so in my adventures as a psion i have accomplished alt .. well if you ask me... but i have a question about life or death.

would an autohypnosis check to resist death be affective against an assassins death attack?

my dm is terrible and all in my opinion but im tryin to work with him. hes new to it. so im not goin to complain much. but he says you instantly die with no chance of being able to use the check (dc 20, expanded psionics)  but the skill says its instantaneous and i could make the check.

if im reading it wrong please tell me and if so tell what it means.
thanks

From the SRD:

Resist Dying

You can attempt to subconsciously prevent yourself from dying. If you have negative hit points and are losing hit points (at 1 per round, 1 per hour), you can substitute a DC 20 Autohypnosis check for your d% roll to see if you become stable. If the check is successful, you stop losing hit points (you do not gain any hit points, however, as a result of the check). You can substitute this check for the d% roll in later rounds if you are initially unsuccessful.

I would say the bolded part indicates that you cannot use Autohypnosis to prevent death from the Assassin's Death Attack as you do not meet both requirements: negative HP and losing HP. You are simply placed at -10 hp and dead as a result of the Death Attack.

First and foremost, your DM doesn't have to agree with whatever rules we give you. You can say "Some guys on the internet said it works like I said" all you want, but he doesn't have to care or agree with you. The counter to that is that you don't have to play.

The best way to approach this one is to take him aside and say something like "Hey I know you are new to the rules, and psionics is one of the last things new DM's learn. Here are the rules, and this is how I am getting my interpretation that says I get to make my check."

Death Attack

Show
If an assassin studies his victim for 3 rounds and then makes a sneak attack with a melee weapon that successfully deals damage, the sneak attack has the additional effect of possibly either paralyzing or killing the target (assassin’s choice). While studying the victim, the assassin can undertake other actions so long as his attention stays focused on the target and the target does not detect the assassin or recognize the assassin as an enemy. If the victim of such an attack fails a Fortitude save (DC 10 + the assassin’s class level + the assassin’s Int modifier) against the kill effect, she dies. If the saving throw fails against the paralysis effect, the victim is rendered helpless and unable to act for 1d6 rounds plus 1 round per level of the assassin. If the victim’s saving throw succeeds, the attack is just a normal sneak attack. Once the assassin has completed the 3 rounds of study, he must make the death attack within the next 3 rounds.

If a death attack is attempted and fails (the victim makes her save) or if the assassin does not launch the attack within 3 rounds of completing the study, 3 new rounds of study are required before he can attempt another death attack.

If he's a new DM, Psion might not be the best class to use...

hes not new new. hes ran sessions here and there but never a campaign. i asked when he asked me if i want to play if i could and he was cool with it. i sat down and explained to him the basic of how they work and what they can do.  he was cool with it. hell i was the only one who played anything close to a base class. im the only base race in the group. so i didnt think there would be a huge problem with a psion. but now id much rather be some thing else
