Spelljammer Storage Question...

Greetings fellow gamers. So I am currently working on a 3.5 edition Spelljammer campaign. The party is going to start as groundlings and eventually they will find a spelljammer ship and then it will be off to the stars. So I have noticed that all of the ships have a tonnage, which is the ships size. The ships also have tons listed in the descriptions as storage space.

My question is, how much stuff can fit into a ton of storage space? How much food and water? How many coins? I know some of my players will end up asking these questions. How would you rule in this situation? Thanks for the info.

Sadly, I don't have any of the Spelljammer books, so I can't just look it up for you. Fortunately, they are available, and the campaign setting is pretty reasonably priced, I think. I've looked at several deck plans for different ships online, and none of them seem to be really consistent on deck-area-to-tonnage ratios, so the way I figure it, as long as you're consistent, it should be fine to just make a judgment call.

I, myself, would probably use Traveller's 1.5 x 1.5 x 3 meter (or 5 x 5 x 10 feet) volume definition of "ton," and then design my own ships, but that might not work if your players want to design their own ships, as well. In which case I'd probably go back to the recommendation of picking up the campaign setting.

EDIT: Then again, the smallest of Traveller's commonly used ships are about 100 tons, so maybe that wouldn't work.
