A D&D session gone bad - I need some opinions

Alright, so today's D&D went kinda bad. It wasn't outrageous or anything, but there are several things that got to me, and I'd like your opinion on it. This is what happened.

We are playing a campaign in which we all must be evil. There are 4 of us, and I am playing a Visilight (MM III), who can basically paralyze with a stare, and drain charisma. He is a paladin of tyranny 4, lawful evil.

The first several sessions were done without me since I could not get an idea of what to play with, plus it was my first time as an evil character so I had some trouble with coming up with a character.

So, as he introduced me to the campaign today, he said I appeared in a cell, and the first thing I noticed outside of the cell were around 10 people fighting, 3 of which were the PCs (my group). Now, me being unaware of what was happening I took my greathammer (a 2 handed hammer) and smashed the cell open. I saw one guy cowering, and not knowing who my enemies really were (I assumed they had something to do with me appearing in the cell), I decided to drain the guy's charisma to make myself more powerful, since I wasn't sure what awaits me further.

In the attempt to survive a potentially dangerous situation, I kept using my paralyzing gaze and cha drain ability in order to become stronger and more capable of surviving the dangers ahead.

I also used divine purification (60 feet radius, 1d8 + cha healing, or same amount of damage to undead) and in the process, accidentally hurt one of the PCs in an attempt to heal myself of some of the damage I received during the battle. I believe this was good roleplay decision, since my character doesn't really know who's on his side and who's not, or if anyone at all is on his side.

After the battle was over, 2 of the PCs almost died, but we calmed down, and talked a bit. Since I am a visilight and cannot talk, I use sheets of paper and write in order to communicate. Another PCs does the same as he was stripped of his ability to talk.

After this there was one survivor, and the PCs took her hostage in order to find out who sent them. It appeared that someone had sent those NPCs to kill the PCs, and they wanted to know who. The woman that was tortured had done a LOT of damage to my character in the battle and was particularly aggressive in attacking him.

After quite some time of torturing the NPC (and getting no useful information at all), I decided to drain her charisma and just kill her off, because I had gotten sick of waiting, it took too long. The PC that had been torturing her attacked me, doing some damage in the process and then ran away, as he knew that my retaliation would certainly kill him (even though I didn't really mean to kill him anyway).

After draining her cha, I used divine purification to heal myself of the damage caused to me by the PC that attacked me. The burst of energy killed one of the PCs, even though I didn't mean to do it. I told the DM that I won't do it after all, as I realized it would kill the PC. The DM did not respond to this, even though I said it several times.

The DM then stands up, takes my char sheet, and rips it into several pieces, saying I am out of the campaign. He said he was sick of my crap, and apparently, I didn't role play properly. From what I gathered he was angry that I almost killed 2 PCs, and that I killed the woman that was supposed to give us information. Maybe he was also ****** that I demolished 2 of his NPC in a single blow, but he didn't say anything about that, so this may not have any relevance to his actions towards me.

I am, however, really surprised at his behavior, as he is a nice guy overall, and this was the first time I saw him act like that. And I can say I really disliked being treated that way, I didn't like it at all what he did to me in front of several of my friends.

To make it worse, the rest of the PCs had played evil characters many times in his campaign, and did a LOT of stupid stuff. One PC burned 2 forests down just for fun, when he was asked why, he just answered in a reply that was basically down to "I am evil, so that's why." Another PC (my brother), killed 12 gnome orphans just to test his great cleave feat with his barbarian. Another time, he blew up the entire docks just for fun, because he found a ton of gun powder in a warehouse.

The DM just laughed at all of this (fully knowing it was stupid and out of hand to do such a thing, and that there was no reason to do so for any of the PCs) and the campaigns continued. There were many other instances where similar things happened and the DM did nothing about it. Such as killing merchants for potions because they could not afford them, or burning down inns (one of the things they did with inns was get into an argument with an inn keeper INTENTIONALLY, so they could use the argument later as an excuse for killing the inn keeper, and burning the inn down), and sometimes even killing random people because they "annoyed" them.

the DM never did anything about this, except for maybe 2 times, where he dealt with the problem in-game by having them executed. But this was just 2 times out of 100 so...

Now, I do admit I did a stupid thing by killing the woman as they needed more info from her, but other than that I don't think I've done anything wrong.

Now, I don't get it. All the other PCs did so much crap when playing evil characters, and the DM did nothing about most of the time, except maybe 2-3 times. He never punished them for it, never said anything to them about it, he just laughed it off. And now, I make just 1 or 2 GENUINE mistakes (they were not intended, and tbh, it's the first time I ever played an evil char, and I had problems fitting into the role as it was), the DM rips my char sheet apart, and throws me out of the campaign on my first session.

The DM in question is my friend, so we know each other well, the same goes for the other PCs, one being a guy I knew since I was a kid, the other being my brother, and the 4th guy also being a friend of mine, but I've only known him for a few months now (he's a really ok guy though).

So, was it really my fault? I cant imagine it is, especially considering all of the above...I don't understand why he had to throw me out of the campaign, rip my char sheet apart just like that for making a couple of genuine mistakes (at most), which was not really ok to do in front of my other friends. All the while, the rest of the PCs used to play evil chars all the time, killing orphans, burning down forests and inns, blowing up docks and houses, killing random people, and merchants etc, for no reason whatsoever. And he never did this to them.

Atm, I am seriously considering not playing with him again at all (a hard decision, as we have gamed together for many years, plus, if I don't game with him, I can't game with the rest of the group because the group always consists of the same people, more or less). To make matters worse, 2 of the PCs (except the newest guy) approved of the DMs decision.

I feel I have been severely wronged. I admit I made some mistakes, but considering what other PCs used to do (intentionally as well, whereas my mistakes were not intentional, but rather accidental), the stuff I (accidentally) did was nothing compared to the stuff they did. And the DM never treated any of them this way. Not to mention that even in this campaign they still do crap such as kill city guards, and have already provoked 2 major fights between them and the guards (this is hearsay, but they said themselves that they had 2 fights, and it would appear that those fights were started for no reason as well, from what my brother told me). Of course I could be wrong as far as the city guards go, as I said it's hearsay, so the info may not be 100% correct, but knowing my friends, it is quite possible that it's true.

Edit: Just asked my brother about the 1st fight against the guards, and yes it was started for a stupid reason (because one player felt the need to use the fireballs in the middle of a city to kill a single gnome, who was defending himself from my brother who wanted to rob him immediately after they entered the city). The 2nd fight was basically because the guards found them again and wanted to take them in. So yeah...

I know this is a very long post, sorry for that. But I wanted to make sure I told you the whole thing in detail. Opinions are welcome, and thanks a lot for reading.

Right, I don't know any 3:ed rules but anyway.
I am, however, really surprised at his behavior, as he is a nice guy overall, and this was the first time I saw him act like that.

Sounds like out-of-game trouble to me.
Maybe something in his daily life is bothering him, and being in a bad mood he "snapped" a little and happened to take it out on you, probably not on purpose. Or maybe he has some other quarrel with you, and used the game as punishment.

See if you or your brother can find out wich, if its the former then maybe you could forgive the DM, if it's the latter you'd be better off in another group I suppose, especially since 2 other players "approved" ?
I wonder a bit about the general age of the group...Sounds like mostly very young people to me.

I can't see any flaw in your behaviour from your side of the story.
You had no initial clue who was PC or NPC in the initial fight from what I could tell, both IC and OOC..So what are you supposed to do, ask the guy if he's friendly or not before you hammer his head in ?
Also you where supposed to be evil...Should you even care ?
Especially since this was your first evil character ever, one could expect a little bit of leniency with botched roleplaying if that was truly the case.

Also if the woman on the torture rack had vital campain information, the DM made several mistakes by:
1. Not having her give this information when tortured
2. Letting her die before information was given
3. Not have a backup plan to give out the information

People being *******s is still people being *******s, whether or not you were doing something wrong in game.

Without giving a word of warning to a player that there doing something wrong, in a campaign where there unsure how there exactly meant to play, is being an *******...

---

On another off note, if you still want to play in that campaign, call the guy up and explain your angry that he didn't tell you you were doing something wrong. Ask him to say something before ripping a character sheet to shreds.

It sounds to me like he doesn't have a problem when you're killing orphans or other NPCs, but that he does have a problem with what he might percieve as PC infighting.

Seems stupid, though; at least from your side of the story, you did very well roleplaying.

I personally would just not play in evil campaigns. I've not been in one that hasn't given me a headache or ****** me off somehow. If you wanna have some non-good fun, do a neutral or chaotic neutral 'pirate' or 'bandit' campagin. Now those are a lot of fun.

My suggestion: print out your first post and hand it to your friend to read then have a conversation about what happened(both in the game and to your character sheet) and why these things happened(as in motivations for making the decisions).

I'd advise the DM he's being unfair and arbitrary, you were well withing the role of evil.

I'd tell him "I'm not fired, you are." And form a new group with the players you like and get along with.

This is a typical reason of why it's so hard to do Evil campaigns.
1. You have to expect things to go out of hand.
2. Players usually don't know the difference between Sinister personality and chaotic sociopathic behavior.

No, the 2 of us don't have any out of game trouble between us, as a matter of fact, everything is perfectly fine as far me and the DM are concerned, we actually never had any quarrels, because I am a decent, quiet player, and have never been a troublemaker, or disrupted his campaign. As far as real life issues are concerned, I have none with him, it's all perfectly fine.

This is why I am surprised at his behavior. You may be right, maybe he has other real life issues and took it out on me. If this is the case, I can't really blame him, we all snap from time to time...

See if you or your brother can find out wich, if its the former then maybe you could forgive the DM, if it's the latter you'd be better off in another group I suppose, especially since 2 other players "approved" ?
I wonder a bit about the general age of the group...Sounds like mostly very young people to me.

1. Not having her give this information when tortured
2. Letting her die before information was given
3. Not have a backup plan to give out the information

I tried talking to the DM 3 (yes, three) times during the campaign about the problem, all 3 times he just told me to bugger off, and was saying something about me killing the woman and attacking the PCs, and draining the cha of my enemies. My attempts to discuss the problem kinda failed...

And tbh, after the last session I really don't feel like talking to him. It's not about the game really, it's about his behavior, because I am always the one who always makes a genuine attempt at enjoying the campaign and playing my char, and in the end I get hosed...

I am 22 years old, the rest of them are 1-2 years younger.

And yes, I agree it was kinda poor the way the DM solved the issue with the tortured woman. He actually decided to kick me from the campaign instead of doing one of the 3 above mentioned things.

On another off note, if you still want to play in that campaign, call the guy up and explain your angry that he didn't tell you you were doing something wrong. Ask him to say something before ripping a character sheet to shreds.

This is one of the things that bother me most - his behavior. He didn't give me one single word of warning. After I drained the woman's cha, he just stood up, and ripped up my char sheet. No warning, not even a word, nothing. He just ripped it up and said I am not playing anymore. I basically got kicked from the group.

Tried talking to him 3 times, and I really don't feel like talking to him again. Not because I am angry but because I can't be bothered tbh...the whole thing is kinda stupid and very unfair.

It sounds to me like he doesn't have a problem when you're killing orphans or other NPCs, but that he does have a problem with what he might percieve as PC infighting.

Seems stupid, though; at least from your side of the story, you did very well roleplaying.

It's actually funny, because before the fight started, the DM told me "Remember, you just appeared here, and you have no idea who's your ally and who's your foe, if you got any at all." He basically even anticipated that I *might* hurt the PCs as I did not know what was going on.

And yes, you are right about evil campaigns...I actually missed 5 sessions of this evil campaign...and you wanna know the reason why I missed them? I did it on purpose because I knew it would be a disaster from the beginning. Ironic, isn't it?

I have a lot of experience with evil campaigns (I always play a char of a good alignment though, even though there's always at least one evil char in my group - what can I say, my friends can never really resist killing orphans and burning stuff down, and killing random people - this was my first time as an evil char, as I already said), and so far I've never had an evil campaign that has gone in a good direction. I joined this one because my brother kept bugging me. The reason I kept declining to join was because I knew the campaign was all evil, and thus bound to go wrong in some way. As I said, ironic...

have you had prior conflicts with this guy?

this sounds...just odd.

Nope, none whatsoever. This is why I am baffled at the whole thing...I don't get it at all.

Have you asked your friend what specifically was the problem or problems that caused him to react as he did?

Yes, he seemed upset about 2 in particular (though there could be more, my attempts to talk to him failed): first, he was somehow upset about me killing the woman, and second he also seemed upset about me draining cha from my enemies.

My suggestion: print out your first post and hand it to your friend to read then have a conversation about what happened(both in the game and to your character sheet) and why these things happened(as in motivations for making the decisions).

I already explained to him everything I wrote above, in detail. He just disagreed with everything, and basically gave me a "silent" kick from the group ny ripping my sheet into pieces. He was not amused, and was pretty pi***d at the way I played my char...though I can't really see what I did wrong. I do admit that I did make a mistake by killing the woman, but that could have been easily fixed.

I'd advise the DM he's being unfair and arbitrary, you were well withing the role of evil.

I'd tell him "I'm not fired, you are." And form a new group with the players you like and get along with.

Too late, he beat me to it :P Besides I'm not the kind of player who leaves a game because of some trouble. I try to solve it with a civilized discussion, but that didn't work either here.

But yes, I too feel that he was quite unfair.

This is a typical reason of why it's so hard to do Evil campaigns.
1. You have to expect things to go out of hand.
2. Players usually don't know the difference between Sinister personality and chaotic sociopathic behavior.

The ironic part is, I am the only group member who actually knows how to play an evil char (I'm not the best, but I think I did decent). To the other PCs, being evil means they can do whatever they want, whenever they want, to whom they want. To them it's just about killing and destruction, regardless of actual alignment. They will almost always fight and kill everything in sight, and burn all they can, unless the DM threatens them with a force of 200 city guards. This is the only thing that prevents them from killing. But once nighttime comes, they start again and ALWAYS manage to escape the city guards.

I, on the other hand, while not an experienced evil player, know that this is NOT the way to play an evil char. This only disrupts the campaign, and as far as I know, I did nothing to disrupt the campaign.

Yeah this is what had me pegging the group as very young...I would have guessed 13-14 or so. Guess that shows me I shouldnt generalize.

Basicly I think you should just let it go, find a new group.
From what I can tell the DM doesnt want you there at all, so why bother ?
If anything it can only aggrevate the matter.

Maybe there ARE grudges between you two..You just don't know about them.

Personally I'd re-evaluate how good of a friend this guy acctually is, ditto for the two guys that approved of kicking you out. As you said, it's not about the game, it's about the behaviour...And it sounds very unfriendly to me.
Not saying you should drop them as friends completly though.

I am thinking about letting it go. It's just a hard decision to make as I've gamed with them for years and they're the only group I have gamed with.

As far as personal grudges are concerned, I really don't think there are any. However, you might be right - maybe there are grudges, I just don't know that these grudges exist. As far as I know, everything is fine with the 2 of us...but maybe he has a problem with me, but he's just never mentioned it before. I don't know.

You may be right about me needing to re-evaluate the friendship. I'll be doing a lot of thinking on it, and on whether or not to quit gaming with them altogether.

It's about the behavior, yes, not the game. I never got angry at someone for killing me or anything. A bit immature, but what the heck...not the end of the world it's just a game.

I'm actually also thinking not gaming with the DM in question even if he does apologize and admits his mistake. The show he pulled on me in front of my friends is simply not acceptable in my eyes. You don't behave like that to a person, especially not in front of said person's friends. I remember having been really angry at some of them several times, but I have never done anything like that to them. You just don't do that to a friend.

I would have liked it more if he had hit me or something tbh. I could take that no problem, hell, I wouldn't even be angry at him if he had hit me...

Ok my bother just got a text message from the DM. He said he was sorry for what he did with the char sheet, and he also said that "I was not made for RPGs, and that he would fancy it if I did not game with them anymore."

So yeah, I guess that's it :P

Actually, he knew beforehand which race I was going to pick, it was no mystery to him, and he knew all of my special abilities. This campaign also had a special rule that you MUST choose a monster/aberration type that had at least 3 HD of it's type. He allowed the visilight.

Besides, I would have never played a visilight if he had made PHB races accessible to us. I usually don't go for monsters or aberrations, my favorite race is human.

I also believe he made unfair decisions. While we were discussing the whole thing he actually seemed to have been bothered by almost everything I did.

He was bothered that I killed the woman, that I drained cha, almost killed 2 PCs (accidentally). He also said something negative about me having chosen a race that can't speak, and about some other details. He was bothered by the fact that I fought, from what I gathered. Then again he kept yelling and screaming at me, so I didn't really understand all of it, but this was my impression.

He was also pretty vocal about my story how my visilight got on the material plane and said that the story was stupid and made little sense. Ironically, before I joined the campaign, he asked me to make a story of how my char came to the material plane. I presented him with the story, and he said it was ok. First session, he disses my story and calls it stupid, after having ripped up my char sheet and having yelled at me.

And this is considering that HE was the one who approved of the story in the first place. Hypocrisy anyone?

That DM is a complete idiot. I think he was jealous that you did such a good job with your character. To approve your character and backstory only to discover he didn't like how you were doing your character is a bit much. Recently, I had one PC who would randomly **** people but I wouldn't have mind it as much until he raped an innocent NPC. So in the next session, I tried to bring this under control. We had our arguments about this but we came up with a compromise and everything was cool.

The groups that played under are usually amoral but we know not to destroy everything and kill everyone. Last night, I play a character is a bit more evil but I know I shouldn't kill everyone in sight. I stole some money from this priest but I could have kill him but I didn't.

The fact that he said that I was not cut out for playing RPG games is kinda funny tbh. I started playing RPG games before he did from the age of 8 or 9 or so. I played a million RPG games on many consoles, and I also have a lot of experience as D&D player. I can role play better than the DM if I try, although he himself would never acknowledge this and considers himself the superior role player. But I am quite sure I could do better than him if there was a competition :P The very fact that he says that I am not cut out for RPGs is a laugh - I've played all sorts of RPGs my entire life, before he even knew what an RPG was (and I mean that literally).

If I told him this straight, he'd just laugh manically as to say he is superior. I know him :P

That DM is a complete idiot. I think he was jealous that you did such a good job with your character. Yeah it's a bit much. I really can't see what he was so upset about, and I can't see what I did wrong. And I definitely can't see why in the name of god he got so pi***d.

Although I gotta say this guy is not the type of guy who would get jealous, but who knows...I did completely own his NPCs in the fight, I one-shoted every single one of them and paralyzed them with my gaze while healing myself at the same time with divine purification, I killed 1 PC who was revived by his lord from the abyss and sent back, and another PC almost died from my divine purification. Later I accidentally killed him with it in an attempt to heal myself of the damage another PC did while attacking me.

So basically I totally owned his NPCs, and ACCIDENTALLY killed 2 PCs (and I honestly didn't mean to, but that was a part of my role playing, I didn't know who my enemies or allies were, or if I had any allies at all).

At least your players know not to kill people for fun, my friends usually just kill anything that looks at them the wrong way.

Actually, the visilight is not an undead

But yeah that's one of the things I don't understand. He says I don't know who's ally and who's enemy, and when I accidentally kill a PC, he seems to have an issue with it...

eh, whatever it is. don't have the MMIII. just looked it up on the internet though....

yeah, this thing is pretty much just a killing machine. he's a fool for thinking it would ever play nice with others.

Well you know I don't have to necessarily attack everyone just to steal their beauty. It's not smart because I don't wanna draw attention to myself. I will gladly drain cha from an enemy or something, but I'll never try to do it to a random person on the street for no reason.

But yeah the thing is a real killing machine lol. It took me 5 rounds to decimate 2 PCs, and 3-4 NPCs o_O And I didn't even know I was that powerful. I found out during the session when I realized that paralyzed target automatically receive critical hits from any weapon they are struck with...and since I add my cha to damage rolls and have a x3 crit multiplier...yeah...and I drain cha and paralyze enemies, and the save for my paralyzing gaze is cha based...and I can heal 1d8 + cha HP as a swift action, and deal the same amount of damage to undead...and I add cha to all my saves.

o_O I never actually made such a powerful char without actually realizing it (then again, I only ever made 2 chars that were really powerful, the rest was just mostly monks, so yeah...)

Interesting topic of note-

Your DM is a complete idiot. He obviously didn't even bother to look up a visilight and its capabilities.

With just a casual view of the MMIII Visilight section, I notice this:
Level Adjustment: -

That means that this type of monster is NOT designed for nor should be EVER used as a playable race by any person.

This guy should have his dice and DM screen stolen and burned as a sacrifice to Gygax.

One player was an imp warmage. He had several powerful spell like abilities, plus warmage levels and he dealt a lot of damage basically. His fly speed was insane so he rarely got killed. Also, I don't know if this is legal or anything, but every time he dies, his soul is transported to the abyss, where he is revived, and sent back by his master close to the place of his death. The guy is basically immortal, or so the DM says.

Another player played a creature similar to a bodak. Basically, every time he kills someone, he creates a spawn. The guy can basically have an entire battalion at his command. Plus, he also possesses wizard levels, thus has a pretty sick selection of spells to choose from.

My brother was playing an assassin/ninja/some PRc (not sure which) that basically drains levels with each hit. For each drained level, he gets +1 to damage and attack rolls, and his damage/AR can become insanely high. Also his level drains grant him other abilities which are also powerful. He also has a high INT and can use death attack from the assassin class effectively and kill people in one hit. He has successfully done so several times, as far as I know. Not to mention that his level draining kills people easily.

It's interesting how he feels it's okay to give one character an immortal failsafe, another hordes of controlled followers, and he flipped out on you.

Still going with my judgement that this guy is a moron and a tool.

If I were you I'd not want to play with him anymore, because it seems that he just has a chip on his shoulder about something. You must have said something crosswise that he didn't like, or he has out of game beef with you.

Maybe he should stick to being a referee for checkers tournaments, because DMing isn't his strong suit.

Well who knows, maybe he doesn't like me for some reason. Although I really wouldn't know what that reason is. If I ask him he probably won't tell me :P

I won't be attending his campaigns anyway since he said he doesn't want me to game with them anyway. So I can't play even if I wanted to. Not that I want to after the stunt he pulled...

I guess it's time to find a new gaming group then. I've only ever played with this group, so finding another one that suits me will be really hard. Especially so because I don't like it when people smoke at the table (I mean seriously, it stinks...and I like to breathe air thank you very much). I got nothing against smokers, I like those who have the decency not to smoke at the gaming table, because it's kinda inconsiderate to bother others like that and not caring about it.

And I don't wanna see them drink alcohol either, things like these have no place at the gaming table.

Maybe I should settle for gaming over the internet with a group of regulars or something. Never done it before, so it could be pretty fun.

I'm not the type to just say "go find another gaming group" because I know how hard that is to do, and I don't like to perpetuate the view of DND players as antisocial.

I hope you the best of luck, but you may be right, it may be in your best interest to find some people online or maybe around town.

Nah...I have the feeling that all has been said and done. The DM said clearly he does not want me in the campaign or gaming with them again. I tried discussing it with him, but he refused to discuss, and kicked me. I'm not really keen to play with him again either, there are better DMs around, even if they are on the internet.

Thanks, I'll need a lot of luck if I am to find a new gaming group in town. If I choose to play over the internet it'll be easier. It's got advantages, like the DM can't rip your sheet to shreds LOL

I'm not really bothered by the whole thing. The fact he said I'm not cut out for RPGs doesn't really bother me, because I know I am, which is why I haven't replied anything to him at all. I know where I'm at so I have no need to defend myself against his insults.

He's a good DM most of the time actually and I enjoyed most of his campaigns, but this time he overdid it, and I have no idea what got into him. I say good riddance tbh, no one needs that kind of behavior. Though to his defense, he did apologize for the sheet (although the sheet is not the problem, but rather his behavior).

Hey, could you tell me more about FLGS? What does it stand for and what is it actually? So far I haven't really heard of it, I'd appreciate some additional info.

Thanks a lot for your suggestion

Friendly Local Game Store.

Good luck finding a new gaming group, if all else fails maybe you could try the RP servers of a MMORPG like world of warcraft. But the quality and quantity of roleplaying is abysmal compared to what you get at a game table with friends.

Ah yes, I see I know only one gaming store, I'll probably have some luck there, I've been there many times, and have seen people playing D&D every once in a while.

As far a world of warcraft goes...meh, played it for 2.5 years, then I got bored. I have seen some good free to play MMORPGs though, so who knows what I'll pick up.

Thanks a lot for your advice, I'll be trying that out

Edit: BTW there's a new free to play MMORPG, they say it's the best, or one of the best on the net. It's based on medieval fantasy as far as I have gathered. I looked it up like a month ago or so, but forgot the name. Anyone know? If not, no worries I'll find it lol

Edit 2: I found it, it's called requiem Bloodymare, and it looks good.

The show he pulled on me in front of my friends is simply not acceptable in my eyes. You don't behave like that to a person, especially not in front of said person's friends. I remember having been really angry at some of them several times, but I have never done anything like that to them. You just don't do that to a friend.

Exactly.

Good luck. Try OpenRPG chat online or something, maybe.

Not a lot of games out there are evil, because it basically devolves into everyone hung / Executed, or a big inter party kill fest for loot. Typically.

Yep, I'll try that.

I'm not really into MMo anymore, played WoW for 2.5 years and that was that. I tried warhammer online for a month or so, but then stopped playing. I'm just not into MMOs anymore.

Thanks for the advice I'll give it all a try.

In my experience, almost every evil game ends up like that, and it kinda bothers me that they still haven't learned this.

Additionally, I must say I feel sorry for our DM. He puts a lot of effort into his campaigns just to have them ruined because the players think that evil = I can do whatever I want, because I am evil. It's sad to see a decent campaign being ruined, when you consider we could have played good or neutral characters, which would have been way more fun because the campaign would not end as fast, and we'd actually get somewhere.

I actually can't remember when was the last time I had a char over lv 10...mostly because at least one of them needs to be evil and naturally do something stupid and disrupt the campaign...whereas if we had played good/neutral chars, we would have gotten further.

If you like MMORPG's, there is a game called Dungeons & Dragons Online: Stormreach published by Turbine. It's only about $15/month tops.

You can find it at www.ddo.com.

I am a long-time player of this game, set in the Eberron campaign setting. It's got all kinds of people playing, from hard core roleplayers to powergamers. As tends to be the case for MMO's, it's dominated by the PG's.

It's definitely not as intricate or open-ended as PnP, but I have a good time with great people all over the world while playing.

If you join up, be sure to look up Aspenor on the game forums. I am somewhat of a celebrity. :D

True enough, my players are funny in a way.
Whenever we play a normal campain, most of the time atleast one of them will want to be evil. I'll allow it and he will do a excellent job at it.
But whenever I have stated that we are playing an evil campain and everyone is evil...They all revert to chaotic stupid baby-eating-and-town-burning-for-fun behaviour.
It's like they cant take their evil PC's seriously unless there are other good PC's as contrast.

You're pretty much right there, every story has 2 sides.

Btw, my brother and one of the friends agreed with the ban, the third friend was silent. I pretty much didn't have anyone on my side. Plus it's not about picking sides anyway. This is between me and the DM and it will be settled between me and the DM.

Also, I don't wanna put my friends in the position where they have to choose to side with me or the DM, this is something you can't do to your friends, you can't make them choose between one friend and another friend. This kind of situation is seriously bad for them, as it makes them choose sides, and both me and the DM are are their friends. This is the reason this must stay between me and the DM. I would be a really bad friend if I put my friends into this kind of a position.

Did you ask your brother why he agreed with the DM?

He had the same reasons as the DM, he thinks I didn't role play it properly. He said that proper role play from my side would have been to just run out of the room and that's that.

From my perspective it was bad for several reasons:

1 - I did not know who was fighting who, but their attention was not on me, so I decided to make use of the confusion and drain cha off of one of the enemies because he was cowering
2 - It would have made little sense to run from a role play perspective because I just broke out of what looked like a jail or something. I figured that if it was a jail (which it was), I wouldn't be able to get out so easily anyway, so might as well try to survive by draining cha to make myself stronger.
3 - Even if I did wanna run away, I had no knowledge of what awaits me outside. And considering that, it was a better option to make use of the current situation (which suited me), rather than running away from the fight, and into an even worse situation.

Perhaps the woman was a DMPC and you screwed up his plans for her?

Proper role play to run away? In his opinion maybe. And then what, now you have escaped and ran away. You aren't part of the party at this point and probably never would be since, if you ran, you'd probably want to get as much distance between you and the prison as possible.

I hope you find a group that works for you.

Yeah, that DM is a jerk. First a DM shouldn't decide how a character should be role-played unless it goes in a completely opposite direction of previous actions(like a bloodthirsty warrior suddenly chickening out), but since your character was brand new that wouldn't do.

And your DM is an absolute moron:
PCs got a bit murderous and killed someone with important information? I have just the thing for you! Its called Speak with Dead. That could have made an interesting session "hey guys now you have to curb your murderous tendencies for a few minutes so this priest can call up the spirit of someone with information that you murdered.

Ask your brother to tell the DM he needs to look up that spell and either get over whatever he has against you or man up and say it to your face.

I've had some bad DMs.

One asked me specifically to build a rogue. He knows that is my forte. So, first game, the party wakes up w/o any belongings in the middle of a dungeon. After a dozen rolls I finally break us out of the cell (I was suspicious at this point), we find some mundane equiptment (we are level 8) and get outside. And find we are surrounded by a hoard of zombies. Some time after that fight, a fight where my 1d6 short sword did next-to-nothing, we get to a hallway. I find a trap, attempt to disarm it, roll a 20 for a 36. And fail. The trap goes off, almost killing me. End of the hallway we find a pair of golems. I look at the DM and go "I take out my sword and sit on the blade". He turns to me and asks me why. I tell him "If my character is going to get f*****, I'm going to be the one doing it". Last time we played with that guy.

Some times you have a DM who cannot allow the bad stuff of his life to remain separate from his group. Yeah, sometimes you just aren't up to DMing, so you shouldn't. Other times, a DM has too much of a DM-vs-PC mentality. Also a bad idea. Some DMs would just be better suited to telling the PCs what their characters are doing, this way there are no arguments when the PC tries something contrairy to the DM railroading their character.

But your DM seems like an awful piece of junk. If things went they way you said (and I doubt anyone lying would try to defend an evil character the way you did), your (ex)DM is a (insert favorite string of curse words). And you can tell him this is coming from some who has never played or sided with an evil, or even semi evil, character over 13 years.

P.S. - nice roleplaying. I believe you played it right, and wouldn't mind DMing your evil character in my group. Not a compliment I hand out lightly.

Yeah I know it's kind of ridiculous that he thinks he can tell me what proper role play is, when he doesn't really know my character at all. I believe at this point I am about the only one who can make a proper role play decision.

Lol yeah, I guess I should ask the group that. We don't wanna spoil everyone's fun again, do we

Yeah that's true we could have used speak with dead to get the information. My character had around +30 on intimidate, and over +20 on diplomacy. I even offered twice to have a conversation with the woman and get the info, and the player who played the imp rudely told me to bugger off (OOC), while torturing her. All the while it was obvious from many failed torture attempts that torture would not get us the info. I wanted to try with intimidate and diplomacy, because I know I would have succeeded (both skills were over +20, with intimidate being around +30). I also told him this and the guy didn't wanna let me near the woman...

I think I'll do just that. I don't like another person playing mailman and delivering messages from me to someone or vice versa, so I'll try to talk to dm personally, if possible.

Lol that DM sure is something...a roll of 36 couldn't disarm a trap? A roll like that could disarm almost any trap, especially if we're talking level 8 characters. Terrible...Looks like we all had a fair share of bad DMs. But heck with 13 years of experience (or more) you were bound to run into one. Everyone did and will at some point.

Thank you for the kind words about my role playing, I'm honored Though I wish I had never played that session because I knew how it would end. It almost always does with evil chars in campaigns.

I think I can say with all doubt cast aside that your DM is... well... a bad DM.

At that point I would have told him to go $^#& himself and taken my share of the food I had pitched in for (should that be the case) and walked out. There is no excuse for that kind of behavior at a game table. On ONE session? Are you kidding me? I'm sorry you've had this bad experience with the game and I hope you continue to play, but you should find another DM to game with.

Even if he is your friend, that just isn't acceptable. He doesn't know how to improvise and apparently doesn't know how to DM himself if an info giving NPC gets killed off. What a jerk.

NEVER touch someones character sheet without permission, and never by any means destroy it. You lose players that way, even friends.

I actually brought a lot of food to the session. I also payed around 15$ for a new battle grid, which I had to customize with my brother for our needs. The battle grid was just an empty board. It's the kind they use at schools, but I had to use a special kind of spray to make very thin lines on it so they would not get erased.

The point of the battle grid was that we draw dungeons and other stuff instead of using tokens to mark them. Battles went pretty fast on that grid and we were able to mark auras, spell effects. And I also didn't make a battle grid out of the entire board, but left a part of the board untouched so we can write initiative orders on it, mark buffs and debuffs etc etc.

Basically we could write, draw and erase as much as we wanted, it was really great because it went quite fast.

Not only that, but I was the one who had to carry the board all the way home (it was a long trip just to get to the shop that sold the boards), after which it took me and my brother around 4 days to get it ready for the session.

So yeah...after paying around 15$ for the whole thing, traveling over 2 hours from my house to the shop and back, spending 4 days of work with my brother to get the grid ready for the session, and bringing a lot of food to the session as well, the DM kicks me from the group in such a rude way...

But don't get me wrong, it's not about the battle grid, or about the money and time invested in it, or about the food. It's simply about the behavior he demonstrated when he kicked me...I can't remember the last time I was so humiliated in front of my friends.

Yep, he acted like a jerk I guess. I guess no matter how good a friend seems to be it always turns out you gotta watch your back. Ironically, his favorite D&D classes are "backstabber" type classes (rogues and such, stealth classes basically) lol. That's the funny part about this whole thing.

Find a better group. Evil campaigns seldom work out.

Yeah I noticed lol.

First of all let me just say that sounds like an awesome character and I believe I'll be using a toned down version as my next boss fight. It sounds like you were in the right, even killing the npc isn't that out there since you waited through a failed interrogation, no need to have someone alive to give information to whoever imprisoned you in the first place.

You had a terrible dm, it happens, not everyone is made to dm and it sounds like he has a childish attitude to top it all off. My personal advice would be to try and remedy things however, if you're good friends with the group and this is the first time he's been such a douche it might be safe to assume that he was just blowing off some steam on you and is just too prideful/childish/whatever to admit to his mistakes. I'd suggest offering to dm a session, if you really don't want your ex dm there, then just do it with the other players...make break them out of their habit of playing chaotic stupid.

As for evil campaigns...with people who play evil like that they aren't going to work. If you know your pcs can do it, then they can end up being an incredibly fun campaign. My best campaign was one that ended up turning into an evil campaign with the good pcs slowly shifting to evil after a bunch of manipulation and what have you. It worked really well, nobody metagamed, nobody got mad if their pcs fought and it ended up being our longest lasting campaign to date...they actually almost ended up getting to epic levels before it ended.

I've only done two online campaigns before but both were very enjoyable though unfortunately ended up getting cut short as we all had difficult schedules to work around. I've often thought about attempting something similar again if there are still 3.5 groups floating around. If you're ever in the Connecticut area and want a group to play with, feel free to send me a pm or something...we're always on the lookout for new blood.

Well I am glad my character had some use, if it did inspire you to make a villain out of it Thanks.

I know evil campaigns can end up being really good, as a matter of fact I have been itching to play an evil character the last few months, and I was more interested in the role play part of that char than the combat part. I wanted to play an evil character and really bring out his personality (although this particular char was not the one I wanted to play) and all. But with my friends playing evil the way they do I don't think I can do it lol.

I live in croatia, in zagreb, so sadly, I am nowhere near Conneticut Thank you for the invitation though, it's good to know I'm the kind of player people would like to have at a session. Online campaigns sound like fun, so maybe I'll be giving it a shot sometime.

Sometimes you don't get along with people. For good reasons of no reasons at all. At times your circle of friends need to change. If the situation played out as the op stated i think his brother will find that sort of behaviour just repeats itself and he won't be inclined to be part of that group either.

Whats done is done now. But, you might want to reexamine what happened in a month or so. Often one looks at a situation through the lens that favours themself and don't realize that the situation is not quite so one sided. A little bit of time will cool the emotions and allow for a bit impartiallity that maybe you can learn something for yourself.

The only reason i say this is because it does seem awfully one sided, but heck there is a king of the douche bags and you might have met his emminence.

As far as ripping up character sheets that is well.....above and beyond. Destroy my stuff expect the same treatment. I wouldn't have anything to do with him unless i got a full apology in front of everyone who was present.

Well I try to re-examine the situation every few days, and I still can't see what I did wrong. I'll keep trying though.

Hmmm eye for an eye huh? Not really smart but that's just me. When someone is an idiot and does something stupid to you, you shouldn't do the same back. At this point you're just on his level.

You know what they say about idiots, don't go down to their level, they will beat you with experience. Your course of action should be your own IMO, and not influenced by others. One needs to do what they deem is correct to do, and not merely mimic the actions of others.

You see, being vengeful means being stupid, predictable, and controllable. If you do to them as they do to you, they can control your actions by simply doing to you whatever it is that they want you to do. It also makes you predictable for the same reason. And it's also stupid for the 2 reasons mentioned above. A person who is vengeful is one who is easy to control. Control your temper friend. Now that's a lesson I learned from martial arts

Besides what was I supposed to rip up, he didn't have a char sheet lol. Not that I would rip it up anyway. I'm not like that, I've never taken other people's stuff and destroyed it, it's disrespectful.

Just wow. I read your post and read quite a bit of the replies.

You should really try to DM a separate group on alternate days so you can enjoy DnD with your real friends.

I have had some differences with members in my group but we always seem to get past it and game on, afterall we've gamed since junior high together. So a good 7years or so. honestly I would be too lazy to find a new group and would quit DnD but that's just me. Sometimes a break from the game is always good.

I wouldn't want to play with that guy again either, considering the way he treated you. Honestly if he was doing that to me, even if he was my friend I would flip out right back at him and tell him his faults as a DM THAT NIGHT. Most people already mentioned it but you role played the character just fine, albeit the harming of other PC's wasn't good, it just wasn't avoidable though haha.

Since you did say you're the quiet type I am going to assume you might have trouble voicing yourself properly under certain situations. Some people can be intimidated easily, but don't let a coercive power trip DM take the fun out of gaming. If the DM and 2 players agree not to have you there anymore, have the players that disagree with that action boycott their sessions for a while. You should talk to all the others and have them convince the DM he was very inappropriate in his conduct.

After all who's fault is it really that the DM didn't have a fallback plan for the VITAL information. PC's do random things all the time, and I would have killed the informant before the torture even began lol.

but yeah evil campaigns are a gong show. The one I was playing in our party is split in two but we still adventure together. We make sure to keep a weary eye on the opposition though :P. My bard isn't evil so he kinda tries to use his diplomatic abilities to persuade them to do things his way. I think it's a unique character given the circumstances :P

*Edit*

I totally agree with angelus. You need to do something instead of letting it slide. Like I said, I would have given him **** that same night instead of waiting a day or two to let it cool down. If you let someone push you around the first time around, they are going to find it easy to do it again since you just avoid it. Avoidance is only useful in the most dire circumstances when you won't achieve anything. But in this case you get to show them you aren't some punk *****. Plus your older then them, round house kick the DM or something, for real. Grow a set as stated before and get 'er done.

Simple fact. Some DMs do not like PCs killing PCs.
Not really true for my group (except for when I DM). It is almost encouraged to kill PCs. But that another story.
It seems to me that the DM does indeed not like PC killing, and took your actions as such, even if they were unintentional. Honestly, this is almost expected to happen in Evil Campaigns in some form or another. The other PCs attacked your character (if I remember reading correctly), which was more then a justification to retaliate. Of course you did not kill the others intentionally, but you could have if you wanted to. It was a accident. Your DM is most certainly in the wrong.
The only thing I think you did wrong was chose a spell which could harm another player. Not familiar with the spell, but with a undead in the party, it would have been highly suggested to have learned a non AoE cure spell instead. But this is of only little importance. Your character is your character, and in a Evil game especially, should suit your character.

What would Mr. T say?

The matter was settled immediately the same day after the session ended. There's no reason anymore to use the time I post here to resolve the matter. As said, it's resolved.

The DM told me he would fancy it if I didn't play with them anymore, and I just said ok.

As for the battle grid, both me and my brother paid and made it it wasn't just me. Besides, I have 2-3 other friends who play this DMs campaign, and I'll leave the battle grid for them to use, for their sake because it makes it easier for them to game. After all the battle would have little use here with me, and no one using it. The fact is, we did pay a significant amount of time and money to make the battle grid and I certainly wouldn't like to see it unused just because its gathering dust somewhere in my closet or something.

As for standing up to my DM, that isn't really a problem...I told the DM I did nothing wrong. He disagreed and kicked, telling me he doesn't want me there. The mater is settled. It's his campaign and therefor his rules. I did stand up to him. I told him I was mostly in the right here and he's wrong, to which he replied I am kicked from the campaign etc.

I totally agree with angelus. You need to do something instead of letting it slide. Like I said, I would have given him **** that same night instead of waiting a day or two to let it cool down. If you mean physical confrontation, it's not really a problem. While the DM is best described as the typical 98-pound-physically-weak-but-intelligent individual, I on the other hand, have much over 10 years of training behind me, which includes muay thai, tae kwon do, boxing, and gym training in the form of olympic lifting and other main lifts (deadlift, bench, rows, squats).

So yeah...if I wanted to snap my DM in half, quite frankly it wouldn't be a problem. I am usually quiet that's true, but it doesn't mean I don't stand up to a**holes. I stood up to him. Told him he was wrong, he kicked me, that was that.

Then again, I think I'll take your advice and talk to the DM again. No violence though :P And I'll do it in person when I get the chance, because I don't like text messages, it's like the internet. You got the guts to say anything because there's no fear of retaliation.

While I like being quiet, it's not a sign of weakness you know The two of you are mistaken if you think I can't stand up for myself just because I am quiet.

You know the saying, "calm before the storm"? Well friend, that's who I am. We'll see what I can do with the DM. I got no idea when the next session is, but I'll hop over and talk to him, this time more aggressively, if there is need for it.

I've had the situation where a character sheet was ripped up at the table happen once. The DM had collected our character sheets the previous week and gave them back that game, I asked him why he had made a number of cosmetic changes to my character; he had changed my trench coat wearing bad ass to a spandex unitard wearing pansy (something I had specifically laughed at as ridiculous last game). He got ****** and ripped up my sheet (of course he had been ****** at me for being willing to wound people, but not kill them in earlier games).

However in that particular game he was the one that got fired and the rest of the players quit.

From what you originally posted he stated that he was sick and tired of your **** which means he may have a problem with previous actions in other games, possibly including harming other players. I have played in games where's it's funny to beat up innocent villagers, but a big no no to harm another PC which could be another issue so that could have been an issue ;did you notice if any other players caused collateral damage to each other? Powergaming so that your better than the other players can also be an issue in some gaming groups.

--
As a point of note I think he was making your character way more powerful than it really is.

1. The Gaze attack causes paralysis which makes the target helpless, so you could -coup de grace- as a full round action to cause an automatic crit (and cause a save vs death), but normal attacks don't

2. Visilights a "Always LN" from the plane of mechanus typically, so while cruel they are incapable of being truly evil (unless you play in Eberron ;) ).

3. Charisma damage can't normally kill someone, unless the ability specifically states otherwise only Con damage can kill someone (eg. shadows are an exception killing people that hit 0 str). Causing someone to hit 0 Cha puts them in a coma until they heal at least one point (which she would automatically get after one nights rest). However I'm sure it would suck to be on the receiving end of that ability, making it no worse than torturing her.

3. The Charisma drain only works on creatures you have grappled, which means you're unlikely to do it against anything very tough, or with a decent amount of strength unless they were paralyzed first, in which you could coup de grace them if you just wanted them dead.

4. Regarding the imp being immune to death, that's partially true, a summoned outsider can never be killed in a different plane. This is because that's not their body, it's their soul having generated random junk that looks like one, and once the vessel is destroyed the soul goes back to where it belongs. This is true of all outsiders and elementals as well (who typically make bodies out of the local rock) and would include you as well. However if an outsider physically goes to another plane (such as through a gate) then gets killed it stays dead, and is even unable to be raised from the dead unless it goes back to it's home plane first (or 9th level spells are involved). If your buddy is being sent to earth by a demon it sounds like he is physically in the prime material and therefore fully capable of permanently dieing.

I mention these rules not because it will fix the situation, but to point out that misinterpreting a number of rules can screw up a game pretty well; like making one person immortal and another persons non-lethal ability a super attack, making these things seem much more overpowered than they actually are.

@ The OP: What is divine purification? Is it a feat or a spell? What book is it in? I'm curious, well, mainly because it sounds cool. Thanks!

Also, it seems you were in the right from your story, but it also seems like there is more to the story based upon the reactions of the other players (moreso than the DM). I will say though, that it is NEVER called for for a character sheet to be ripped up. How immature.

@ Cromag:

Well, first, it seems as though rules here have very little, if nothing to do with anyone's objection (apart from the fact that the guy was Cha draining, not IF he could, but that the OP chose to).

But regardless, your points:

1. Agreed.

2. And celestials are "always good"...except for the fallen ones (the plot ones or the PC's). No reason that he couldn't have a LE guy.

3. True, but the paralysis ability specifically says that Visilights use their cha drain on paralyzed guys, so the OP was roleplaying appropriately in doing what he did.

4. Yes, that's true, but then the soul is barred from the Prime for (I can't remember...it's either 1 year or 100 years). In effect, that would amount to a player death..not uber reset.

In all, it seems as though this group is not very rule-wedded...they interpret the rules well enough, but bend them for story, which is fine. It actually sounds like an interesting group of characters....it's too bad they're chaotic stupid (OP excluded...probably) and acted immature in this session. I know I'd be tempted to game with them, but might have to reconsider (as the OP has).

Aber, I posted more than just rules nitpicks
-He mentioned that the DM had a problem with a string of occurrences for one (for one).
-Also you missed the most important of the rules I posted

3. Charisma damage can't normally kill someone, unless the ability specifically states otherwise only Con damage can kill someone (eg. shadows are an exception killing people that hit 0 str). It means the NPC character wasn't dead, just knocked out. Unless he specifically chose to kill her after draining her of course. Considering that was what finished up the game it tends to make a difference.

Very true, and I agreed with your other points. I should have mentioned that. I was only addressing the rules nitpicks, which you did specifically state were nitpicky.

Also you are right about the Cha drain not killing and the fact that the NPC wasn't dead (unless he also coup de graced that guy).

I was addressing the other, earlier stuff that the DM seemed to have problems with (primarily).

I'm still curious about that divine purification, though.

I have never really powergamed. I've only ever had 3 characters that were quite good at what they do but in no way overpowered. The 1st was an unoptimized spellsword, he was pretty strong naturally as he could fight good and cast wizard spells. Nothing special really, but a great cha. Second was a multiclass warblade/rogue/something (lol can't remember atm) who did quite a lot of damage but was close to death in almost every encounter. Third was this visilight here. Never intended him to be this powerful, but hey...

In short I don't like power gaming or hurting PCs (I have never attacked the PCs, that's a disaster waiting to happen). I do like strong characters, but not those who can break the game. I don't like spoiling games for other PCs by having my char kill everything in sight in a round or so...

I'll try get my DM to read this discussion, and let's see what he says to it, IF he wants to participate in the discussion.

We are playing a campaign in which we all must be evil.

Any time a DM dictates this reality, the game is broken before it begins.

There are 4 of us, and I am playing a Visilight (MM III), who can basically paralyze with a stare, and drain charisma. He is a paladin of tyranny 4, lawful evil.

That's uh... Wow. Do you have lightsabers too?

The first several sessions were done without me since I could not get an idea of what to play with, plus it was my first time as an evil character so I had some trouble with coming up with a character.

You're also probably not totally infatuated with that character or in love with the concept of it, which is why dictating such things is a self-inflicted auto-failure for any DM.

I'd like to know which orifice you stashed that in to get a greathammer inside the cell in the first place. This should be entertaining. Let me know.

After the battle was over, 2 of the PCs almost died, but we calmed down, and talked a bit. Since I am a visilight and cannot talk, I use sheets of paper and write in order to communicate. Another PCs does the same as he was stripped of his ability to talk.

Yeay, more hokey!

After quite some time of torturing the NPC (and getting no useful information at all), I decided to drain her charisma and just kill her off because I had gotten sick of waiting, it took too long...

You don't exist in a vacuum. I'd recommend consulting your teammates in the future before exercising capital punishment in such circumstances. In a moment of danger or perceived danger, that's different. But there was no rush or reason for alarm here.

The DM then stands up, takes my char sheet, and rips it into several pieces

Ah... Here's the problem. You're playing with five year-olds.

This thing is broken beyond broken. I'd bail. Find a real group. This isn't worth the hassle and is liable to taint your feelings for RPGs for a long time. Find a good group.

That's the best advice I can offer, and I believe it's the only advice a reasonable person would give.

Ket: I can't say if you're trolling or you're for real...

As far as the greathammer goes, heck...ask the DM. I chose my equipment as my DM told me too, and he said I appeared in there with all my equipment. It was not my idea to appear in a cell with all my equipment with me.

As for the woman NPC that was tortured, I already said it was a mistake to do so. To my defense, other players have done things 100 times worse than me, and didn't get treated nearly as bad as me. But I won't concern myself with past campaigns right now.

Oh and...taint my feelings for RPGs? I doubt that is possible :P

Ket: I can't say if you're trolling or you're for real...

Nah. I'm for real, not trolling. Games that get too hokey though usually have other traits to them as well, almost none of which are desirable. "Some" hokey is cool. There's a difference between a "touch of spice" and "I'm an attention ...hooker" however. It seems like your scenario was unique beyond the realm of reason to begin with. Perhaps wrongly, I associate overly "weird" campaigns with bad players and DMs.

It wasn't meant as a troll, it's just that in my experience when this degree of weirdness is present the group usually fails (just because they share common traits, not because one is related to the other) so I wasn't really surprised by much you said as your story progressed.

So no. Not trolling. Critiquing your DM and your group, for sure. But trolling? No. I sympathize with you, that's why I encouraged you to find another group ASAP.

Honestly, imo Savage species/the concept of playing something that's required to have an ecl is just a poor idea, to be fair I've never actually run one, but we almost played one...before I realized how crazy and broken it was.

Your DM is lucky he was playing with you and not me, I would have showed him what a critical hit actually feels like.

Kicking you out of his game is obviously his choice regardless of how huge a wanker he is being. But to disrespect someone by taking their property and destroying it in front of them is just begging for an old fashioned beat down.

Sounds like he had a problem more with your PC that you rolled then the choices you made in battle/game. What were the guide lines for the PCs your group were supposed use? Does your group/you Opt or Powergame? The DM could have gotten mad at the fact that your's was more powerful then the other PC?

Yes, I see.

What can you do I guess, those things happen. It was an evil campaign, something along those lines was bound to happen, I just didn't think it would be that bad.

Well if I opt to find another group, let's pray I get lucky

Your DM is lucky he was playing with you and not me, I would have showed him what a critical hit actually feels like.

Kicking you out of his game is obviously his choice regardless of how huge a wanker he is being. But to disrespect someone by taking their property and destroying it in front of them is just begging for an old fashioned beat down.

Beating someone up is something I'd do only in self defense if you ask me. I don't beat people up for acting like idiots. The burden of their behavior is on their back, not mine. It's them who have to deal with it, I can easily ignore it.

Sounds like he had a problem more with your PC that you rolled then the choices you made in battle/game. What were the guide lines for the PCs your group were supposed use? Does your group/you Opt or Powergame? The DM could have gotten mad at the fact that your's was more powerful then the other PC?

I usually don't powergame. I don't even like it. I do like it when my characters are powerful but not to the point where I break the game. And as I said, I never played a char so powerful he broke the game.

As for me being more powerful then the other PCs - how do you get more powerful than someone who can't be killed? We actually had an "immortal" PC, an imp warmage. Yes it was legit and by the rules but still...I could have killed the guy 10 times over, it would have brought me nothing...

Regardless of what actually transpired, reaching over and taking [what I hope was your OWN] character sheets is going beyond social conduct and manners. He touched YOUR possession, and violated it. That's an insult and injury. I too studied martial arts (dad was a tae kwon do/kungfu-wushu teacher), and I would not have allowed such disrespect. I would have broken the offending ... appendages.

I'm 22 years old and I know what respect and discipline is. And that's only something martial arts have taught me. I have never taken someone else's possessions and behaved that way and destroyed it, to me such behavior is not acceptable.

Forget it friend...young people today are not taught respect, discipline and manner. There is rarely such a thing today as a young person with those traits. Many years of martial arts have forged me into a human being who can look at himself in the mirror and be proud. I am proud about everything about myself, and the way I am, and who I have become.

Respect, discipline, and good manners are not something you will see often these days. I know what I am talking about because I work at a gas station, and you would not believe how the majority of people (even much older people) have zero discipline and respect.

Almost no one ever hands me money from hand to hand. They just throw it in front of me. Most people don't close the door properly when walking out. They throw garbage in front of the station even though there are 2 containers for garbage, and 3 trash cans. When they drop some merchandise they leave it on the floor - yes it's my job to keep it tidy, but how can you drop something and leave it there? I could never do that, no matter where I am. So many people just slam the door when leaving instead of closing it normally. Yes, the literally SLAM it. Don't know what's up with that. One night shift, a guy slammed the door so hard it broke. He didn't even care, he just left, and the door could not be closed anymore. When they put the merchandise in front of me to scan it, they throw it in front of me, just like with money. Over 95% of men will throw it at you. Yes I say men, because women are WAAAAY better manned than men. I have yet to meet a female customer who will do any of the above.

No to mention the bunch of guys I had last night shift. Had to close the store because it was time for me to end my shift, count the money, put it in the safe, computer work etc etc. One of them kept slamming on the door several times even though I explained to him I can't sell anything at the moment because I have to complete the shift.

When I was done I gave them the merchandise and all was well until I went outside and saw how they spat in front of the entrance (seriously, who teaches their kids to spit on the street...for the love of God), not to mention the trash they threw there, and the ice cream they stole and stuck it to the wall.

I never noticed because I was bus completing my shift, but I got pretty angry, decided to watch out for that from now on and break some heads if they do it again.

So yeah, as you can see my friend...discipline, respect...good manners. No, you won't find them today, except with women. Don't hope to see it in the people of today, because there is very little no none of any three in most.

Thankfully, I am not like that, and I am not saying this just because of myself, but because of others around me. I hope you are a martial arts practitioner as well, because regardless of whether you'll have a teacher who will teach you competitive crap instead of real fighting, or a teacher who will teach you real fighting, you will be taught respect and discipline both ways - the good manners you must acquire yourself.

Respect and honor friend

No worries, I know I can't say my char was game breaking ir too powerful...other chars were about as powerful as him, if not even more powerful, like the imp warmage.

The power of my char could have been the cause for his behavior, but I can't see why, if others are more powerful than me, or just as powerful.

Sorry for the thread hijack...but again, I'm curious. I asked this earlier, but the thread was really busy at that time.

If you don't mind, TheMonk, what is "divine purification"? Is it a visilight ability, a feat, a spell, or what? It sounds fun!

Sorry to hear that your group was less than fun, but here's hoping you'll find a better one (or you can always DM one and introduce new players).

Ooops, I'm really sorry about that I just remembered that you asked this. I'm sorry I didn't reply, there were a lot of posts I had to reply to and I missed some. I apologize that you had to ask this twice.

Sacred purification (this is the actual name of the feat) is a feat from Player's Handbook II. It basically allows you to expend a turn/rebuke undead attempt to heal everyone within a 60 feet radius around you for 1d8 + cha or do the same amount of damage to undead at the same time, as a swift action. So basically it's an AoE heal that is used as a swift action and is cha based.

Sorry you had to wait so long for the reply.

This is entirely the DM's fault. If the player did anything wrong, it was joining a group with him as the DM.

I don't mean to go offtopic, but earlier in this thread you talked about age of DMs. I DMed my first adventure when I was 10 with a group of 14 year olds. Suprisingly, they really liked the adventure and didn't want to take a break from the game. I have no idea how I pulled it, since I planned the entire adventure all in one night.

Haha, it's a good quality, don't worry. I am a bad DM tbh...my last campaign ended on the first session lol. Deus ex machina for the win...

Then again that campaign was like years ago. I was terrible then, but I do believe I could do MUCH better if I were to make one now. I know way more about DM-ing today than I knew at that time. Plus that was my first campaign (and last) ever, so what can you expect...and I was relatively new to D&D as well...

"How would you like it if I destroyed something of yours? Should I go straight home or let the air out of your tires on the way out?"

I just went home.
