| #1angelus_obscuraMar 13, 2010 13:53:21 | Okay, I'll get right to it as I don't have much time. In our last gaming session, my character "crash" landed her elemental/spelljamming airship in the Elven forest/nation of Caen (Iron Kingdoms). For those unaware of Iron Kingdoms, it is a campaign setting set in the same world as Warmachine. Now the elves in that world are isolationists, and a dying breed. Our DM explains that they have forgotten their god (Corellon) and their link to their fey ancestry is severed. Hence the dying breed. Anyways, our mission was given to us by Corellon himself, who invested our elven ranger with a measure of his divine spark to carry to those worlds of his "lost" children (ie Caen and soon Eberron). After exiting the phlogiston, we hemmed and hawed over how we should enter Caen. I wanted stealth, others wanted different things. So I gave up and decided to dive in, fire and air elementals blazing hot. As we got closer, the forest erupted in magic missile cannonfire. I had our ship's weapons deflect most of the heavy fire, but my ship took a beating (30/400 hp left). I managed to land without crashing in a glade. Then, elves, in what I can only describe as Iron Man armor, came out of the woods and surrounded us. End of session. How should I greet them? Act nonchalant as if what I did was a frequent act? Tell them from the onset we come bearing message from their lost god and how to solve their problem? I mean, we came in looking like a hostile enemy. plz. Game tomorrow. ![]() |

I'd rather base the answer on both personality and the thoughts of the character in question, than JUST on the situation at hand. Could be hilarious Cute kitty btw :3 |
| #3angelus_obscuraMar 13, 2010 20:05:49 | I'm playing a half-elf bard/Lyrandar Wind-rider. I've modeled her after Cpt. Dylan Hunt from the tv show, Andromeda. I even gave my airship its very own avatar (via familiar). Anyways, I doubt I can channel Kevin Sorbo and just blast my way out of every sitch. xD I've already tried thinking of ways to aproach the issue, but I can't get agrasp on anything good. I guess it will depend on what their reaction is. I mean, we all examined a map of Caen and discussed how/when/where to land. Every other place we could have landed was either a human settlement or dwarven or something other than the desired target: elves. There was a wastelend south of the forest that would have been the ideal landing spot, but again, we would have to travel over empty lands full of unknown dangers and then try ad get thru the outer defenses of the elves; alot of red tape. My character is brash, with kiwis the size of Jupiter (metaphoric). So she opted to just drop into the middle of the elven forest and show off the airship. |
| #4angelus_obscuraMar 14, 2010 0:11:04 | Okay, so I found and read some really interesting info about the elves of Iron Kingdoms. Apparently, they have living gods, around whom they built their city-temples. Now those gods are dead except 2, a goddess who is dying and with her the future of the elves, and far to the north is the god of the snow elves (kept secret even from their southern kin). EXTREMELY xenophobic, they are almost like the drow of Xen'drik in their regard to outsiders. And their treatment of half-elves is ... bad, to say the least. ![]() I guess the only way to survive is to pass off our elven ranger/Proxy of Corellon as a living god of our own. yikes. |
| #5CCSMar 14, 2010 0:51:25 | Well, you could always try the old standards of "We come in piece." or "Take us to your leader". ![]() |

| #7sallaMar 14, 2010 19:06:55 | I can't think of a single character of mine who would have even taken that job. Messing around with other people's religion never turns out well. |

| #11angelus_obscuraApr 03, 2010 1:35:33 | Wow, this thread is still alive and kickin'? Thanks for the advice you guys posted. Here is a log of what happened. Dramatis Personae Cpt. Illyria Emilie Anteros d'Lyrandar (me) - 1/2 elf valor bard/lyrandar wind-rider Varis - elf ranger/divine oracle of Corellon (and divine proxy) Zefer - elf battlemind/zephyr Crow - changeling darklock/familiar keeper Kal Ra - githzerai monk/ghostalker Lorgash - trollkin apprentice monk (npc) Captain's Log Chapter 35: Invisible Threats Daystar Clarion, From the Phlogiston to Deep Ironspace 23rd Alturiak, 1359 DR The planars consulted with one another about what to do with the Dwarven Citadel, and decided to leave it alone for now. There were too many unknowns and pressing concerns to dwell on it further. They mystery of their deaths had been solved, and raiding it would be too risky. After several more hours of travel, the fleet found the opening in the sphere and lined up single file to pass through the portal, even though there was space for them to fly through abreast. They left one flitter outside as a sentry, just in case. As Daystar Clarion approached the portal's edge, the ship suddenly slowed. Everyone onboard felt the air become heavy, and their movements and speech found similar resistance to being underwater. Worst of all, they began to feel fatigued as their life's energy was being drained away. Zefer bravely ran across the deck and put on the only gadabout, which partially protected him from the draining effect while the other crewmen and passengers were sprawled out on the deck, barely conscious. Illyria commanded the fire shield to be lowered, and the burning ring ignited the phlogiston, as well as something else. The Daystar Clarion was ejected into the sphere, damaged from the explosion. Everyone was unconscious and dying, except for Zefer. He started going round, trying to stabilize everyone. Lorgash quickly regained consciousness, having regenerated from the life drain, and aided the General. Everyone regained consciousness to see the outlines of a Manta Ray like creature several miles in length leave the portal and fly deeper into the Phlogistion. They also saw that the explosion had damaged the two Man-O-Wars, and had obliterated the lone Flitter. Another Flitter was released as the capital ships approached and passed through the portal. All told, five crewman were killed by the explosion in the entire fleet. Commander Fhenaria explained that the creature, a Lumineaux, is a kind of portal keeper, draining the life force of creatures who enter or leave crystal spheres. The danger now was scavengers who feast on the flotsam that typically exit the Phlogiston. Gray Scavvers, large flying fish with a single, central eye and a mouth full of sharp teeth, were lying in wait on the interior of the sphere. The fish swarmed Daystar Clarion, and but the weakened shipmen were able to repel the attack. The fish were not hardy, but their deadly jaws did inspire fear of death in the weakened mortals. Fhenaria told them that the fish were edible, so Illyria had the fish used in preparation for a stew, though she kept one of them for her own study and collection. It was a refreshing change of pace, different than the journey bread and hard tact that they had been subsisting on for the last three months. Chapter 36: The Watcher Daystar Clarion, Ironspace 4th Ches, 1359 DR Ironspace was frigid in comparison to Realmspace and the Phlogiston, and the planars had to wear furs while traveling through wildspace. The sphere was a small one, containing a sun at the center, one major planetary body in orbit of the sun, and three lesser bodies in orbit around the planet. It reminded Commander Fhenaria of Krynnspace, though here all three moons were visible. The absence of Vasco for nearly two weeks was noticed, but no one acknowledged it. General Zefer knew the truth, but he remained tightlipped about it. Silmara had discretely transferred him from Daystar Clarion, and had him court-martialed aboard the Void Dragon. He was found guilty of plotting a mutiny against the Lt. Commander. The Elven Imperial Navy does not execute mutineers, and the normal sentence of marooning a person was commuted given Vasco's medical condition. Instead, he is being held in a locked room onboard the Man-O-War, and will be banished to Sigil once Gorrien's business on Caen is concluded, and Vasco can spend his share on buying his heart back. After over a week of flying towards the center of the sphere, the air had become stagnant, but that would be resolved once they made contact with the atmosphere of the planet Caen. The observer Cook cried out, "land mass ahoy!" An asteroid was blocking their course, and while the fleet navigated around the obstruction, the asteroid changed its movement to intercept. As the ships approached the object, Illyria observed a living, breathing humanoid on the surface. The figure wore a toga, had grayish-yellow skin and a partially exposed cranium, protected by several bone ridges that met at the base of his head. He was sitting, deep in reflection, gazing at the world nearby. She ordered Commander Fhenaria to make contact with the entity. The figure looked up, directly at them now, and communicated back with the psionic commander. "He introduces himself as The Contemplator. He wants to know what who we are." Fhenaria relayed. "Tell him we're travelers from beyond the sphere." Illyria said. The commander communicated this, and tells Illyria, "he wishes for us to come to his asteroid." Illyria consulted with the `command staff'. Commander Fhenaria and General Zefer were interested, but reluctant. Crow was enthusiastically interested, while Varis was just pensive about the affair. Illyria walked out of the pilot house, and observed Druid Einearth merrily trimming the living shield to the ship while the Engineer Whiteleaf happily ordered some of the crewmen to aid her in making a morphic hull utilizing some reagents and components given to her by the General. Illyria decided to risk it, and ordered l'Ouragan to bring the ship in. As the ship approached the figure, a marble landing platform came into existence. The ship fit snugly into the dock, and a staircase rose up from the surface. As Captain Illyria and her crew stepped down onto the ground, grand pillars rose from the ground, as did a magnificent fountain that gently sprayed clear water onto itself. A Parthenon rose up from the ground, and upon entering it they saw satin pillows, silken heaps of cloth, and sedan chairs. The hall was open, but there was no breeze. As far as the crew could ascertain, there was no air, yet they were able to breath and speak comfortably. The figure they had seen from afar was a man of titan proportions, and he gently spoke directly to their minds, "please, sit and make yourself comfortable. May I offer you some refreshments?" As they sat themselves, small tables rose up from the ground and platters full of cheese and meats, along with goblets of wine, spun into existence. Crow was the only one to partake. The Contemplator immediately began to bombard them with questions, what they were, how their ship operated, how they traveled through wildspace, what are homelands like. They answered his questions as best they could, telling their own individual tales, and he was utterly fascinated by their stories. He had no idea there was life beyond his own sphere. He had no idea it was a sphere. He had dwelt here since the world was created, though he knew not how it came into existence. He watched as the gods gave birth to the races, and watched as those races fought against one another, as well as amongst themselves. He very much contemplated the nature of the universe, and to find out it was a multiverse only caused him to ask more questions. He wanted to know how the multiverse came into being, and how it would end. After several hours it was clear his questions were inexhaustible, and he was not satisfied with the answers that they had given him. He did, however, realize they were tired and in need of rest as mortals, and he offered to let them rest for the night here on his asteroid. They agreed, though all but Crow returned to the ship. Crow spoke with The Contemplator well into the night. Back at the ship, Varis was particularly nervous, remembering an encounter with a dragon who was equally as fascinated by mortal beings, and who had intended to keep them for several years to fulfill his desire for companionship. He feared that this timeless being would do the same. It turned out his fears were unfounded, in the morning the planars explained the urgency of their quest, and the contemplator begged their forgiveness. "I apologize for keeping you from your task. I will tell you anything that you believe might help you. I only ask that you stop by my asteroid before you leave this sphere." They did ask him about the Elves, where they lived, and why they were dying. He told them a long and sad story about the Empire of Lyoss. How the Elven gods gave lived amongst the people as Avatars, but the people were not satisfied with simulacrums. Their sages built The Bridge of Worlds, a portal that would permit the Elven gods to leave the Veld and enter Caen in all their glory. After many centuries, the bridge was built, but the instant the gods stepped through the bridge was shattered and the empire set aflame, hundreds of thousands of Elves died immediately, and the continent was scourged. The gods, weakened, took what few Elves survived and headed West to the land they named Ios. The Gods found their power waning, and their Elven children became vulnerable to disease and old age. The gods knew that they could not remain on Caen forever, and left their people in search of a way home. Several centuries passed, and some of the Elves left Ios in search of the Gods. Several centuries more passed when the Elves of Ios found their divine magic was rendered inert, save for the Elves of Scryah, mid-wife to the gods and harbinger of the spring. A century later she returned to Ios, Scryah, and fell into a deep slumber from which she has not awakened for many millennia. Her power has continued to fade since that time, and the Elves have suffered even greater hardships. Their children are being born soulless, and they believe that soon they will be a dead race. They leave the asteroid with heavy hearts for their kinsmen. Chapter 37: Landfall! From Daystar Clarion, Ironspace to Ios, Western Immorren, Caen 7th Ches, 1359 DR It took another day to reach Caen, and then there came a time to decide their approach. Do they go straight into Ios, land in the northen mountains of Rhul, in the Western kingdoms of Llael or Cygnar, or in the barren Bloodstone Marches. After much debate, Captain Illyria decided to take the ship down at night to the Elven kingdom directly, with the fire elemental unleashed to its full brightness to herald the coming of the Proxy of Corellon Larethian. The ship's air refreshed as it made contact with the air envelope surrounding the planet, and night fell as Daystar Clarion made its final approach. When the lush forest, lightly dusted with snow, came into focus as they neared, bright blue-green pulses from the surface hurtled toward them. Illyria was not sure what they were until they struck the ship with devastating force. She ordered l'Ouragan to bring the ship down to the surface quickly as volley after volley erupted from the wood and pounded against the ship's hull. The pilot tried to steer the elemental as best he could, but as he continued the descent he began to fear that his Captain was leading the crew to its doom. She pressed the ship through the barrage and leaned against the wall of the ship as it violently shook with the hammering of the energy blasts. When the ship finally made it to safety in a clearing below the canopy of the wood, Illyria gulped with apprehension. The clinking of armor could be heard, and in the night the glint of steel was seen around them. Turquoise light flared into existence from numerous points as soldiers wearing heavy armor and gauntlets channeled magic, ready to strike at the crew of the ship. |
| #12angelus_obscuraApr 04, 2010 9:49:45 | Iron Elf: Extremis Chapter 39: Heresy Ios, Western Immoren, Caen Malleus 4th, Casteus 606 AR The Iosan Elves were surprised to see Elves on board the ship, but the long hair and clothes each of the Planars sported were enough to make them hostile. There was a tense silence as the bottom of the ship was surrounded by Elves. They wore heavy white plate with glowing turquoise runes while cloaked Elves in glowing breast plates imprinted with silver orbs and chains gripped their hands tightly to charge their arcane gauntlets. The air was tense, but neither side made an aggressive move. "Who is your leader?" Illyria shouted in Elvish, a very traditional spelljammer greeting when making first contact with groundlings. One of the cloaked Elves replied, "she is coming." The ground shuddered; and shuddered again; and again and again. The sound of bending branches could be heard as breaking through the pines and into the clearing came two massive mechanical giants over twenty feet tall. One carried a sword nearly as long as itself while the other had two mighty fists. They were being driven mentally by an Elven female warcaster who stood between them. She had dark hair dyed blue-green and wore powered armor. The woman surveyed the field, and in Elvish demanded, "I am Kaelyssa, identify yourselves!" Crow stepped from below decks, having transformed his body into that of an elf, and proudly trumpeted, "we are the crew of the Daystar Clarion, and we bear the holy host of your god's divine will," at this the Elves' ears picked up, "we bear the proxy of Corellon Larethian, Varis Nalio!" At this the Elves hissed, and Kaelyssa, seeing non-Elves onboard the ship standing aside the proxy, shouted, "Annihilate the heretics!" The Battle Mages unleashed force bolts, the first of which caught Illyria in the chest and Fhenaria in the head, sending them both sailing off the ship. The other Planars ducked down, save for Saito, wizard attaché to General Zefer. Saito blasted the field with a fire ball, scattering the Dawnguard Sentinels. Crow targeted the disoriented Sentinels with his Eldritch blasts while the two Myrmidons charged at the ship. They started tearing it apart as Illyria and Fhenaria became surrounded by Sentinels. Varis charged off the ship and ran through the sentinels and towards Kaelyssa while Kal Ra and Lorgash leapt down to defend their fallen comrades. They fended off the soldiers just as riflemen emerged from the wood and flanked the Planars. The bullets tore through the planar's clothes and armor, and Kaelyssa smiled as she fended off Varis' attacks. Then Crow began to target the Battle Mages, but their breastplate armor generated a field that deflected the attacks. So Saito unleashed a wall of fire upon their ranks, incinerating all of them instantly. Kaelyssa was not faring well against Varis' blade, and summoned her Myrmidons back to defend her. Varis quickly went down under their assault, and things looked grim. Lorgash reached Illyria and revived her. She flew up to a tree and gave a great shout. Her crew unloaded themselves from the ship and swarmed the Myrmidons, buying time for her to magically inspire Varis with further stamina. The Proxy stood up and delivered a blow to Kaelyssa that rendered her unconscious. The Myrmidons went inert and the survivors of the battle surrendered. While Kal Ra and Varis had used subduing attacks, Crow's and Saito's magic was lethal. There were numerous dead on both sides; for the planars, the list included Fhenaria, Jahn, Cook, Krieger and Homble. The Planars disarmed the survivors, and bound them. Magister Larschiv was conscious, and as the highest ranking enemy combatant the Planars interrogated him. "Where did you come from?" Illyria asked. "We had come from a nearby compound. Observers spotted the ship from afar, we thought it was a human vessel of some kind." he said. "And the fact that you saw Elves onboard didn't bother you?" she asked. He coldly stated, "The fact that you are Elves, wouldn't stay are hand. There are numerous dissident elements within the empire, and the fact that he spoke as a prophet of an unknown god only gave Kaelyssa justification for attacking." "Why?" "The Fane of Scryah is the only church now, and it's blasphemy to claim other gods still live. She is barely alive herself, in a coma since she returned to us generations ago. As her life wanes, so does ours. Our children are being born soulless, and she needs our support now more than ever." "We are here to tell you that Corellon Larethian is the true creator of the elves, and he can save your people." Varis said. "We come from beyond this world, beyond the stars. That vessel has taken us over an unfathomable distance to save your, our people." "You say that while your friends cast magic like humans, killing our last goddess. You don't care anything for our people." Larschiv responded. "But I do, you just don't understand what's outside your own forest. How do you even know that human magic is killing Scryah?" Varis said. "The Weave is delicate, and it requires centuries of study to be able to cast magic without tearing it apart. Humans don't live long enough to learn that, nor do they have magical blood in their veins. The only way they can tap into the weave is by tearing it apart." "And how does that affect Scryah?" Varis asked. "She is a goddess, a divine being of pure magic. This mortal realm drains her as it is, human mages dabbling with magic only expediate her descent. That's why we kill them." "You hunt human wizards?" Illyria asked. "Not me, not personally, but the Mage Hunters, they are the only ones to leave the kingdom and travel to the human lands. They assassinate them, intimidating others into abandoning their ways." "You have to believe me that there is another way, that murder and antagonism aren't the way." "Prove it," Kaelyssa interrupted from the corner where she was tied up. "Would you care to go for a ride?" Crow said. "Not that," she coldly stated. "I don't care where you came from or what your ship is capable of. Prove that you speak on behalf of a God." Varis went over to her, intoned a prayer to Corellon, and healed her battle wounds. She recognized the divine magic for what it was, "There is someone you must meet with." |
