I'm aware this post may not be located in the correct place, but while searching, I couldn't find a place I thought would be better. So I apologize in advance if I'm speaking out of place. Thanks for understanding if so.

I'm trying to find information regarding writing a book/novel. I'm wanting to see about self publishing it myself, but am curious where I can find information about what content is considered open source, say "elf" or what content is considered offlimits without lisencing/etc say maybe "Warforged."

And if info is offlimits, where would you go to get permission to use that content?

If anyone could point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate it, if not, thanks again for your time.
