5th Edition Can magic attacks crit?

While I have seen statements in older editions and incarnations of The Game mention that it would take a feat to make a magical attack critically hit.

Because there seem to be far fewer save-type magical attacks, now, magical attacks seem to be closer to the melee and ranged- after all, they are competing with AC.  Mechanically, it would appear magical attacks qualify for critical hits.

Any official word on this burning question?

Why isn't however your table decides to run it official enough? Just talk it over with the people who actually matter (ie; who ever you play with). Accept that the answer might change table to table.

According to the rules, if it involves an attack roll and has dice involved in determining how much damage is dealt, it benefits from the critical hit rules (which are part of the larger rules that govern how to make an attack).

That aside, I agree with CCS - Whatever your group wants to do is the only "official" that matters.

Personally - I wish rolling a 1 on your saving throw would have the same effect as a crit, but a man can dream, right?

I'm also interested in what the official ruling on this is. The rules seem to read that a magic hit can crit like a melee or ranged like the Human XP says. But the damage seems out of porportion with the rest of the game when magic attacks can crit.
