Its still in a raw, rough-draft format, and a lot of work needs to be done to turn it into a nice article. Here's a sneak peak ![]() What’s in a Cargo Hold New Rule - does this sound reasonable? Generally, this feels about right to me. Loading/Unloading: it takes a team of 2 longshoremen 1 hour to properly load or unload 1 ton (40 cubic feet) of cargo. Assume 1 team can work per every 50 tons of space; any more & they get in each other’s way. 12-hour shifts. It takes 4-6 days to unload & then load a tradesman, 8 days for a squidship, 9 days for a hammership, and 10+ days for a whaleship. Note: This rule needs to be blown out further, but in essence, any ship is stuck at dock for 1-2 weeks for cargo transfers ![]() Spices – salt, cinnamon, peppers, herbs (cooking), tobacco, drugs, safflower Food – Grain (barley, oats, wheat, rye), beans, ham, bacon, sugar, molasses, tea, coffee, chocolate, honey, dried/salted/smoked meat (beef, pork, fish, poultry), rice, dried fruit, fruit in syrup, apples, limes, oranges, bananas, nuts, tubers (carrots, turnips, potatoes, Swedes, onions), jam (various fruits), seed (vegetables, fruit trees, grain, legumes), cheese, mollusks & crustaceans, Exotic Foods – lion meat, shrieker mushroom cap, caviar, country (salty) ham, ostrich eggs Cloth – wool, fur, cotton, flax, silk Beverages – Ale, beer, rum, whiskey, water, wine (common/fine) Metal (ore or ingots) – Mithril, Adamantite, copper, silver, gold, platinum, iron, nickel, steel, bronze, brass Building Materials – hardwood/softwood (planks or timbers), exotic wood, stone (granite, marble, limestone, sandstone, chalk, flint, slate), bricks, rope Minerals – gemstones (cut & uncut), Rare – Spell Components, books, artwork, ornaments, herbs (medical), magic items, magical materials, magical essence (liquid or powder), curiosities from the far edges of explored space. Assuming the cargo is standing at the dock ready to be loaded, I'd double the speed. And assuming there's some kind of mechanical assistance, it could be much faster. |
| #4rab-ka-laJun 22, 2006 19:03:08 | Don't forget about magical assistance. I'm sure players will come up with all sorts of things to speed the cargo transfer. Tensers floating discs, unseen servants, unseen crew members, bigbys hands, teleport, Summon monster, and every other spell that could be twisted to their purpose. I do think the times might be a little too much. Unloading always seems to go faster. Have you ever moved with a U-haul? Loading it right takes longer. The restriction of two crew might not be perfect either, especially depending on the ship and cargo accessibility. All in all, a great starting point. Good work, like all your stuff. |
