Has there been any comment on the strange amounts of experience required to level according to the chart on page 10 of the basic rules? In short, things seem to progress fine until a strange hiccup from level 5 to 6, and then fall apart to apparent randomness after level 10.

Are the level progression numbers in error, or are they a known problem?

I’ve attached a chart to help illustrate the issue.

It does seem rather unusual that the deltas actually *decrease* in one place: between 10-11 (takes 21000) and 11-12 (takes only 15000). I don't know if I'd call it a 'problem', but you aptly describe it as 'wonky'.

All I know is that I like the steeper curve; it will work better with my simultaneous advancement multi-class system.

The drop in increase, at level 12, is peculiar though.

Hello

Taking this thread along a bit more. The leveling exercise were used to is that a number of encounters equal to the avearge level of 4 characters will give enough exp to go up a level. Based on the exps for the monsters what i found is that at Level one you just need 6 encounters to go to level two, at Level two its 5.3 and level three its 10. This is based on the exp rewards of 200 for CR1, 450 for Cr2, and 700 for Cr3.

Does any one know if the exp table is a typo?

I am beyond exhausted at the moment, so it is almost a certainty that I made a obvious and embarrassing mistake (I hope someone can find it if I did). But I calculated the number of encounters needed, at challenging difficulty, to gain the XP to reach the next level. This is using the Legends & Lore chart that Mike Mearls  posted on 7/7.

Level 1 to 2 needs 3.0 encounters
Level 2 to 3 needs 4.3 encounters
Level 3 to 4 needs 8.2 encounters
Level 4 to 5 needs 12.7 encounters
Level 5 to 6 needs 18.8 encounters
Level 6 to 7 needs 18.0 encounters
Level 7 to 8 needs 18.3 encounters
Level 8 to 9 needs 20.0 encounters
Level 9 to 10 needs 20.0 encounters
Level 10 to 11 needs 21.0 encounters
Level 11 to 12 needs 15.0 encounters
Level 12 to 13 needs 16.7 encounters
Level 13 to 14 needs 16.7 encounters
Level 14 to 15 needs 17.9 encounters
Level 15 to 16 needs 18.8 encounters
Level 16 to 17 needs 18.8 encounters
Level 17 to 18 needs 22.2 encounters
Level 18 to 19 needs 20.0 encounters
Level 19 to 20 needs 22.7 encounters

I don’t have a comparison to previous editions, but does this seem like a lot? Regardless, if they are trying to speed up 10+, they’ve done so except for a strange blip from 17-18. And why does 10+ not include 10 to 11? And I'm still not sure why some levels would be equal to each other.

@mikemearls : Level 10 - 11 XP: It's by design. Data shows campaigns stop at 10, we're trying to speed up 10+ a bit so groups can reach 20 in a campaign

@mikemearls : Part of thinking behind that is it looks like campaign length might be dictated by how long the group can consistently meet.

@mikemearls : Interestingly enough, groups seemed to want to level much faster than we expected, and campaigns were shorter than we expected, too.

@PunPunKobold : I made a homebrew setup for 4e that lasted 10 levels but still gave you paragon and epic choices. Any info on condensing 5e?
@mikemearls : there'll be a quick progression XP table in the DMG
@Garmelbon : Will there be a table that allows for slower progression in the DMG as well?
@mikemearls : Yes

@SwampRob : My group has been playing since 1e, and we level up roughly every 3 - 4 sessions, or about once per month.  There's no hurry.

@mikemearls : a lot of gamers are in college or high school - the average lengths seem to match up with semesters and school years

@Hadan_Ashcroft : this makes no sense at all. We're trying to speed leveling up 10+. WHAT? From level 10 to 11 is a bigger gap not less. See OP
@mikemearls : the break may have been 11 - 12, sorry not looking at table, just drawing on design intent.
@mikemearls : XP needed should level off, increase as lower % of total at 10/11+

@grobolom : if you want people to play past level 10, wouldn't you want to speed up levels 1-10 instead?
@mikemearls : It's a little complex, since we don't have full data or complete insight
@mikemearls : we sped up 1 - 3, keep 4 - 10 about the same, tried to put 11+ on a faster schedule

@mikemearls : do people stop because of time, or because of complexity? If time, solved. If complexity,3-10 still satisfies

The best thing to do here is accept that it's blatant social engineering, and move on.

It does start to form a pattern at the end (30k/30k/40k/40k/50k), that can be extrapolated forward fairly easily:

21 - 405000

22 - 465000

23 - 525000

24 - 595000

25 - 665000

26 - 745000

27 - 825000

28 - 915000

29 - 1005000

30 - 1105000

I personnel like it.

As new adventurers you need to learn fast or die.

Then it takes more experiance to go up.

Sort of what I did in my other game system, fast track to 3rd, normal to 9th, and then slow pace from there on up.
