Hello all,

I've been playing this game for quite some time now, and I've come up with this new character that I really like (more on that later). However, since all my previous characters were either persons only casting heal spells in combat, persons not having any magic options, or persons casting only utility spells out of combat, I am really at a loss how to effectively play my new character in combat. The racial and class abilities that could be used in combat are just too overwhelming. So thereore I ask your help to explain how to play this character most effectively in combat/tactical situations, so I can best contribute to my team. (So I don't need any advice on how to build the character: I am happy the way he is built, as it quite accurately displays the way I envision him.)

The team (this is an evil campaign by the way):
  • suspicous psion that hates orcs [N(?) male tiefling/human* egoist 8] (trigger-happy 'powerplayer')
  • lazy nobility brat that hates males [female human bard 8] (silent type, though she roleplayes really well)
  • over-ambitious sorceress that uses a lot lightning spells, always accompanied by her smart-ass raven familiar [NE(?) female human sorcerer 8] (silent type, as in, the familiar (played by the DM) probably says more during a typical session)
  • vagabond assassin, who deep down is just a boy that's very afraid of death [CN(?) male human thug 5 streetfighter 3] (the 'loonie' type of player; favourite line for his character is 'I sleight-of-hand my daggers')

My character is a fallen solar, who has lost much of his original powers, and now is a battle-cleric for this racist, humanity-above-all, god.

Mechanically this is represented by my character being a human half-celestial with the Good and Extraplanar subtypes (so while being made out of the essence of Good, he has still an evil personality).

So, that makes my character like the following:
  • Str 16 (18 with gauntlets of ogre power), Dex 12, Con 20, Int 14, Wis 18, Cha 12
  • concentration +12, craft (fletching) +5, heal +5, knowledge (arcana) +3, knowledge (history) +9, knowledge (the planes) +6, knowledge (religion) +7, spellcraft +9, survival (cc) +5
  • weapon focus (greatsword); weapon focus (longbow); combat expertise; improved disarm
  • 20 ft speed, 40 ft fly (30/60 without armor)
  • 52 hp (yes, I got real lucky: all 8s on my hp rolls); AC 21 (due to +1 full plate), touch 11, flat-footed 20; damage reduction 5/magic; spell resistance 14; fort +9, ref +2, will +8
  • Attack: +1 bane (evil outsider) greatsword, +9 to hit, 2d6+7 damage, +17 to disarm (and +27 to prevent it); +1 composite longbow (+4 Str bonus), +7 to hit, 1d8+5 damage, 110 ft range increments
  • Spells: 4 orisons (dc 14), 4+1 1st lvl (dc 15), 3+1 2nd lvl (dc 16), domain is War.
  • Important items: lesser bracers of archery, gauntlets of ogre power, quiver of Ehlonna
  • Important racial abilities: daylight (Su) at will; smite evil (+4 damage) 1/day; darkvision 60 ft; immunity to disease; resistance to acid 10, cold 10, electricity 10; protection from evil (Sp) 3/day; bless (Sp) 1/day; aid (Sp) 1/day; detect evil (Sp) 1/day; weapons are good aligned (due to Good subtype); no need to eat, sleep, breathe, drink (due to Extraplanar subtype)

The campaign will go from ECL 8 up to and including ECL 11. So how do I play this character effectively during combat in this team? And how on solo missions? What spells to pray for? How to use his racial abilities in the most effective way? Any other tip how to play this character effectively in combat?

Many thanks in advance.

*His backstory involves him being polymorph-any-object-ed into a tiefling, resulting (if I remember correctly) in a +2 Dex, +2 Int, +2 bluff and +2 hide.

Well first off, you fly so I would use it for all it's worth. You can soar over the lesser minons(and the other players) and head directly for the big guns. are the melee PC despite being a cleric. I would have taken feats like flyby attack (if you qualify) so I could swoop and strike foes. You also can use your not-having-to-breath trait for situations against inhaled poison or underwater. Nothing like grabbing ana enemy and splashing into the lake pulling them down to drown. :D

It also depends on who you fight. If you fight a bunch of neutral or good foes your stuff against evil would be next to worthless.

With SR and resistance you will able to take some magic against you from low level enemies but against a strong caster; not so much.

With such an eclectic bunch I rather concentrate with just roleplaying.

And why or why every "power gamer" is a psion that has been polymorphed. They should only be allowed to play Human Fighters.;)
