Welcome to the Academy, your place for role-playing tips, tricks, and advice. There’s not a person alive so good at what they do that they can’t improve or benefit from what others have to say, so don’t think that this thread is only for those who don’t know what they’re doing—it’s for all of us. As the quote at the top says, “Who dares to teach must never cease to learn.” Truer words are rarely spoken.

So come in and share an idea or method, ask for input on a character concept, inquire as to someone else’s style, or do anything related to bettering the role-playing experience of the forum as a whole. Alternatively, drop by to instruct others, answer questions, pose role-playing challenges, or give your sage advice. Better still, do both. After all, we all have things to share, and things to improve on. So let’s get it all out in the open, and see if we can forge a generation (or several) of better role-players.

I personally learned a lot by reading the posts of others, in fact I first became interested in getting an account after reading a few early matches in sorcen's. I think they were korone v gideon and the one with the dragon-mech.

also, I find listening to music that seems to fit the character or situation helps me in roleplaying.

Korone vs. Gideon and Gideon vs. Hestaby, I believe. Both very fun matches, if I do say so myself. Which brings up a good point...I'll do some searching myself, but if anyone has a battle or two that they feel really brings some quality role-playing to the reader, please let me know and give me a link to the page. I'll grab the fight and preserve it here, so that others can read them and see what's going on.

Interesting. That's something that I personally don't do...I may have to give it a try, since I have some characters that were inspired by songs...

As stated in an earlier thread, it is the goal to achieve a character that sometimes take actions that you did not expect or does not disagree with. A character with his or her own will within your minds.

A way to help achieve this the first few or many times, however fast you progress, is to make characters that base themselves upon some part of yourself when it comes to personality. Take a single trait within you or a tendency or something similar and use that as the basis of the character creation.

Along that line, Munchlord is one I can mention. He was based off of my ambition, but with the special modification that he was to be less compassionate about it, but only when his ambitions were threatened.

As you may know, he's the Dictator/Tyran of an entire multiverse, having usurped the gods and replaced them more or less (the details include his own religion and a lot more). This has in fact been a good change to most of the population, even if their freedom has been limited.

One good fight to look at for good RP-ing and a couple examples of good fighting is a fight between one of my characters and Jessica's. It's in one of the Sorcen battle arena's. If anybody wants to look at it, I can look it up and put the link in.

I personally liked the battle between Foxhengeyokai's Shiro and Gaelro_Nailo's Lafali in Gareth's.

It starts here and ends on the next page.

Ok, Here's the link to the battle. I think it is a good one anyway.

So, I was listening to an audio novel once. It was about snap decision-making and intuition; a psychology book. And a few hours in, the book starts talking about this improvisational comedy group called Mother. The author talks about their incredible off-the-cuff scenes. They looked like they rehearsed for hours, but really everything was made up on the spot. How do they do it?

Never saying no. They always roll off of what their co-actors (is that the right word here?) say. Here's an example of how this works; in one dialog, this rule is ignored. In the second, the actors use this concept.

A: Doctor! My leg hurts.
B: Ah. I'm afraid we'll have to amputate.
A: What? You can't do that, doctor.
B: Why not?
A: Well, I'm rather attached to my leg.
B: Oh.
[etc.]

Compare

A: Doctor! My leg hurts.
B: I'm afraid we'll have to amputate.
A: Oh, no. That'll be the second time this month.
B: You have a pain in your wooden leg?
[etc.]

Which is better? Now, granted, when you're roleplaying, an important thing is to try to stay in character. Sometimes your character would just...not do something. But you as a player can work to accept other player's ideas. I know this is something I need to work on, myself.

Unrelated, but I'm also looking for a new direction for my characters. I'm feeling like everything I'm making so far isn't...fresh. Whatcha all do when you feel you need to break your old patterns and create something totally new?
Do you ever feel the need to break your old patterns to start something totally new?

Listen to some music or watch a movie or read a book that is miles off from what you usually do with.
