1. An old man with a long white beard, who uses a Quarterstaff as his walking stick. He wears wizard robes and convinces everyone he meets that he is a wizard. However, he is actually... A Monk. No one expects getting smacked in the face really, really hard from that "wizard".

2. A Cleric who was raised by Rats. He goes on and on about how perfect his god is and insists that everyone should worship him. This great god is the God of Rats, Ratamos.

3. A raging Barbarian who is convinced every enemy he faces is his long sought-after nemesis. He shouts "You! You killed my mother, and stole my magic amulet!", "Fiend! I've been hunting you down for the past 18 years!", etc, every time he fights even the weakest minion.

Little Bunny FooFoo!  Ha ha!  That sounds like a creature I need in my quest.  He could be a wererabbit that grabs the heroes and crushes their heads in with a big mallet .  He'd start out all innocent and harmless looking like a cute little bunny until a hero gets too close, then transforms in to the crazed wererabbit who starts attacking without mercy.

I'm having my character tame a feral mastiff dog.  I'm thinking of having him go a little overboard with his bonding with the dog too.  Maybe he could sort of "snap" and get to where he will only talk to the dog and no one else.  The person who is trying to talk to him would then have to overhear what he tells the dog.  My hero gets the idea that the dog is magical and can somehow talk to people.  This would be total nonsense though since there would be nothing magical about the dog, except maybe a spiked collar that gives it a little more protection than such a collar normally would.

It could go something like this:

NPC: "Hail hero!  What news have you of your travels?"

My Hero: "What do you think boy? Can we trust this man with what we've found?"

Dog: Bobs his head up and down only because he's trying to get a bead on a fly so he can snap at it.

My Hero: "Oh you think so?  Alright my friend, tell him this....."

The NPC then has to listen to the Hero telling the dog what to say to find anything out.

Nuts huh?

Unfortunately, disguising a lethally dangerous enemy as a cute little bunny hasn't really worked since Monty Python did it. Every time any of my parties runs across a harmless-looking little bunny--or any kind of harmless-looking creature--they either give it a wide berth or torch it with napalm. (Admittedly, there was the incident of the artificer they polymorphed into a rabbit who kept his spellcasting abilities, but that was a one-time thing in 3.5. Still, a rabbit that shot lightning bolts IS kind of memorable.)

Wasn't it Expedition To The Barrier Peaks that had that plant monster that looked like a bunny rabbit sitting on a treestump until you got close enough for it's tentacles to grab you? Did EttBP come out before or after the Monty Python thing?
Because for a lot of us oldtimers, that monster was the root cause of our bone-deep mistrust of anything cute and cuddly...

24.  A female twf ranger (unaligned) based on Lizzie Borden, who fights with the hatchet she murdered her parents with - a magic (evil?) handaxe and family heirloom that's quite possibly the cause of her family's six-generation-long "curse" of murder, misfortune and tragedy. Has a few anger-management issues - her preferred method of problem resolution is to hit them repeatedly in the face with her axe. Wandered away from an orphanage as a teenager and was living wild in the woods until she hooked up with a group of rangers. Mostly tends to seem normal, if a bit quiet and standoffish, but definitely shows hints of a disturbingly predatory, slightly feral element to her personality.
For example, she's elevated the art of holding a grudge to a lifestyle - a talented artist, she keeps sketches and detailed descriptions of every bad guy who's ever escaped from the party, and plans to hunt them all down some day. She collects trophies from all her opponents - a short length of rope woven from bits of gnoll pelts, a flute made from a lizardfolk's blowgun, etc.
Known to have a soft spot for children, those who can't defend themselves, and small animals. Pretty much everyone else is fair game if they tick her off enough, though.

Insane human wizard who believes he is a polymorphed ancient red dragon.  He only uses fire spells, refers to other characters as kids no matter what their age, and is generally a bumbling idiot with brief periods of lucidity that make those closest to him wonder if his story is actually true.

26. A Rogue who is convinced, throughout the entire campaign, that every obstacle and enemy he faces was sent by the boss they killed in the very first adventure of the campaign, believing that he is still alive and pulling the strings on everything. Even if that first boss was a simple Level 2 Hobgoblin Fighter with 6 Intelligence. Or a Gelatinous Cube. He is obsessed with unraveling the conspiracies and finally putting an end to him.

This would be especially hilarious if your DM decides to go along with it, and the final boss of the campaign is indeed that level 2 Goblin Cleric you thought you killed; he has gained considerable power since your first encounter with him.

One of my favorite characters I ever played:

27) Deaf-mute Half-orc bard.  This was in 3e.  His Charisma was 6, so he could not cast spells.  However, his Intelligence was 16 and he spent every skill point he got on Read/Write Language in order to learn every written language he ever came across. 34. Wizard who carries the bones of his best buddy around for seven levels until he finally gets enough gold to resurrect him, only to have the resurrection spell totally fail. This causes him to develop an intense hatred of anything remotely resembling a cleric. Is convinced the resurrection worked but the cleric cheated him so is constantly seeing his dead buddy just about anywhere. One of the few ways to get him to go on an adventure is to convince him that his buddy is held captive by the target. Is completely insanely evil but still thinks he's lawful good. Lives on an island where he spends most of his non-adventuring time trying to locate his buddy with scrying spells. (This was a 2e character and is still my favorite character I've ever played.)

35. Two-Face the Palidin. Belives that his diety talks to him through his holy symbol, which he flips like a coin. Will not do much of any thing unless the coin answers him. Carries a necrotic sword and a healing sword.

36. Moltair, the wresting wizard. This was a fun one to play. Used a spiked chain gauntlet to punch or strangle the living daylights out of any monster he could. Everything was a weapon, and he used spells exactly for that purpose. To make weapons. Or make himself bigger.

37. An old, senile Human Paladin. Is actually a farmer, but believes himself to be a knight. Wears tattered rags and a rusty bucket on his head, but thinks they're armor of the finest quality. Travels around fighting "Giants" (really buildings). The first homely tavern wench he sees, he believes her to be a princess in disguise or a reincarnation of a goddess.

DM's decision if he's really senile, or the rusty bucket is really a Helm of True Seeing enchanted with an illusion.

(Based off of Don Quixote. I'm surprised no one's mentioned this one yet.)

38. A strange bard who constantly talks to his "friend", an invisible lute. He pretends that the lute talks to him back, but nobody can hear, see or feel it. However, using the invisible untouchable lute, his spells have increased strength and power, whether it is just his faith and belief making him stronger or his lute being real, nobody knows...

39) A female elvish Druid that has a fear of other humanoids, especially humans, and especially males.  She spends as much time in animal form as possible, and her only true companion is her wolf.  When adventuring with the rest of the party, she stays as close to the other female PCs as possible, and, if the part splits up, refuses to be in a group with a guy unless another girl is present.

40) A 15th level 3.5 character:  5th level Druid, 5th level Sorcerer, 5th Level Paladin.  She worships the god of nature, and her Druid animal companion is her sorcerer's familiar is her paladin's mount.  Not surprisingly, she is very attached to her pet.

Note: This character requires multiple lives without an apparent reason(so DM consent).

You make a character that falls out of the sky in front of the party and says that his soul was digested by something in the Far Realm(like the an upside-down mountain with 31 and 1/2 eyes and no mouth). Make sure no matter what kind of race/class combination you do things that should not be possible(say halfling charger who can break admantine). And every now and then spout something that does not even resemble sanity(does that look like a jrahk-hyulph-retyiu or maybe an oversized Seniblus thriving on a green plus twelve morpher stone). If you die make sure to happen across the party with simmilar clothes, the same name, but radically different race/class combination(like an undead necro warlock this time).

Characters might begin to fear the Far Realm, while the players will probalbly laugh.

The bear is his whole world and punishes anyone who dares to mess with the bear.  Any powers or feats he has trained in have to do with his bear and better protecting him or team work with the bear.  He had an overzelous father as a child and as a result has grown up thinking that dwarves are the reason the world is civilized.  Arrogant as hell when it comes to acknowledging that any race could do something original without inspiration or help from dwarves.

An absolutely stereotypical elderly Gandalfesque wizard. Goes everywhere with his walking stick and pointy hat, telling stories about what wizarding was like in his day. Despite his many years, he behaves strangely when it comes to life experiences that he would surely be knowledgeable about, e.g. drinking in taverns, riding horses.

What we don't tell the rest of the party to begin with is that this wizard is actually just a young apprentice who took off with his master's Hat of Disguise, and he just makes up these stories and pretends to be old and venerable because he absolutely hates being condescended to. He might even be a Sorcerer, not a wizard at all =P

62  tiny pally- a small sized paladin, permanent reduce person. through feats gain a tiny sized flying mount permanently enlarged. take levels in cavalier, charge with lance and hit the enemies weak point for massive damage. big damage in a tiny package.

63  peter "the piper" offlanigan - bard, judging by the nickname playes the panpipes or flute. actually sings and beats people to death with a lead pipe hence the name.

64  simon "moneybags" black - improvised weapons uses sacks filled with copper coins as improvised clubs and saps, great visual as a thrown weapon.

the last two were characters in a one shot. simon died due to bloodloss (stirges) peter left the adventure to persue a career elsewhere.

65 a schizofrenic character, played off and on as an npc by the two dms who rotate.

I would like to play both of these at some point.

love the pet lover, but a familier can't also be a paladin mount or a animal copanion... sorry

Wow, if you're going to tell someone they cant do something in DnD, you really need to learn more about the game.

Boy you sure would look like an ass if someone quoted "a druid/sorcerer can’t use her animal companion as a familiar." from the players handbook. Oh but I'm sure nobody will bother.

I apologize. I was unaware that the PHB was the all-saying source of everything that must be done at all times in the D&D universe.

So he takes a level in Arcane Heirophant - combines the two with a feature called Companion Familiar, which makes your animal companion your familiar.

But as a rule, you can basically ignore things like that if your DM agrees to, which most DM's who are even halfway decent would find a way to make work for something like this.  Good character concepts have a way of trumping minor rules.

67. A generally agreeable psychopath who adventures primarily for the joy of killing.  He's perfectly loyal to the party except when the odds are against him, but as he's a horrible judge of the odds and incredibly reckless anyway, it doesn't usually come up.

He does have a habit of killing every girl he sleeps with, however.

68. A chaos sorcerer who talks entirely in TV lingo, like the junk robots from the original (1980s, and yes I know this is really nerdy) Transformers movie. Critical hit? "Satisfaction guaranteed." Spend a healing surge? "Lifetime warrantee comes with free scratch and ding removal." Kill an enemy? "Our specially formulated cleaning solution removes even the toughest stains."

I once played a wizard/cleric/mystic theurge using the fairy race from mythic races. she had the mentality of an 8 year old girl was infinitely trusting and forgiving but with a wild temper and easy to insult.

my highlights where coming up with pointless questions just prior to people explaining important things. (one was about stucco, but they useually revovled around the persons likes and dislikes)

covering the stealth heavy characters weapons in multicolored continual flame. and cried when he asked me to remove them until he admitted that they where pretty.

I came up with wild ass items like a pouch that produces cookies magicly that heal you as if used a cure minor on yourself.

winning arguments with repeated no or yes (depending on my side) and inthe end getting frustrated and coating them in fairy fire.

and my favorit  tormenting a man because "he was a meany" for not treating me like his sister because his sister was a cleric of the same god I worshiped and so we called each other sister. sense she was my sister and he was her brother the clearly he was my brother as well. it literally to intervention by my deity to get me to  believe otherwise and quit making that mans life hell.

70. The ex-noble necromancer that outfits all of his skeletons and zombies in plate armor, to relive the glory days of when he had footsoldiers. He had one skeleton named Ty that seemed to always survive the various encounters.

73. I'm currently playing a human cleric with some multiclass wizard feats.  We've given her multiple personalities that push to the fore and act, sometimes witout her knowing.  To reflect this, the DM allows me to retrain out a whole set of Multiclass feats to another class between adventures (we decide what would fit the story best, not just swap out to meta-game the next adventure).  Her strongest personality is Wizard, but sha also has a fighter, a ranger, and several non-classed civilians.  Sometimes the DM will speak as one of them, and it is assumed to be out loud- the party sometimes has discussions with them like NPCs.

The party wizard was very upset when he dicovered the wizard personality refers to itself as Sammaster...

74. 2nd edition cleric whose only weapon available is an empty bottle.  He's constantly in fear that it will break, thus becoming an edged weapon and useless for him. (sadly, this really happened...)

75. One of the players in my campaign is a wizard who is convinced the drow are involved in everything that opposes the party, regardless of how ridiculous and tenuous the connection is.  He's basically a D&D conspiracy theorist.  I haven't decided if he's right or not yet . >:D

76. A Warforged Runepriest with multiple personalities and faces based on his/her rune state (think Mayor of Halloweentown).

Based on a NWN character I used to play in a persistant world:

Absolute snot of a young noble woman who was captured for ransom.  Got to the kidnappers so bad that when the ransom wasn't paid they tried to soul-trap her and permanently destroy her.  Failed and the result was a complete scrambling of her mind.

She is now very nice and sweet but doesn't exist in the real world.  Can't speak a word with more than 2 letters without jumbling them up, and any sentence of more than 2 words jumbled on top of that.  Yes, I actually spent several hours a night typing in sentences like:  me cna hpel yuo? (Can you help me?).  Wandered around in the world's "starter" clothing and was completely clueless as to why others thought she needed clothing, equipment, etc.  Was SO hard to keep in character but so fun to play, plus well-liked on the server as someone was always trying to "cure" her.

78. (3.5) An greedy, paranoid, borderline insane elven evoker/paladin who is part of a small kingdom's royal family and frequently argues with his intelligent sword about what constitutes "proper behavior" for a paladin.

He started as a greedy, paranoid, borderline insane evoker before the DM decided to start messing with him.  He really disliked the half elven princess that we had to rescue (the feeling was mutual) and often annoyed other characters with his frequent ranting.  The DM took advantage of a bit of character background that his parents were killed at a young age (he was raised by his uncle, also an evoker but completely sane) and wrote in that his mother had survived and later married a human king before eventually being killed fighting a demon.  That princess he was always arguing with turned out to be his half sister.  This was "discovered" when he found a magical sword in a crypt labeled with his family name; being a greedy SOB and easily fascinated by anything with a powerful magic aura, he immediately claimed that the sword was his by birthright and grabbed it.  The sword was an intelligent Holy Avenger with a few extra powers and after rolling a 19 I was informed that I failed the will save against the sword's ego by 2 (snarky DM) and had to take all future levels in paladin and change alignment from chaotic neutral to lawful good.  The sword actually was his birthright, left for him by his late mother; the sword explained it all to him.

Despite having four levels of wizard before becoming a paladin and refusing to wear armor that would hamper his spellcasting he actually managed to become a competent combatant, partially through use of spells like Cat's Grace and Mirror Image plus a bunch of magical gear.  The +5 sword capable of healing it's wielder didn't hurt, either.  The DM groaned loudly when I informed her that by making my character become a paladin she had created a religious zealot; one entire session was a side quest that was an elaborate scheme to trick him into actually behaving like a "proper" paladin instead of doing things like asking everybody he met to make monetary donations to his crusade against evil.

I actually wrote him in as an NPC at a higher level in a campaign I DMed a few years later, he had the title of Duke and was acting as an advisor and hero on loan for a friendly kingdom that the PCs were working for.  Mainly he was there because his sister (who was now Queen) wanted him out of the castle for a while.  That game fell through after only two sessions so I didn't get to have him do much other than make an appearance and get  frightened expressions from the two players who had been in the other group.
