| #1sezariousJul 16, 2008 8:37:56 | My character started off with the standard 9000 gp, however i was having fun that day and randomly offered the DM 5000 to have a go at pulling a card out of the deck of many things. He accepted. If it was negative, i would have to deal with it. If my character died, i would have to roll up a new one without any starting gold. Fair enough. The first time i recieve a bonus 2 to any ability score (not bad, but i could've done better). I didn't have enough for another go, so after succeding on a diplomacy check, I bartered to have another go at it with my remaining gold if i won a game of Three Dragon ante (which i had never played before, but had some beginners luck with). I pulled another card from the deck of many things. 1d4 wishes...:D . My question is, what can a level 5 warlock do with 2 wishes? I'm not a gambler in real life, but was playing as my Warlock character. I like to think that if a warlock chooses the side of "good", then he is someone with gambling, smoking or drinking experience. |
| #2ethilristJul 16, 2008 13:38:41 | According to the DMG page 143, your characters should be starting with about 3,600 gp worth of magic items and about 840 gold, so I'm not sure where your GM is getting the figure of 9,000 gp for. Also, I'm not finding any reference to a Deck of Many Things or Wishes in the Player's Handbook. So, it looks like this campaign is pretty far from the RAW. More seriously, I've always played wishes as being things your character wanted, rather than life-altering contracts which destroyed the PCs and the lives of everyone around them. I make this distinction because the latter option seems to be how all the other GMs I've played with have used them. So, I would recommend asking yourself, "What would my character like to have that wouldn't destroy anything?" and keep it simple. A magic sword. A small inn on the outskirts of town. A treasure map. +2 to another stat than the first one you raised. |

Based on the starting gold you referenced, you're after advice for a 3.5 character. Please ask again in the Classes & Class Features forum under the Previous Editions heading. |
| #4joshevaJul 18, 2008 15:42:37 | I wish to acquire a wise-cracking imp as my familiar. I wish to be able to use the Cheat spell as a spell-like ability at will. There, now you can distract your gambling buddies with your pet while you totally win the game! (The cheat spell is found in the book of vile darkness and the spell compendium.) |

| #7kurskJul 19, 2008 15:02:18 | 4.0 neither has warlocks, wishes, nor decks of many things. Correct. In 0.4 DMs are not allowed to add ANYTHING to the game. Otherwise, the WoTC police will bust down your door and confiscate your materials... ![]() |
| #8EricaGJul 20, 2008 2:48:26 | 1. This forum is not supposed to discriminate based on edition. The OP can x-post this in the previous editions forum, but it's fine here. 2. Definately keep your wishes simple. Not simple as in "I wish everything that happened, happened differently." (A wish by my husband that reset our entire game back to lvl 1 -_- ) Simple as in by the book: stat increases, create magic items, gain knowledge. Maybe increase your WIS specifically so you can sense motive or spot better when you're getting cheated, or CHA to improve bluff and diplomacy; or maybe some spiffy piece of gear ( i recomend something that could help the entire party). Please let us know what happens. |
| #9tytalusJul 21, 2008 3:39:42 | Correct. In 0.4 DMs are not allowed to add ANYTHING to the game. Otherwise, the WoTC police will bust down your door and confiscate your materials... The point is that this is without a doubt a 3.5 question, with 3.5 mechanics. Even if you add all these things to your "0.4" game, they will work drastically differently compared to 3.5. For example, stat bonuses were commonplace in 3.5 and a standard option for wish. In 4.0 there are no more stat bonuses, so any advice to use the wishes for stat bonuses is either meaningless or - if you also allow stat bonuses in 4.0 - too good to be easily balanced. My post was not about whether a 3.5 question belongs here. I was merely addressing natural_1's (false) assertion that this question can be seen independently of game mechanics. On topic: I'd also suggest the inherent +2 bonus, or alternatively 2 nice magic items. See here (slightly outdated, but warlock-specific) or here (the big list). |
| #10joshevaJul 21, 2008 10:36:25 | 4.0 neither has warlocks... I honestly have no reason to finish reading this post... |
| #11vortex2099Jul 21, 2008 13:13:37 | I honestly have no reason to finish reading this post... ![]() ![]() ![]() but on a more related topic, A 5th level character should not be allowed to pull from the DoMT. There are cards that give 10k xp or really expensive magic items. These things really unbalance a game, esp when you end up like 5 levels above the rest of the party... As for what to wish for now you have them, it really depends on the dm. I would probably get 2 nice magic items tho. |
| #12wyld_mutationJul 21, 2008 16:02:45 | Polymorph spell like ability at will Or permanent Shapechange effect. I would totally give you either one (but you have to use both wishes to get em) Because I love Shapechangers. Alot. As in I never play anything besides a Sorceror Shapechanger Changeling. When I'm playing anyway. |
| #13ethilristJul 24, 2008 12:54:20 | Another thing to wish for would be a GM who doesn't give a level 5 character two wishes. |
| #14rhianni32Jul 24, 2008 18:34:12 | Another thing to wish for would be a GM who doesn't give a level 5 character two wishes. lol this is what I was thinking too. |
| #15doomsoughtJul 24, 2008 19:02:24 | Earth elemental creature template. (or air elemental) Paragon creature template. applied to you. |
| #16gondorJul 25, 2008 1:48:46 | Oy. In your position I'd see if I could Wish my DM a +2 bonus to Wisdom. This sort of casual treatment of powerful artifacts does not bode well for a serious campaign. If you are determined to play with these wishes, I'd recommend wishing for magic items. The GP limit on Wish is very high for a 5th level character, and something tells me this campaign won't be going on long enough for the other options to become more useful than the items. |
| #17rainkissJul 25, 2008 7:54:27 | Another thing to wish for would be a GM who doesn't give a level 5 character two wishes. I'd rejected posting this as too snarky, but, yeah, that was my first thought, too. |
| #18furryhowlerJul 28, 2008 6:41:34 | "2 wishes for a level 5 character. What should i get?" A new DM..... |
| #19renizarJul 28, 2008 15:02:41 | 4.0 neither has warlocks, wishes, nor decks of many things. Wishes and Decks, yes you are right, but Warlocks, you sure you've read the book? I mean it's in there if you look in the classes, they have Infernal, Fey, ans Star pacts. |
| #20oninshadeJul 29, 2008 0:32:39 | I havent played 3rd in a while, but wasnt there a rule that stated you couldnt level up more than once from any 1 source of exp? may have been a house rule. and, if your level 5, and have 2 wishes, its kinda simple. 1 more pull at the deck of many things, then wish for the card to have a positive effect. |

Its a long standing rule that the DoMT is more powerful than a Wish (which is why a wish cannot undo a Donjon for example, or bring back someone slain by a minor death). |
