My other question takes a bit of backstory explaining. I, as a level 1 Wizard, have a dog for my familiar. My DM was kind enough to tweak the rules for it because I had a really good backstory to allow it. My dog gives me a +3 Search, in the way a toad familiar gives +3 HP and a snake familiar gives +3 Bluff. My question is, if I were to get armor for my dog, and equiped it onto him, and I were to recall him, would he keep the armor on, or would it clatter to the floor? Whenever I summoned him, would he have his armor on, and be all ready to go? |

Your 12 means you can cast level 2 or lower spells even should you make it to 10th level wizard. Since being only able to cast level 2 or lower spells makes being a higher level wizard pointless, most players stop at Lv 3 or 4 with a 12 Int.
#2: This is DM dependent, but I would rule your dog familiar's armor stays with him at all times unless you take it off. Therefore, when you recall him, he shows up armored. |

Once summoned, he never leaves until he dies , is dismissed, or walks away. Regardless, you can't unsummon and resummon him. He is just always around.
And what Kishri said about wizard int scores. |
| (Reply to #2)MajorBroloone | Thank you a bunch for your help, I'll direct my DM to your post, and we can get this stuff sorted out. |
| (Reply to #3)MajorBroloone | My DM is doing my familiar a *little* weird, so I'll explain as best I can. My familiar (A Dog) was summoned/created by my character because his old dog that he loved died, and after eight years he met a wizard who would help/tutor him to become a wizard and bring him back. So my character became a wizard so he could summon his familiar by channeling him through a part of his old dog, and the DM said that now that I have him, I can summon/unsummon him once per day. I'll talk to him about the whole permanent summon thing, though, because what you're saying makes sense. The way he put it to me though was that since most wizards have quite small familiars (ravens, toads, snakes, etc) they wouldn't bother to unsummon them since they're small enough to hide and wouldn't participate in combat. |
| (Reply to #5)cougon | As I understand the rules as written, familiars aren't summoned or unsummoned like the animal summoning spells. What they do is magically call an animal to their location and bond with it, gaining a bonus through this bond. The animal will stay with you until it is killed, you are killed, or you choose to dismiss it and call a different animal to be your familiar. It's very similar to the animal companion that Druids and Rangers get in that regard. If you want a class that has a companion that you can summon and unsummon, check out the Summoner class in one of the Pathfinder books. Otherwise, unless your DM is doing something weird, your animal companion will always be around with you, so be careful around AOE spells. |
