non-WOTC 4e products?

May 21, 2009 17:24:24 Can someone post any links or info on any non-WOTC material that is being made for 4e. I know back in the 3.x days there were tons of places, but I haven't looked much now.

I know Goodman Games has some modules (Dungeon Crawl Classics for 4e) and they have some sort of Monster Manual type of book either out now or coming out soon for 4e, but are there any other companies making products that are worth looking into?

May 21, 2009 18:06:33 Sword & Sorcery Studio / Fiery Dragon is making some things for 4E. There's also a number of things that are "edition indepenant" - like printable dungeon terrain and the like by various producers, such as Worldwork Games.

There is a list of more folks listed in the GSL forum, and most have their products available on such places as drivethrurpg.com . It's certainly a much smaller list than for 3E.

The only two I've bought are Creature Collection and Dungeon Denizens both of which are monster collections which I'm very happy with.

Dungeon Denizens is in print too and can be bought from various places.

When my MM2 finally arrives I will write a review of the three producs.

Any third party stuff you're going to find is going to be pdf, for the most part. Printing physical books is a trap, any more. Too much initial outlay compared to online publishing.

Mongose Publishing prints physical books still. Their Quintessential series of books is being rewritten (or written anew!) for 4e. They already have The Quintessential Wizard and The Quintessential Fighter. They have also published a new setting for 4e that looks kind of interesting. www.mongoosepublishing.com

I highly recommend Scarrport: City of Secrets (Deviant Reality), the Book of Races (GameVein), and the Remarkable Races collection (Alluria Publishing). I would also recommend the Advanced Player's Guide (Expeditious Retreat Press), but the Player's Handbook 2 and the monk playtest supercedes almost all the material found therein.

And have you considered going to some of the smaller publishers (smaller then Goodman Games) and asking for free copies to review? I've definitely made choices on what to buy based on your reviews.
