| #1ReiusFeb 24, 2015 13:12:13 | What is the unifying theme or metastory of Spelljammer? I've always really liked the setting but never owned any of the main books. I'm wanting to incorporate some elements into my current 4e game, but I'm not sure what makes SJ different (other than the flying ships and stuff). I mean, Planescape has "philosophers with clubs" and the power of belief, Dark Sun is about survival in a harsh post-apocalyptic landscape, Eberron is pulpy and punky. I've heard Spelljammer be compared to the Age of Discovery or Age of Sail -- but how does this actually play out in SJ campaigns? Is it about exploring new worlds and new civilizations? Why? Is there a reason PCs should be exploring these different worlds or is the whole thing just another big kitchen sink campaign setting? There must be more to it than just funky looking ships, space hamsters and elves/orcs in space. (Even if that's all there is, it's still cool to me.)
If I want to learn more, I guess I should look for the Spelljammer boxed set? Or what would be the best sourcebooks?
Also, can anyone recommend some good SJ modules? I have Crystal Spheres (SJA3, I think) and it looks like it might work as an introduction. |

Anyway, my players seem to be really enjoying the weirdness of sailing the phlogiston. And making stuff fit with 4e is fun for me. They're in the middle of Crystal Spheres and are about to journey to Greatspace to confront T'laan.
So, thanks again. Maybe I'll see you on those other forums. |
