3rd level gnome fighter (house rules, gnome is +2int -2str) 36 point buy
STR 12(4)
DEX 16(10)
CON 10(2)
INT 18(16)
WIS 10(2)
Cha 10(2)
after applying racial mods
STR 10
DEX 16
CON 10
INT 20
WIS 10
Cha 10

Now, min-maxing stats asside, craft is a class skill for fighters.

Craft (alchemy) 6 ranks
Int bonus +5
Skill focus (craft alchemy)+3
Racial bonus +2
Masterwork alchemy kit +4
+20 on all craft (alchemy) checks

My main question for the board is 1) do I have all my ducks in a row for bonuses?) 2)assuming an 8 hour march/ride for movement over the day, 8 hours rest, 8 hours sleep: Would those 8 hours of rest be enough time for alchemy checks for the week? 3) the PHB shows a weeks check results in silver pieces and a days is copper pieces, I was just checking to see if ther was some feats available to adjust the costs/time of crafting alchemy items?

Hate to break it for you but you must be a spellcaster to use alchemy.

Nope, you just need a caster level. Gnomes has racial spell-like abilities that grant a caster level.

You are mistaken.

To make an item using Craft (alchemy), you must have alchemical equipment and be a spellcaster. If you are working in a city, you can buy...

That said, I think it would be a reasonable houserule to count SLAs as making a gnome eligible for Alchemy. That seems to be the gnomish 'thing' in D&D, making stuff.

I personally would just go back to 3rd ed for this and say that anyone can do it. Dunno why they got rid of class-exclusive skills, then made one class-exclusive.

And for all of this, the actual questions got overlooked. Alright lets look at it again. Lets say for arguments sake cleric 1 fighter 2. Now please answer the questions?

You did ask if you had all your ducks in a row for bonuses, which the answer was a resounding no, because a +100 would not have allowed you to do what you wanted to do.

As for the change to a Spellcaster,

1) The Masterwork Alchemy Kit - Is this the Alchemy Lab in the PHB? If it is, this isn't something you just pick up and carry with you. It is a Lab afterall.

2) Assuming 8 hours "rest" time includes time to set up camp, break down camp, eat dinner/breakfast, deal with off camera activities and such, setting up a portable Lab and breaking it down, as well as Praying (a full hour of the rest time), I'd say no, it isn't enough time.

3) Unearthed Arcana included some alternate rules to Crafting which may be something for you and your DM to look into. It takes the Crafting element to an offcamera role, and allows for quick completion of a certain number of items/level.

while still a resounding no, at least it is a well thought out no explain where the no's are.

With those stats, I don't understand why your gnome chose the career of fighter. If not wizard, he'd make a fair rogue. I'd reduce dex and add con either way.

As for the spellcaster rule, if your DM is reasonable he should allow you to be an alchemist without being a wizard; especially being a gnome.

Wait a minute, why do we need magic to make sulfiric acid and matches and other non-magical stuff anyways? Caster levels make sense with things like Thunderstones and Sunrods, which at least defy physics enough to justify it, but a Tanglefoot Bag is just a glue solution in a sealed container.

On another note, could a psion use Alchemy by these rules? Manifesting is basically casting, right?

I don't believe anyone said it made sense why the rule in the PHB thats says "You must be a caster to create any of these items." All the Alchemy items fall into this category (Tanglefoot Bag, Smokestick, Antitoxin, Tinderwig, Alchemists Fire etc).

We did point out, that it is a rule though.

Alchemy in 3.0 did not have that rule attached to it. So when they revised it, in their infinite wisdom, WoTC decided to make it a limitation on the skill.

As for the Psion, I don't know it well enough to comment on it.

The alchemy subtext, IIRC (I've sold my 3e books and can't check) says 'you must be a spellcaster', which is not the same as 'you must have a caster/manifester level' or anything like that. It would boil down to a DM call, though, in the end. I, myself, would interpret it that a psion can't, because they don't qualify for prestige classes that say 'must cast spells' (by extension, neither would the Warlock).

Not that I've ever encountered a PC who wanted to craft anything, so I never had to really think about the issue.

Well, I don't think it's too long till the Adventurer's Vault or Tome of Treasures (whatever it's being called now) comes out for 4e. Well, September anyways.. not that long. So you'll have to wait, and I'm sure it will be something that anyone can learn with the right feats.. but.. wait.. Oh.. my mistake.. I thought this was the 4e forums *Looks around* Why yes it is.. But you're talking about previous versions of D&D, which have their own forums, no wonder I was confused..

Which was your first tip off, the Gnome bit or the fact the OP posted before Player Advice was a 4th Ed Forum?

We can't help that the Mods haven't moved a thread that was put into the correct area when it was started.
