The Evergreen Forest [Map Location: O8]

Settled at the edge of the Evergreen Forest along the Lowland Plains where the road itself disappears into the wide open plains. The End of the Line Inn is a large building of wood. Worn white pain is peeling in a few places around the Inn's exterior but it is the last building before entering the lowland plains. A sign hangs over the entrance door, a heavy, hearty wood stained dark and in heavy contrast to the surrounding exterior. A stable rests around the back and one must enter through an opening in the large fence. It appears there had once been a gate but it has long since been removed.

Inside the visitor is immediately greeted by a large room, it's walls smoothed logs stained the same color as the door one has just walked through. There are numerous tables filling the room on this floor, a hallway leading back further into the building with many doors on either side of it. At the right side of the room a large stairway leads upwards to the next level. The bar rests straight ahead of the visitor and hanging over it against the wall is a large axe. A dwarf stands behind the bar, his long beard graying in spots from it's vibrant red. Around the room there are always patrons to be found, travlers and adventurers seeking the treasures said to be hidden away in the Scorched Woods, remnants of the ancient evils that once lurked within.

Rumors have come to these lands that evil stirs once more, somewhere here in the east. That a darkness is coming and the peace of the world will be challenged once more. Many have come here seeking this evil, seeking to claim glory. They pray that one day their names shall be spoken with reverence as those belonging to the Heroes of old are. Some hope to prove themselves worthy enough to ascend to the throne, others hope to gain power enough to take it by force. For while there are many who have come to stomp out this evil... others have come to seek it out for more nefarious purposes. Others have come... to join it.

A cold wind blows as a tall figure enters the End of the Line Inn, the light of the dusk ducking in the door as he passes in. His skin is pale and white in shocking contrast to the black hair that hangs from his head in places while in others stabbing outward. A large black robe is wrapped tightly around his slender body with wisps of embroidered flames climbing from the ground. He walks with steady graceful steps and finds himself at the bar. He fixes his eyes on the dwarf and sits.

"Well met barman, have you any wine to slake my thirst?"

"Aye, I've got all sorts of drinks from those fruity elven wines to the strongest dwarven stout. Thats why this be the last stop, end of the line and all that. Ye be drinkin ta ferget friend? Ye look like ye be in mourning."
The dwarf plucks a piece of parchment from behind the bar and sets it down, listing a number of various wines from an exotic elven passionfruit wine to a gobbish swamp-berry wine.

The man chooses the gobbish swamp-berry wine with a wry smile, memories flickering behind his eyes. A frown crosses his face as if those memories were not his own. He looks up to the dwarf, or down, with one hand handing him the list back while the other waves and a little glob appears on the bar. Absent mindedly he begins to speak while the little glob takes on a bizarrely humanoid shape and starts to walk about, not straying to far from his hand.

"Forget? No... to remember? Maybe, but i have naught to remember as I am as I always have been. Things seem different and yet the same from my perspective... Worry yourself no more on my expense good man, you keep a free house with a pleasant and peaceful aura. No, I mourn no one, leave be myself."

Shaking his head his looks return to a more here and now attentiveness. The glob toddles about and catches his attention. With a flash of his eyes it is gone, his unruly hand brought back to dominion.

"If you will I have heard tell of troubles in this area. Some speak of a shadow on the horizon, I would know more of this. Perhaps, to help?"

The air fills with the sound of faint music, a mournful song that travels swiftly as if desperate to beat the coming night.

erdana">"The sun has gone and light has passed,
the warmth of day it turns to cold.
Naught the day has made will last,
when the dark of nights grown old.

Though this life we live to face,
for how long none might say.
Until the blessed night's embrace,
once more shall we face the day.

All shall last that we have made,
until I am with you once more.
Then, all that is shall fade,
and I shall come to silent shore."

As the words carry upon the wind a slender figure enters. A man wearing black from head to toe and the tattered remnants of a funeral shroud covering blackened armor. He is pale but not deathly so and shortly cut black hair tops his head.

Entering the inn, the man stops to take in his surroundings before choosing a table near the doorway where he rests a glaive inscribed with designs of skulls. From the weapon hang many tokens, any seeing it perhaps noting at least one token of lament from their people's beliefs.

The dwarf's bushy eyebrow raises as the strange man enters to the sound of sad music. He glances toward the... other strange man and shakes his head slowly. He makes his way to the side of the bar and leans in toward the barmaid there.
"What is it about dusk that brings out the nuts? An remind me not to be sayin mourning again... seems ta bring the crazies. Bah... now I'm sad... stupid song... crazy people... whats this world comin ta?"

The man at the table looks up slowly toward the dwarf, his hand stroking the glaive at his side gently.

erdana">"This world is coming to learn that peace cannot last. Unity is an illusion, the only thing certain is the inevitability of death. In the end all things fade."

The man's fingers run through the various tokens upon his glaive, a distant look coming over his face.

"Near... me axe."

The pale man listens and in the end stands, looking at the stranger in black.

"Perhaps, stranger, however there are still forces mortals have not yet come to know, surely there are things that are truly....endless... In the end hope will exist. The striving to live and grow, to be become something more. Have you any hope?"

Turning to the dwarf again his look has become resolute.
"I beg yet again master dwarf, to be told of this shadow that has shrouded the hearts of the people thus. People should not be so resigned to eternity, there should be a dream for all, to drive existence."

The man looks toward the pale one at the bar and the slight hints of a smirk spread across his lips.

erdana">"No things are beyond mortal knowledge, only beyond mortal acceptance. These are the things men do not wish to exist, and so deny it's existence. It is as a man denying the inevitability of death. Nothing is endless, all things fade in time. Take it ten years or five thousand.

Hope holds no power when a man has faded, one cannot hope when one is gone. Men strive to defy their inevitable end, it is those who accept it is coming that reach the greatest heights. It is this end that forces people to strive, to grow, and to live while they can. Leave the blind hope and faith that something greater will come to the clerics."

"Well friend, if I knew a lot about it, wouldn't be much of a shadow eh? Don't rightly know whats 'shrouded' this young man... but what ye were askin about earlier, thats different. People say somethins movin in them old ruins across the plains, scorched woods they call the place. Somethin evil is lurkin there. heavy thuding footsteps can be heard outside. the kind of footsteps that herald bounty hunters, mercenaries, or I suppose a someone wearing heavy boots with a serious dislike of floorbords. a hobgoblin (the apparent source of the footsteps) walks into the Inn. even for a hobgoblin, this one seems particularly covered in scars.

The pale man looks to the monster as it walks in and prepares to do battle, then is astonished as it is served. Keeping an eye on it he makes way for the door.

"If you are so resigned to your folly then I will leave you to it. I however will bring hope to the hearts of the people. I make way for these scorched woods, action may be needed and I am willing to do it. I invite those of you who are brave enough to come."

At the front of the Inn the door slowly swings open, a voice venturing in as it opens.

"'The bravesst are surely those who have the clearest vision of what is before them, glory and danger alike, and yet notwissstanding, go out to meet it.' Thucydidesss.”

The voice slithers its way in with a think snake like lisp prevailing.

"'Bravery iss believing in yoursself, and that thing nobody can teach you.' El Cordobesss”

With the door fully open now the voice's source can be easily seen. Filling the frame of the door stands a tall figure dressed in fine armor and clothing of dark violets with stylish slashes of yellow. Combining these with the figure's natural deep violet skin it makes it is hard to see where the garments stop and the skin begins. A long cloak decorated with stitchings of various weapons along the edges and a large image of a Great Axe dominating the back drapes over his shoulders. Looking at his face one is confronted by a foot long well groomed pale silver beard, discomforting yellow in yellow eyes lacking any white or pupil one of which is covered by a simple monocle, and an absurdly tall cylinder shaped dark violet hat with yellow trimmings of which two pointy ears jut out under it. As he enters his hoofed feet gently tap the wooden floor boards and a long hairy tail sweeps out lazily from under his cloak.

"Pardon me good ssir, but I jusst love a good quote or two."

The door swings open suddenly slamming against the wall. A female figure stands looming in the entryway shrouded in an unnatural darkness. The woman is dark skinned, clad in tarnished steel armor from the neck down, a three pronged spear-like weapon is tied to her backpack. Messy white hair hangs long past her chest only barely hiding her pointed ears. Red bangs cover her forehead and match her glowing red eyes. She lumbers forward slowly, stumbling occasionally.

"Yoooouuu.... jerk!"

The woman exclaims, stumbling obviously inebriated over to wards the hoofed gentleman.

"Wh-where's mah gold ya purple oaf!"

Closer inspection reveals the two to be identicle, with pale skin and a bare slits for noses. Solid blue eyes stare out, no pupils to be seen within.
"You speak of Scorched Woods." Says One.
"We will take you there if you wish." Says the other.
The two exchange glances once more then return their solid eyes toward those infront of them.

The twins charge into battle as one, crossing eachother's paths and swinging their large blades across one enemy's stomach. When they finish they stop on either side of the man. He groans in pain, staggering but managing to maintain his balance.

From behind them, two men rush out, their own blades, much shorter but just as deadly. They thrust into the backs of the two men, stabbing as their companion tries to fend them off. The blows are strong and deep, but the two stay their ground.

Further down the field of battle men fire from the darkness, their arrows streaking through the air and plunging downward. Both strike Nocturne as he sings, sinking through his armor and wrappings and meeting flesh with cold steel tips.

The first of the twins slashes through the enemy they had struck together moments earlier before his brother turns and hacks at his attacker. The one that had dispatched their common foe takes a step back, putting his back to his brother's. A sword cuts into another of the bandits, slicing a line across his leg.

The two bandits press the attack, despite the feeling of dread that has overcome them both. They swing and stab one is deflected with ease, the other sinks his short-blade deep into the left twin's ribs. He staggers but keeps balance, growling in an intense rage. The other two men fire but their arrows fall short of their targets, the grief brought on by the magics of Nocturne's song too great for them.

Just outside the light of the pitch covered arrows a creature appears. Its body writhing and springing forward towards the enemy as if though its existense is for nothing more than this moment. With a mental command a lump of dream-stuff appears before Onieros and then spreads over his body as he moves into battle.

Astral Construct appears at M-17 then moves to 0-10. Attacking once. Onieros activates his Skin of Ectoplasmic Armor and moves to I-16.

A deep rage seems to overcome the twins, their muscles bulging and roars echoing from their lips. They flex their arms and swing their large blades at their foes. Hacking and slashing at them with wild intensity. Their blades cut deeply into the bodies of their foes, seeming to give the twins greater drive to draw more from their bodies.

The bandits reel, staggering for a moment. One retreats a step, pulling a vial from his belt and downing it's contents. His wounds seem to seal themselves slightly and his blood loss ceases. The other's blade is thrust and sinks into his target's body drawing only a small amount of blood.

The twins turn as one toward their remaining target, one circles around as the other strafes to the side. Once in position they swing as one, slashing as one into the man. Their blades each travel through the man's body, passing eachother as they rip forth from the opposite ends. Their foe collapses to the ground, no chance to scream.

Nocturne's attack is dodged by the bandit. That same bandit leaps forward to the attack, stabbing and thrusting at the singing man. His blade sinks deep into his body, piercing into his body and into the ribs.

Elsewhere on the battlefield the other bandit thrusts and stabs at the ectoplasmic terror that assails him. The other man turns to assist his friend but finds that his feet are stuck. He struggles for a moment then chooses to fire at the opponent with his bow.

((You cannot pause a charge because you can't make it in one round. A charge is a full round action not a form of movement. Your attacks do not gain the +2 because of this... what you did when you 'started to charge' was a double move action. On top of this, if it WERE a charge, you would get only one attack (as part of the charge action) rather than the two you took. Since it was merely a 5ft step then full attack action, two rolls is correct however.

A side note, there is a benefit you are not taking into account. That being the +3 to attack and damage rolls with weapons that Nocturne has granted everyone with his Inspire Courage.))

Slome comes upon the wounded man and slashes him once, nearly losing his grip upon his axe from the blood that splatters him and his hands. The bandit collapses to the ground, his own blood soaking the earth around him.

((Oh wow... you are correct... Orcy forgot to post damage against you. He cannot recall exactly at this point quite honestly but he does know that it began with 3... so we're going to say 30 damage from the crit and that might save you a few points there....))

The twins turn toward their next foe, looking to eachother for only a moment before roaring out a challenge and charging. Their feet carry them swiftly across the plains to the bandit and their swords are swung hard. Carried on by the echoing tones of Nocturne's first song, their blades each sink into the foe. The combined effort of their attacks and the strikes that the astral construct had driven into the nearby bandit bring about their ultimate conclusion. The man gasps and staggers, his torso falling one way and legs the opposite.

The one remaining foe stares blankly at the carnage before him. He struggles to be free of the ectoplasmic goo that binds him to his place. Finding himself stuck fast, he raises his bow and fires. The arrow sails through the air, arcing upwards and coming down to thrust deeply into the earth at Onieros' feet.
