A great comparison for your character

Apr 18, 2009 21:34:04 So I'm sitting here watching one of my favorite movies, and it occurred to me that the main characters are a lot like heroes in D&D. So, if you're trying to bring new players in, give them this as a comparison:

Think of your character as either Harmonica, Cheyenne, or Frank in Once Upon A Time In The West (Sergio Leone, 1969).

Yeh, other movies could be applicable. But this one just struck me as being very much the kind of "We need a hero" kind of landscape that D&D takes place in. The characters are larger than life, the common people are mostly in the background, and the landscape is full of dangers only the heroes can sucessfully navigate.

Apr 19, 2009 22:21:44 Honestly, I can only think of my dragonborn paladin as a civilized version of Conan the Barbarian, I've been rereading several of the REH (not Sprague De Camp's crappy fan fiction) and I noticed that I've borrowed more than a few elements of Conan for this character. I inherently despise plagiarism to a large extent, and I've done a lot to make them two very seperate chars.

Honestly, I can only think of my dragonborn paladin as a civilized version of Conan the Barbarian, I've been rereading several of the REH (not Sprague De Camp's crappy fan fiction) and I noticed that I've borrowed more than a few elements of Conan for this character. I inherently despise plagiarism to a large extent, and I've done a lot to make them two very seperate chars.

Yeh, de Camp's version is monumentally crappy. Of course, most authors are compared to REH - he's my favorite author and probably will continue to be.

Apr 21, 2009 8:43:31 My favourite old PC - Arion - was Madmartigen from Willow. Not like - was. Everything was the same: look, attitude, womanizing, style, even the armor. If you ever wanted to imagine Arion all you needed do was picture Madmartigen and you were there.

Which was all quite annoying since Arion predated Willow by about 5 years.

Apr 21, 2009 15:02:34 You may find out, OPer, that maybe not many have seen your movie. The very last PC I ran was named "Drexy". She was one of the few female PCs I've played and what we were running was sort of a Mad Max type game. She was based off of Mad Max with the exception being that she had a home base, a junkyard.

Apr 23, 2009 13:41:23 My current paladin is one part Saber from Fate: Stay/Night, one part Agrias from FFTactics, and one part Obi-Wan Kenobi. :P
