pick level 3 Wizard spells because he is still only a Wizard 4 even though his effective character level is 6.

Addendum: If we were speaking about a 3rd level spell with the ritual tag however, I would allow the wizard to copy it into their spellbook. They would not be able to prepare the spell, or cast it using spell slots, but they can cast it as a ritual from their spellbook. Upon gaining level 5 in the Wizard class, I would allow the character to then prepare the spell, and cast it normally.

This is consistant with the Ritual Caster feat.
