| #4Silverblade_The_EnchanterJul 12, 2007 20:16:00 | Workign on character write ups and art for the main characters, her'es the first one (yes it's my fave character, lol!) http://www.silverblades-suitcase.com/wildspace/silverblade.htm |
| #5Silverblade_The_EnchanterJul 15, 2007 22:36:04 | Part #3 is up ![]() or here' it is for ya Adventures in WIldspace #3...continuing on from "Aftermath of a Battle" Blood and Gore! (not sure on moderation regarding violence, to me, it's tame, comic book stuff, but fair warning just in case) |
| #6Silverblade_The_EnchanterJul 17, 2007 16:31:28 | Character #3 ![]() Character 3 This is the lady who's lying dead in adventure #3 ![]() |
| #7Silverblade_The_EnchanterJul 18, 2007 22:45:14 | Character #4: Master Kreg, ship's master. he's a hadozee, I don't like the rules for them so I altered 'em! ;) -They're supposed to be noted for being "solid muscle" but get no strength bonus, duh? -Wing flaps should make armour mostly impossible to wear. -So I gave 'em +2 Str, +4 Natural AC, can't wear armour. Also I preffer the more monkey look of original 2nd ed hadozee. ![]() |
| #8Sigurd_van_NorhusenJul 20, 2007 14:28:26 | Too much text, imo. Character info is nice, but story first. |
| #9jaidJul 20, 2007 23:12:52 | the comic (ie the story) itself has very little text. certainly not an excessive amount. the character sheets are not the comic itself, they're more like just extra information... it's handing you some background information so that you can make a little bit of sense out of the comic, i would say. |
| #10Silverblade_The_EnchanterJul 21, 2007 7:41:47 | Yeah, the character sheets are to explain background that's not obvious from a cartoon-strip alone, and are thus additonal, plus you can use 'em as NPCs in your games if wish ![]() |
| #11Silverblade_The_EnchanterJul 21, 2007 17:31:15 | Adventure #4! |
| #12Silverblade_The_EnchanterJul 22, 2007 18:38:09 | And the heroes' ship; "The Mindful Cutlass" Will do renders/diagrams detailing ship internal lay out at some point too ![]() The Mindful Cutlass Cartoonified version, different style than other cartooning though. ![]() And a straight 3D render with some post work ![]() |
| #13Silverblade_The_EnchanterJul 26, 2007 5:06:29 | "Mindful Cutlass" Layout: |
| #14jersey_cowboyJul 27, 2007 0:29:21 | Pretty nifty. Hope this one keeps going! |
| #15Silverblade_The_EnchanterJul 27, 2007 2:30:59 | Well, I hope so too ;) Plan on making a looooooot more! |
| #16Silverblade_The_EnchanterJul 28, 2007 19:22:48 | Parts #7 & #8, and Character: Decurion Martilus. I'm refining the cartooning style, any opionons on it? ![]() Not too happy with Decurion Martilus but alas, I can only get banded mail armour to fit a mdoel that looks too skinny in uppe rarms, meh. And I'm using earthy language, sorry, but hard bitten adventurers and evil scum would NOT say "oh la la I hurt my toe!"...jeesh ;) I am writing it though to avoid the more unpleasant words, as I realize open forum, not everyone is as broad minded as me etc ;) |
| #17jaidJul 29, 2007 20:09:58 | is anyone else seeing blank spoilers when they open those? (no big deal, it's not like i can't go to the website directly or anything =S ) [edit] woah... i would seriously recommend either picking a different armor type for him, or ripping the shoulder pads out of that armor and separating them or something, because that picture looks disturbingly wrong... just... wrong... (also, i think the helmet looks a little weird, and is the crest on it supposed to be sideways? i mean, if it's supposed to be like an actual roman helmet, the crest should be front to back, shouldn't it? whereas that appears to be side-to-side... [/edit] |
| #18Silverblade_The_EnchanterJul 30, 2007 3:53:03 | he looks a tad odd as he's shortened, since he's a dwarf ;) only problem with that is his arms look too thin....toss up between a far more bulky figure and no banded amrour, or this and banded amrour. That IS what banded armour looks like, fyi, or to be precise, ROMAN banded armour: lorica segmentata. The shoulder plates are not custom formed like plate armour, so when you move your arm back or forward, they move like that, as they are attached to two leather straps, they aren't custom plate fitted to the upper arm. http://blog.arlt.co.uk/blog/ErmineStreetGuard/_archives/2004/7/20/108790.html have alook through that stuff, Ermine Street Guard, UK based Roman re-enactment group ![]() Their main site seems down unfortnately, fantastic stuff. The crest is also the correct way. In the actual Roman legions, a decurion was either an officer in charge of a cavalry squad, or, the equivalent of a corporal in charge of an 8 man infantry squad. In my game world, he is a "decurion", which is the equivalent of a centurion, but, the title is reserved for the use of centurions in charge of special units, be they cavalry, artillery or other. So, he has a centurion's helm, which has the crest going transverse, as a sign of rank. In fact his equipment is standard issue for the legions of my setting: adamantine banded armour weapon, magical though as he's an NCO. charisma helm, force shield ring and anti-disease necklace, again, items for centurions and higher officers. Very old, very powerful nation, who've built up such gear over 3 millenia for their legions...folk condemend to death toil in their adamantine mines, which is a slow death sentence, providing the material for the arms and armour which is part of why the legions are so feared. K? ![]() |
| #19jaidJul 30, 2007 13:36:14 | i still say you should rip off the shoulderpads or something... it just looks horribly wrong, and it's extremely distracting, imo... |
| #20Silverblade_The_EnchanterAug 01, 2007 9:30:09 | Parts #9, and Character: Colour Sargeant Oakbrow. Also alternate version of Decurion Martilus, not sure which is best...in renders though alternate version's breastplate would be darker, to resemble adamantine Also alternate version fo part #5 I'm not sure whether "large checkering + more cartoon look" or smaller checkering less cartoon look" is best...also the checkring often darkens an image too much, and isn't eesily fixed, even with photoshoping. |
| #21Silverblade_The_EnchanterAug 02, 2007 16:05:03 | Part 10! ![]() Adventures in Wildspace! Part 10 ![]() Note: What Silverblade actually saw with his Detect Magic spell, was a special spell fire off, when the cleric got struck his death blow, which prevented his actual death, and allowed the Ring of Regeneration to start repairing his injuries. The cleric had obviously cast this before battle, in case of being killed. Just because he is evil, doesn't mean he's stupid! |

| #27jaidMar 29, 2008 21:07:08 | is there any way you can make the speech... err... pointy things? whatever those things are that you use instead of speech bubbles... anyways, you think you can make them grainy or something? they're too smooth for your style of rendering on the finished product i think (just noticed that now... go figure...) |
| #28Silverblade_The_EnchanterMar 30, 2008 0:34:11 | hm, it would probably make the text harder to read, I think, being grainy? ![]() EDIT ok altered it a bit ![]() i made speech bubbles partially transparent, and took away scroll form banner what ye think? ![]() (refresh page) |
| #29jaidMar 30, 2008 20:41:45 | looks good ![]() though i'm a little confused why he wouldn't resurrect lady antilas and then she could help out the tortured person... |
| #30Silverblade_The_EnchanterMar 31, 2008 0:25:09 | ![]() 'Cause Lady Antilas can't cast Raise Dead, that's why ;) http://www.silverblades-suitcase.com/wildspace/lady_antilas.htm 8th lvl cleric, lvl 1 fighter :D |
| #31jaidMar 31, 2008 16:28:06 | the person appeared to be alive (sufficiently alive to moan in pain, at least)... and lady antilas can certainly cast cure X wounds, i hope =P (also, to clarify: lady antilas could presumably benefit from having the scroll used *on* her, not *by* her =P ) |
| #32Silverblade_The_EnchanterApr 01, 2008 10:45:40 | *mutters darkly about casting Reverse Viagra on pesky nit pickers!* :P The victim is horribly tortured...she'd need a Heal and/or Regenerate type of effect. One thing I've done for a long time in my games, it to show that CURE spells help heal damage, but often leave scars, as it's not a Heal or Regenerate. If you've been incinerated, slashed ot bits...i.e. taken massive amount of your hit points, and get "cured", way I always saw it was like mostly undoing or healing stuff, but greater the injury severity, more chance of scaring etc, and it only fills in minor losses, it won't help for lost digits, wrecked organs/eyes etc. So, victim could be aided by Captain Kreg's wand of Cure Light WOunds, or the many potions folk carry, but it's NOT gonna undo being...well, your imagination can fill in what may have been done to her.... Same with earlier in story, where some injured crew member has gotten a bad injury, and it was cauterized..though folk have potions and Cure Light Wound wand...that's iffy versus losing a hand/fingers etc etc. Plus, Lady Antilas died honourably in battle...she's a cleric of Odin...she died according to her faith, she probably would not want to come back as it would be "unfair". get my rationale' ? ![]() I do things for reasons, even if you don't see 'em ;) |
| #33jaidApr 01, 2008 13:58:39 | hey, us nitpickers keep things internally consistent! (or at least, point out where things look like they might not be internally consistent =P ) interesting take on healing though, i kinda like it ![]() (not sure raise dead makes sense as the choice compared to, say, a heal spell, which actually cures mental ailments, but i guess when your cleric has a terminal case of sword-in-the-face and you only have 1 specific scroll, you can't afford to be too picky =P ) |
| #34Silverblade_The_EnchanterApr 03, 2008 5:01:14 | Remember he's using a Limited WIsh scroll, he knows it's got limitations, but "folk in the setting" don't know the actual rules, just rough knowledge of limitation, so, he's pretty sure it could heal the woman, but using it to raise the cleric...hm...he's nto sure on that. it's not a question of "X spell level", folk wouldn't know/think like that, more rough limits and also, real fear of screwing a WIsh up, plus wasting it if Lady Antilas doens't want to come back. Watch it, or I'll have Jaid as a kender character being neogi food! :p |
| #35jaidApr 03, 2008 19:46:36 | Watch it, or I'll have Jaid as a kender character being neogi food! :p [kender mode] wow, i've never met a neoghi before! do they really walk on the walls just like real spiders? i bet it would be really fun to be able to go on the ceiling. and man, getting a pet umber hulk, that would be real neat. uncle trapspringer says... [/kender mode] nah, you'd have to rename the character =D (Jaid isn't a very good kender name, imo =P) |
| #36Silverblade_The_EnchanterApr 05, 2008 5:07:25 | New character write up: Sush'lik, illithid renegade! http://www.silverblades-suitcase.com/wildspace/sushlik.htm Sush'lik and since this is an on going story, somethings are of course, not revealed yet... ![]() ![]() |
| #37jaidApr 06, 2008 19:35:02 | just a couple of things: technically (if you're houseruling that's fine, just letting you know) a mindflayer who takes psion levels has to take telepath as their discipline. (or rather, their discipline is already chosen). if you're ignoring that just because you prefer otherwise that's fine too, but that's not how it works according to the almight RAW (which isn't really as important as making the game awesome, anyways, but just pointing that out so that at least you know if you're breaking the rules... i am of the opinion there's nothing inherently wrong with bending or even breaking the rules as long as you're aware of the fact that you're doing so ;) ) the other thing is that the psicrystal is actually 12 HD (Arguably 13). neither are particularly likely to have a huge effect on anything though =P |
| #38Silverblade_The_EnchanterApr 14, 2008 10:45:30 | Part #16...the evil cleric is brought to he hold of the heroes' ship and imprisoned, but... PART 16 ![]() AUTHOR'S NOTE: Giff, like Sargeant Oakbrow love guns and explosives, hence, to them damp, useless Smoke Powder, is a horrible thing, so they use "Damp Smokepowder!" as a curse. Original 3d Render ![]() |
| #39KerythApr 21, 2008 15:29:28 | Really good so far. Just curious though, what program(s) you're using to make these in. |
| #40Silverblade_The_EnchanterApr 21, 2008 22:01:11 | Keryth, thanks! ![]() Ok, people are Poser, same for most of their gear (nearly all of the clothes, morphs etc are from DAZ3D). Some gear is made in RHino3D, and I make the ships and ship weapons in Rhino too. Scenes are assembled and rendered in Vue6 Infinite. The cartooning is done in postwork, most in Paint Shop Pro, some stuff in Photoshop. To get the cartoon effect I mostly use the "India Ink" plugin from Flaming Pear, but some times mix in some Photoshop actions ![]() |
| #41KerythApr 22, 2008 8:30:10 | Thanks for the info! And keep up the good work! |
| #42Silverblade_The_EnchanterApr 24, 2008 19:04:44 | messign around, learning more art stuff, I created two more "realistic" renders of the characters, not perfect, 1st one is a "studio" render, to test, but I quite like it ![]() |
| #43jaidApr 26, 2008 19:26:59 | wow, that giff looks huge... mind you, it's probably at least *partially* due to the fact that he's standing next to a halfling and a dwarf, but still, it really gives you some appreciation for just how big those giff really are... |
| #44Silverblade_The_EnchanterApr 27, 2008 4:55:03 | Yup, they are massive ;) hence my isistance on ships being suitable for them, lol, no way they can use decks less than 7' high really, as it's also a question of how damn bulky and broad they are. In RL, pal of mine is 300+lb,only 6'1" but absolutely massive, that's without doing weight trianing, jeesh. Seriously, the guy could be by a pro bodybuilder or powerlifter if he wanted. He has to turn sideways to get through most doors, so, giff would fair even worse ;) |
| #45Silverblade_The_EnchanterMay 07, 2008 14:08:43 | part #17 part #17 ![]() Silverblade, concerned for the torture victim's state of mind, had previously asked Sargeant Oakbrow to leave (after initially asking him to come down), to spare her any fear, and has left himself, to let Aletta help her clean up and dress. They didn't recognize her under the dirt and blood etc. Bit hard to recognize a friendly aquaintance when they are, er, well...looking like a Post Mortem exam! ![]() |
| #46Silverblade_The_EnchanterMay 11, 2008 21:03:38 | Part #19 |
| #47Silverblade_The_EnchanterMay 15, 2008 7:43:44 | Part #21 part #21 ![]() AUTHOR'S NOTE: In the heat of battle, folk do run or magically escape. On a planet, it's usually much easier to see them, and in Wildspace, mostly there's no where to run to (short of Teleporting). However, in asteroid fields, folk can jump from one rock to another if they are some what close (you can jump very far in Wildspace, no air resistance, and gravity is often weird), or use magic. Thus fights in such areas can turn into complex three dimensional hunts and skirmishes. |
| #48Silverblade_The_EnchanterMay 23, 2008 20:32:42 | Part #23 and # 24 PART #23 ![]() AUTHOR'S NOTE: Ungallant has no love of orcs, in fact he plain hates them! But, he's capable of subduing his fury to prevent hasty actions, which is why he's much more than his orc father ever could be! It's also why Coulegard trusts him. |
| #49mortellanMay 24, 2008 2:00:29 | Incredible comic, silverblade! Your style is mesmerizing. Funny I would have never found this comic if not for Wizard's inept forum reorganization. Keep up the good work. Kudos. |
| #50Silverblade_The_EnchanterMay 24, 2008 7:25:00 | Mortellan, *bows* Cheers, mate! ![]() Well, as they say, there's a every cloud has a silver lining ;) I'll need to consoildate my Spelljammer and Dark Sun art posts, too, sigh. |
| #51KynesisMay 26, 2008 9:39:35 | Keryth, I'm pleasantly surprised with the look of the comic; I did wonder how you made it & Poser did come to mind - actually crafting each person and their gear though... great to see there's a source to short-cut that, it looks really good. It might be worth reposting some of your comic-building tips in the general forums, I'm sure they'd be well received. |
| #52jaidMay 26, 2008 15:59:08 | I'm pleasantly surprised with the look of the comic; I did wonder how you made it & Poser did come to mind - actually crafting each person and their gear though... great to see there's a source to short-cut that, it looks really good. his art advice is found on his website, including a tutorial iirc. in truth, the best advice is probably to download some free software and start messing around with it until you figure out how to make it do what you want anyways, i suspect =P |
| #53Silverblade_The_EnchanterMay 26, 2008 16:01:17 | Kynesis, Thank you! ![]() Well I don't "build" them completely! (the Poser people's grear ) lol good grief no, ack! that would drive you nuts and take years to do ![]() I buy lots of stuff over the years from DAZ3D.com and a few other sites, building a library of suitable clothing, weapons, textures etc, and some bits I build myself. Then I assemble the person with clothing, weapons I like, apply morphs to shape their face, tweak materials. Then I import them into Vue, and this is the hard bit: I make libraries for each person, so ALL their materials will be the same, and converted to Vue materials rather than left as just plain Psoer import materials. SO throughout the comics their mateirals will be the same I have done tutorials on my site explaining howI do this stuff, http://www.silverblades-suitcase.com/tutorials/htm/index.htm but dunno if it should be posted on other forums as they are not art, Dark Sun or Spelljammer forums (which is what most of my stuff is) ? ![]() |
| #54bigmacOct 11, 2008 19:04:34 | I make libraries for each person, so ALL their materials will be the same, and converted to Vue materials rather than left as just plain Psoer import materials. SO throughout the comics their mateirals will be the same Hmm. So does this mean that your characters will always wear the same clothes and have the same weapons or do you have alternatively equiped versions in your libraries too? I have done tutorials on my site explaining howI do this stuff, http://www.silverblades-suitcase.com/tutorials/htm/index.htm I'm not a moderator (at least not here) but I would think that a link in your forum signature would be a good way to get your message across to any people who like your work. |
| #55Silverblade_The_EnchanterOct 15, 2008 4:34:22 | Only as long as I want 'em too :p I can change the clothes and such, but it's important to keep coherence across it all. I use Poser to build people, as the "generic start point" then pose them, save a snew version. What's hard ot do is build the generic in Poser, make the materials look right in Vue (which final scene is rendered in), or take time to pose in Poser. Once I've made a figure I'll save it, to re use later, same with materials. takes lot of effort to make 'em ![]() |
| #56bigmacOct 16, 2008 15:27:38 | Only as long as I want 'em too :p Consitency is important - I agree. In TV shows characters often have the same clothing for an entire series. But they do have the occasional special episode, where a character has to disguise themselves or has to dress up in a smart uniform. For a D&D story, I could imagine a rogue that wears a mask when on "operations", but shows their face when they in a safe location with friends. I think the same sort of thing could be done with a fighter's helmet or shield and/or any character's weapons. I suppose if you had a really serious fight in your comic, you could have Colour Sargent Oakbrow throw his shield at an enemy, pull out his aquebus and fire it, and then pick up a random weapon from a dead body and finish the fight with two weapons. You could also do several longswords for Luin of Bral, so that the flames could be off or on and pointing in different directions. Other people could have magical items that glow or do other things when certain powers are activated. I'm not saying you should do that, but I think those are the sorts of visual changes that might add to the plot of an individual story. I use Poser to build people, as the "generic start point" then pose them, save a snew version. It does sound like a lot of work. So I think you would want to have a very good plot hook that would justify the extra work. |
| #57Silverblade_The_EnchanterOct 16, 2008 18:08:55 | Yup, lot of work ![]() Most "Poser comic creators" are doing simple comic strips (to save them a great dela of hassle and for their own art style), I'm doing more graphic novel work, so it's more work. anyway I'll get bakc to this comic and do more, have another epsiode done but, doing lot of other stuff at moment and RL is being a pain :D |
| #58bigmacOct 17, 2008 19:53:16 | Yup, lot of work Thanks for the info.
