| #1adeianosJul 15, 2008 11:25:48 | Basically, as everyone has a pet peeve about at least one class, this can get some advice out there to avoid being the Detect Evil Paladin, the "Steal from the party" Rogue, etc. Start by stating class, then the tip. 1. [Paladin] Save Detect Evil for the dungeon. Using it for social encounters generally devolves into "He's evil! Death!". 2. [Rogue] You are not a common street trash thief. Have some pride, use your skills to help the party, not just yourself, you'll make more money working WITH the party to get the MacGuffin with the wonderful reward than if you spend 6 hours of gametime picking people's pockets on the street. 3. [Ranger] No drow. No scimitars. No panther animal companion. Just no. 4. [Bard] Yes, you are the Jack of All Trades. No, that doesn't mean you carry 6 different kinds of weapons. Use your class abilities. 5. [Good Cleric] Don't proselytize (applies to Paladins as well). If the party members don't follow your God already, they won't. Be somewhat tolerant. 6. [Evil Cleric] Don't use your healing powers as a Sword of Damocles over the party's head. Just because you can heal them doesn't make you in charge. 7. [Wizard] Your name is not Tim. Nobody calls you Tim. Fireballs for no reason make a crispy friend cleric, knock it off. Your focus until level 10 should be buffing and crowd control. Save damage until you get good single target spells and AOE spells that don't affect allies. 8. [Monk] Monks are humble. Don't try to be a showoff, all you'll do is roll a 1. 9. [Barbarian] Yes, we know, Krusk smash. Being a barbarian doesn't mean your character has to be an idiot. He doesn't have roid rage either. Being a barbarian is his style of combat, not his world and mindset. He may not be the kind to sit and watch opera, but that doesn't make him an imbecile. 10. [Fighter] If you aren't fighting something airborne or that's running away, if you have a ranged weapon out, you fail. Your job is to be up front, getting pounded on, and putting out enough damage to make sure the enemy keeps going for you. 11. [Sorcerer] Don't make fun of the Wizard just because he has to prepare spells and bend them to fit the situations that present themselves. Remember, any competition between spellcasters of near equal level will usually end better for the person who can cast more spells. 12. [Druid] Don't sit behind the lines and spam Call Lightning. Remember the crispy fried cleric the Wizard made? You just made crispy fried Fighter to go with it. 13. [Paladin again] A Paladin's Code applies to the behavior of the Paladin. The behavior of the Paladin's comrades determine whether the Paladin stays with the group or not. Your friends don't have to be like you, they don't have to follow your code. If you object to their actions, don't filibuster the game or threaten, offer them a reason to act within your code. Suggest ways to avoid needless killing, such as rather than killing a prisoner, tie him to a tree with a note explaining why he's there. |
| #2PolisJul 15, 2008 12:45:30 | You posted in the wrong forums, all the sections up top are for 4e now. The previous edition forums are for 3.x and lower. |
| #3adeianosJul 15, 2008 14:48:52 | Crap, guess that's what I get for using tabs in mozilla. Can a Mod trim and move? |
| #4deviknyteJul 15, 2008 18:15:07 | Don't worry about it. They don't have a Player Advice or DM Advice in the 3.5 section. Lots of people are posting stuff in here since these two boards don't really involve mechanics more as in role-playing and game running/management. And those classes will be out eventually. 14. Your class is just a place where your getting your powers. You don't have to play the fluff they've written. You don't have to take all the levels of a prestige class or a class (3.5). You don't have to run with the fluff of your race or class or power at all! Building Jaron the Bold is usually cooler than Jaron the figher! And Lan the "pretend arcane archer" who's really just a ranger is cooler than the wasted feats (4.0). 15. (3.5) Most other classes make better archers than non-swift hunter rangers. 16. (4.0) Don't use weapons that don't you can't use your powers with. Focus and/or specialize on something or get the party killed. If your concept isn't possible right now deal with it and change your converted character until a class(es) come out that you can use. |
| #5lincoln_hillsJul 17, 2008 17:02:41 | 17. It's nice to have an audience, but remember to share the stage. If you expect people to be impressed with the cool things your character did, remember to show appreciation when somebody else does something else astounding. (Within reason. Laughing or clapping is OK: throwing undergarments or proposing marriage is not.) 18. When you fail, grin and bear it. Better yet, have a one-liner handy. 19. Turn off the blasted cell-phone or I'll drop it in a bucket of paint. 20. Cologne is not a substitute for bathing. In fact, nothing is. 21. Playing a character who's only interested in survival, to the point of paranoia and cowardice, is almost as intolerable as playing a character whose only goal in life is to die in as outrageous a fashion as possible. (But if death seems inevitable, see #18.) |
| #6james_gaines_dupJul 17, 2008 18:19:05 | 22. If you are not having fun, don't take it out on the players or the DM 23. [Rogue] Save thievery for good situations. Breaking into a prison cell using a stolen key is good. Picking the pocket of the archduke for no real reason is bad. |
| #7pigknightJul 17, 2008 20:41:50 | 23. [All Warrior Types, 3.5] Carry at least 5 different weapons that are made of different material and do different types of damage. 24. [All 4e] Carry one weapon. |
| #8galeighJul 17, 2008 21:34:58 | 24. [All 4e] Carry one weapon. 25. [4e rogues] have 1 ranged weapon, and 1 melee weapon |
| #9pigknightJul 17, 2008 23:06:09 | 26: [4e] Keep everything you find except weapons you can't use. 27: There is no Head of Vecna. |
| #10adeianosJul 18, 2008 16:24:25 | 28. [Wizards 3.5] "He's a Rogue, he'll make the save" is not an excuse for AOE. "He's a half dragon, he's immune to " IS an excuse for AOE. |
| #11meiertJul 18, 2008 16:36:37 | 29. Being a cleric is an excuse to AoE ![]() oh and I gues we all had our party rogue try and steal everything that wasn't botled down or on fire. |
| #12ogre4hireJul 20, 2008 2:22:49 | oh and I gues we all had our party rogue try and steal everything that wasn't botled down or on fire. If the rest of the party isn't going to bother trying to help look for treasure, it's only fair when the rogue fails to report 70% of what he actually finds. Yes, I did that one time. Yes, the party deserved it. Hey, if you've been shoehorned into playing a Gnome Rogue in the first place, then they just let you look for loot on your own, knowing that you've got at least one Bag of Holding... Hell, the sad thing is that I started doing it pretty much out of the gate at first level, and they still hadn't caught on by 5th level... |
| #13deviknyteJul 21, 2008 7:49:12 | oh and I gues we all had our party rogue try and steal everything that wasn't botled down or on fire. Fire stopped your rogue? |
| #14eldritch_lordJul 21, 2008 8:00:06 | Fire stopped your rogue? I'm not surprised; you could take the heat, but nothing says "I'm going to notice if you take this" than a big, hot, glowing object. |
| #15deviknyteJul 21, 2008 10:48:46 | Bluff. "I've always had this flaming (blank), seriously." |
| #16eldritch_lordJul 21, 2008 10:53:30 | Bluff. No no no. You never take the huge flaming whateveritis. You use it to cover taking other stuff. "Lidda! Put it back." "Put what back?" "The flaming bottle." "I didn't take it!" "Yeah, right. Like I wouldn't notice you slipping off with a huge, hot, glowing flask." "Aw, man, you got me. Fine, here you go." "Thank you. See, you'll have to get up a lot earlier in the morning to--...where's my bag of holding?" |
