| #1moakyJun 01, 2008 22:20:34 | Ok...dont know how to label myself. My kids call me a comic geek from my history with them(worked in a comic store as a teen...although quit following yrs ago). Besides my luv of comic characters though...I was introduced to DnD back around 84. We played a couple of times...a kid we know DMed. Bam nerd luv at its finest. Within a couple days of those few fatefull first days...that kid got in trouble(unrelated to us)...and moved away to his Dads. I bought up all the books I could...but no one else seemed interested in wanting to keep playing. Entering High School the stygma associated with the game etc...and I had come down with Crohns Disease, and got into heavy drugs for a bit. HS turned out to be a bad time for me. Well the years went by...got thru college/married etc. Several yrs back I got into playing computer RPGs. Have the full shot of the Bioware run...along with the new NWN2. I started in MMOs on Everquest in 01...played quite a bit...but no longer do. My health got worse over yrs...am now on disability. I seriously doubt I could pick up with strangers in RL to play(friends never into this stuff as indicated)...and saw that thing about the online play with strangers. Only thing being like tonight...I keep having to make bathroom runs. Even with the online style, I would be hard pressed to ever be able to pick RP up wouldnt I? I mean RP is totally different than hitting options in a game...or the fact I always tried to be a good person in EQ(no kill stealing/training folks/etc). MMOs use tactics...but totally different ball game from RP...not to mention my health issues(gut flares up a bit...and on vicodins daily from steroid/bone issues). So like I said...how would I get into this online stuff if I really wanted to? Even though I technically have 24/7 to do as I wish(barring wife/kid faction)...my health always seems to kick in...or I am hurting and vicoed up. Would random grps work...IE play when I can. I thought the whole point though was to make friends with a regular set of folks to carry on with. The equivalant to like a guild in MMOs. Anyways little vicoed cause my gut so jacked this evening...sorry for being longwinded. I saw 4th edition was due out when I was looking for more RPGs on Amazon, and it re-lit that fire of "I wanna finally find some folks to play PnP with". Must be a mid life crisis...hit 40 in Sep heh. Regardless I am going to pre-order the set on Tues....like half off on Amazon if order ahead of time. I spent many good hrs looking thru those 2e books with the imagination of it all running wild. With the added lore I have picked up thru Balders gate/NWN etc it will be pretty neat to continue learning about FR regardless. If you read this far, I thank you for your time and any input you may have ![]() |
| #2ShiftkittyJun 01, 2008 23:40:27 | I'm 40 and I don't see my midlife anywhere. Do you have it? LOL! If so, KEEP IT! I did security work for a few years and learned how to trust myself not to peek at the DM parts until needed. It was like having a controlled split personality. I've played so much of this game on my own! I also used to play PBE games, "Play By E-mail". These do take time, though. Too bad about your time being interrupted by bathroom breaks. That can be an issue unless you find an understanding group. Maybe someone on here may have links for you to find a group that doesn't mind interruptions of the critical kind. I hope you find one. |
| #3UndrhilJun 01, 2008 23:54:44 | I dunno ... some of the groups I've played with had enough pause times on each players turn that by the time my turn got back around, I could have gone to the bathroom then put some macaroni and cheese in the microwave then eaten said macaroni and cheese and it would *still* not by my turn again. Unless you are looking at being the DM of your game, I don't see this as being a detriment to you wanting to play D&D. Granted, there no 'pause' button but I don't think a group would mind waiting a few minutes for Ragdar to do his business in the bushes. Alternatively, he might be doing his business on the corpses of the enemies you have just defeated. Just make sure that's not where your party will be camping tonight. ![]() Seriously, good luck in looking for a group. D&DI being online and all is so new that I can't imagine there being many groups who will be highly focused roleplaying groups at first. They will mainly be exploring the interface and surfing for porn, I bet. ![]() |
| #4moakyJun 02, 2008 2:44:07 | Thanks for replys. Yeah they are usually fast...but can be so damn many of em some nights. We wont even get into if I have had a few vicos like tonight. Anyways I have been excited about the 4e since I saw it...unsure when these rules will make it to cRPG. I believe NWN2 is using 3.5e Really enjoyed the OC in that and the expansion MoTB...although it still doesnt quite top BG2. Pretty close though. Take care and sure I will have questions in future as I just found this brd. ![]() |
| #5PhobosJun 02, 2008 6:45:41 | Moaky, My personal advice, over time find some people you get to virtually know and understand you. I am sure you will get your share of the "jerks" that won't understand, but thats not predictive of everyone. Once you do, hopefully you can all set up a gaming night(s), and it may help plan. |
| #6syldrakJun 02, 2008 12:13:16 | Only thing being like tonight...I keep having to make bathroom runs. What you need sir, is a nice laptop with wireless. Get a second power adapter for the bathroom, and go to town. I am assuming you would be playing via the net with a group of people of course (Hopefully with the new D&DI stuff coming out), and if the urge for the bathroom comes? unplug power, hit the bathroom, plug in, no loss to anyone... they don't need to know you are on the toilet! |
| #7jageJun 02, 2008 19:50:00 | Boy I hope all the line breaks bewteen thoughts aren't bathroom runs. :D I have celiacs so I can relate somewhat, although I can control it through diet. You might consider starting a crohn's group for online D&D play and let other potential players come to you. Mention it in support groups or crohn's boards and see what you can scare up. I live in fear of facing a game night when I've been dosed, so I won't suggest finding a live game. Good luck! |
| #8blue_myriadsJun 02, 2008 20:21:58 | If you want to do something other than PbEM (Play by Email), there is also PbP (Play by Post)- also known as forum-based DnD. It's slow and combat is rather lethargic, but this also tends to mean it focuses on RP more than combat. The game quality depends on the GM and games rarely finish because RL takes away people who get busy. Nevertheless, despite this difficulties, it can be a lot of fun. (Are we allowed to link to sites? Here's one that some people frequent) http://www.rpol.net/ Also, you might want to consider Mushs (Multi-User Shared Hallucinations), which are like MMORGs but text-based and focus more on character interaction than killing things. They vary GREATLY by server. A place to study them would be: http://www.mudconnect.com/ Just be careful to search for the type of game you like. There's a lot of Hack and Slash out there involving boring, repetitive typing. There's a few gems hidden among these. Finally, best of luck on your health improving! ~Blue Myriads |
| #9moakyJun 03, 2008 23:48:54 | Thanks again for all the information... I put in a massive order to amazon tonight. Got the 4e set pre-order...but then went a little nuts since I noticed a bump up on my CC. Those things always seem to get folks in trouble...intend to tell the wife "It was the drugs that made me do it" :P. I ordered a copy of the 3rd edition deities and demigods. Then I got to reading about the 1st edition having some gods that were taken out due to copyright. Does anyone know if they were put back in for 3rd edition...th description I read on ebay wasnt clear to me. Yeah I figure even if I never get into pnp playing, I am gonna collect this stuff as a supplement to my cRPG with NWN and the various bioware titles. Even ordered a few of the Marvel Universe stuff. Friggen nerd side of me was screaming "You need that and that and....". $200 later and I am gonna be hearing it when the wife finds out...not to mention the ebay bids I am waiting on. Good stuff...again I say thanks to those that bothered to read/respond ![]() |
| #10moakyJun 03, 2008 23:55:01 | Shiftkitty I started to make another post...then looked up to remember your reply was in this thread. How do you go about single playing an adventure? It would play like a dice game...but it would still be different than always being on the PC to play games. Be able to use the imagination some. Could you give me an outline of your house rules? Is there others that do this as well? Maybe I should make another post asking those in forums about it? *EDIT* And as far as keeping "honest" about it...if I were to take enough vicodins I would probably forget everything I read ahead of time...even my own name. Course it always might put me into drooling mode...but as long as I keep it off the source material I should be GTG :P |
