hey, i am about to play a wizard in an epic level campaign. the only type of caster that i have ever played before has been a cleric (and i wasnt that good at it) and need some general advice.
what spells are the best? what about epic level spells? what equipment should i look at? prestige classes?

If you’ve never played a Wizard, epic level might not be the place to start. They are a high bookkeeping, high planning class, and they can be (Read: hard not to be) very broken at epic levels.

If you insist though, a simple Wizard 20+ provides all the power you will most likely want. Archmage is a popular Wizard Prc, and its abilities are fairly easy to implement. Try the Charop boards for mind numbingly powerful builds, and look up a few of the old “Best/favorite spell combination” threads for a crash course in linking spells together to make things cry.

Timestop for example, is your friend. Good luck!

yeah i know epic level is not the greatest place to start, but my buddy who is normally our caster is going to be this odd rogue type with a few prestige classes that pretty much make everyone flatfooted all the time. so someone had to step up and i have been complaining about always having to be our fighter, so this is the chance for me to step up

and thanks for the advice

my biggest concern is spells after 20th lvl, and also different magical items. we are going to be level 40 at least, and will be getting the standard gold amount

Your gang has an Epic Level Handbook, right? Youre going to need it. Considering you start out with enough power to vie with Gods, im thinking its going to be more of a “Sandbox” style campaign. They tend to be light on rules, and very fun if no one gets huffy. Downside: normal rules break down and weep, making most advice superfluous Upside: Elminster-on-a-stick and other very fun things. You get to go nuts.

If it is indeed one of those, you might want to focus less on PHENOMENAL COSMIC POWERS and more on your teeny tiny living space. Considering how fast the Wizardry power curve goes upwards, the challenge at 40+ might not be trying to dominate the world so much as decide what you want to do now that the world is chump change. Theres always a bigger fish, but at some point you have to switch ponds.

Id grab myself a copy of the Stronghold Builders Guidebook too. Every Omniwizard needs his own Demiplane fortress in which to be better then everyone else.

Gearwise, it depends on what youre going for. Raw damage output is less effective at high levels, but Int boosts are always nice. As are Metamagic rods, wondrous items, your own personal army of golems all of whom can end the universe with a single thought...honestly it gets hard to pick out single specific items when even the sky is no longer the limit.

Check around the Charop boards for what all the wickedly cool wizards wear, if you need to cover some bases. Constant immunity to things is good. Constant immunity to everything is better.

Invent a few items! Steal a few items from the Plethora of 1001 _ _ _ _ _ items threads, then claim you invented it. No need to settle for mere balance, you're playing in the epic epic levels. Balance died of old age a very long time ago, in that world, so we might as well enjoy a little dance on its grave.

Rod of Wonder? Psha. Pick your teeth with a Rod of Awesome.
On your demiplane.
While being better then everyone.

don't make gollumns, they are too expensive, make effigies. 50 elf effigies will make the perfect servants for your fortress. Also look into leadership and epic leadership. Have your Leadership granted loyal servants occupy your fortress as well and do the more intelligence requiring work, make sure to have some artificers for your magical maintenance.

Also at that high of level a litle bit of LA won't matter as much as some bonuses you can only get from race. Try a psuododragon.(sp?)

Also make shure to have your cosmic powers theme based. there is Cosmic Descryer, a good class for plane crossing.
Make sure to take the epic feat that stops you from dieing of old age.
also escew materials and all the meta feats, then take the automatic metamagic feats too
make sure to build for the locate city bomb. It always helps to clear away all the mooks and most of the terrain.
