1. HP is how much damage you can take during a battle assuming you fight often as you level up, you character gains fighting 'knowlwdge' it's this that keeps him from bleeding to death when he gets hit. when you level up you apply this 'knowledge' to your fighting technique therefore increasing your chance of survival. You can find HD (hitpoint dice) on the 22nd page of the PHB (players handbook)

2,3 and 4. A modifier is something that takes your abilities (stregnth, dexterity, etc.) and applies it to your skills. i.e. if you're a very strong character, you get a big modifier when you're climbing or swimming. After a while, if your character ages enough, your ability stats raise or lower. you can take these new ability stats and apply them to your skills. You can also find the modifier information in the PHB.

5. you can fingd speed in the 'Races' chapter of the PHB. every race has it's own unique speed. how much you carry can also affects your speed.

Sorry if this is out of order but

1) By speed I assume you mean the movement speed of something walking (or flying, digging, swimming, etc.). It should say the speed of the creature, race, etc. right in the stat block.

2) HP is rolled for in one of several ways (as described in the player's handbook) and then you add your constitution bonus (AKA modifier) to it. Which leads to the next question

3) Well that depends. There are modifiers from your basic stats (str, dex, con, int, wis, cha) which effect your abilities in combat and certain skills, there is a modifier on your armor from shields, armor, magic items, etc. and several other modifiers that can be explained only with a through read through of the rules (see PHB and DMG).

4) Modifiers are rather complicated and should be explained by the official rules as mentioned above. If you mean a specific type of modifier such as to your AC (armor class) then please state so

You definitely have the right place, Amrith. Welcome to the game!

As noted above, all of your questions are answered in great detail in the Player's Handbook. This book - one of only three "Core Rule" books absolutely necessary to play D&D - contains roughly 100% of all the rules one needs to know as a player. The Dungeon Master - that is, the person "in charge" of the game - will find about 95% of what (s)he needs to know there as well.

If by chance you happen to be away from your Player's Handbook (or "PH" as it's commonly abbreviated), you may find the System Reference Documents to be a helpful resource. There are lots of versions around, but I like the hyperlinked version at www.d20srd.org the best. Give the Basics Section a read for a quick primer on modifiers of all sorts.

Feel free to post back with any additional questions!
