3.5 with a homebrew "4E class"

I'm going to a con this weekend, where there is going to be a level 80 epic 3.5 game. I intend to ask the DM how he feels about homebrew, (it's level 80! he's got to be flexible!) and try and put a 4E fighter PMC Ranger Martial Archetype in his game.

As a level 80 game, I intend to use a level 30 character, but with "level appropriate" +16/15 magic items, and a "half level bonus" of 38. (I count 4E as LA+3)

The obvious changes would be that I would need to roll my defenses as saves, and explain to the DM about healing surges... Is there anything else that's going to catch me offguard?

If it's a 3.5e game at level 80, play a full spellcaster. Anything else will be immensely overpowered by the spellcasters in the group, and the spellcasters will have the most to do in the game. A bonus of +38 is not impressive in the least for level 80 in 3.5e.

Be prepared for a completely different game. 4e and 3.5e are practically incomparable.

With stat mods, I think I'm looking at +70 or so to hit.

That still might not be enough when the enemy can Epic Spell insta-gib you from a million miles away.

Alright, so change my ED to Undying Warrior. Better?

Does that save you from dieing instantly?

Isn't it the one that auto-rezzes you when you die?

Once a day. The second rez a day takes an hour.

Pretty sure they'd just steal your soul and destroy that, it's easier.

Sure, but doesn't that grant a Will save? Wis is a primary stat for Fighters, now.

Any chance that fighter can make A DC in the high triple or quadruple digits? At level 80, chances are that's what you'll be facing.

No, but at that point, noone else could have anyway. Just let one of my teammates wish me back or something.

The most effective character you could make would probably be something along the lines of 20-25 Cleric/ 20-25 Mage/ 20-25 Druid /5-20 Prc levels.

Just out of curiosity, why exactly would you say that? Or perhaps worded a little differently what fault of 3.5 do you feel this thread highlights?

(not intended as a flame, or sarcasm, but rather an honest question)

Perhaps that, since 3.x is already such a mismash of systems, what's one more?

Good point.

Were it me, I would play "On-Foot" the orc barbarian/frenzied berserker with Headlong Rush and one of those crazy lances from Unapproachable East that deal thousands of damage with the right feat stack.

That's just me though.

My best honest suggestion to you is to play something out of Tomb of battle. It is very similar to 4e fighters, but is "balanced" for 3.5 as well as anything in that system is balanced to something else.

Maybe 20 levels of each, and then 20 of some prestige classes?

At 3E epic levels, you should REALLY be playing a spellcaster. They are broken beyond all rational belief by 15th level - at 80th level, they're beyond comprehension. You can create or destroy whole planes of existence by then, or use a single spell to find any creature on any plane, circumvent its protections, and disintegrate it. Wish spells can be dropped regularly, as a matter of course. You can have a ball of platinum the size of a moon (it's in the treasure guidelines in the Epic Level Handbook, check and see). Playing anything other than a caster at that level is a waste of time, because the casters can do anything. It's one of the reasons that 3E was broken at epic levels - only the casters had fun.

To put the power of epic casters in perspective, a level 21 wizard can throw suns. Yes, you read that right, the wizard can throw suns. With the corresponding damage in the millions of dice and all. And no save. No 4e character that isn't the Apocalypse Twins with dual actions folded into a single character has a hope in hell of doing anything at level 21, much less level 80.

Wait... How does the throwing suns thing work? I've never heard that one, and it sounds absolutely hilarious.

Well, assuming there's one close enough... I suppose you could with the spell Telekinesis, since the sun is composed of gas ligher than air. 0 weight = within spell limits. Just stack up on feats to increase your range and cast some sort of immune to fire spell.

Umm... You're composed of molecules that, while frequently heavier than air, still have negligible mass on their own. Even when bound together into complex compounds, they still have very little mass by everyday standards. But you can't just go pulling out specific molecules from something with Telekinesis (or if you can, it's far more powerful than any reasonable DM would permit). And even if you could, you're still limited to however many pounds of material, which isn't throwing around a sun so much as creating a short-lived cloud of gas at solar temperatures. And that's basically Fireball, if you think about it.

On the other hand, if you COULD use Telekinesis to play with individual molecules, you could have so much fun. (Especially if you've got physicists and chemists in your party and your DM's an English major, for a not-at-all random example.) "I use Telekinesis - on all his hemoglobin. He asphyxiates." Or, "I remove all of the calcium from his skull. It's now as difficult to break as a porcelain plate."

...?

Please... don't even consider this. You can't translate 4e back into 3.5. It won't work. You can't take a 4e character and play it in 3.5 as a 4e character.

Make a 3.5 character and don't give your DM a headache. Be considerate.
