| #1jimprofitMar 08, 2008 11:05:17 | I never immagined myself as one, I always did "power gaming" for the strict purpose of "not getting left behind". The idea of other characters making me look like a total douche just enraged me and I had to do something about it. Then the dice gods smile upon me with an oppurtunity, a n00b GM who doesn't know source matireal at all...:D And I'm a convincing liar. (We've established in rl I'm a gestalt rogue//bard XP) I've made a few epic feats "normal" feats so I could aquire them alot sooner, I'm playing a fighter//psychic warrior... DEVESTATING CRITICAL [Fighter bonus feat/General] Prerequisites Str 25, Cleave, Great Cleave, Improved Critical (chosen weapon), Overwhelming Critical (chosen weapon), Power Attack, Weapon Focus (chosen weapon). Benefit Effect: Whenever the character scores a critical hit with the chosen weapon, the target must make a Fortutude save (DC 10 + 1/2 character level + character’s Strength modifier) or die instantly. (Creatures immune to critical hits can’t be affected by this feat.) Special A character can gain this feat multiple times. Its effects do not stack. Each time a character takes the feat, it applies to a different type of weapon. Even if I fail to aquire the patience and calculations to pull that off (or the GM catches wind i'm trying to powergame grotestly) I can wait till 10th level. I'll soften the blow and emphasize things immune to criticals are exempt from it. (Undead, ooze, constructs...) GREAT STRENGTH: [General/Fighter bonus feat] Benefit: The character’s Strength increases by 1 point. Special A character can gain this feat multiple times. Its effects stack. I could aquire this feat at sixth level theoreticaly by using animal affinity to buff myself up to 25 strength and if the power is still "on" when I reach sixth level BAM! I cheated the system. (Chaotic to the core baby...) Even if I fail to calculate the right moment, or the GM involves himself and says "hey, this is too much like a videogame..." I can wait till tenth level. If done at sixth level yes, I'd have an unfair advantage against any living thing. If taken at tenth level, I may have an advantage, but a wizard could just control person me and it'd be like one of those old Superman comics where Supes is under mind control. Or hell, just cloudkill me. My con-score is only 10. (I needed the high stats for dex, str, and wis) Weapon Focus: Swords You heard me, not long sword, not bastard sword, swords, and all I had to do was make an 8-bit Theatre reference. I thought powergamer implied A) You work within the system. (And I'm chaotic alignment man. Systems are for chumps.) B) You do it to "win", I don't do it to win, I do it so other players don't try to be better then me. Look at them, with all their fancy books and repitore of D&D knowledge... I'm a poor working man just trying to getby!!! :P So really I think there needs to be a new achretype for guys like me. Cause If I was a powergamer, I'd hate the random d20 and would stress for a 2d10 bellcurve variant like in unearthed arcana. And I don't, because I like chaotic results!:D Ironicaly my character's alignment is lawful evil, though I'm sure that'll quickly change to chaotic evil. The GM might not be adept in how the mechanics work and where they come from, but he's not completely retarded. "Just cause you work for the government doesn't make you lawful..." My only fear is the GM is keeping a close-eye out for powergaming. He's banned some serious buisness spells like polymorph. But I bet with my high rl charisma score I can convince him that the reason these feats were invented was to give non-casters a fair leverage against casters... And would pointout the logical fallacies like control person and cloudkill as I did with you. It's the Superman theory. Superman is beloved and not feared at all like the X-Men or Spiderman. Why? Cause everybody and their mother knows his weaknesses... Universe man, universe man Size of the entire universe man Usually kind to smaller man Universe man Hes got a watch with a minute hand, Millenium hand and an eon hand When they meet its a happy land Powerful man, universe man... |
| #2crimsondeathMar 08, 2008 11:20:58 | I believe you've gone past powergaming and are approaching munchkin territory. Fortunately, your strategy doesn't look especially effective, so it probably won't matter very much. |
| #3sunic_flamesMar 08, 2008 11:23:14 | There is a word for those who stop playing within the rules and start cheating. It's called munchkin. :D |
| #4aotrscommanderMar 08, 2008 11:29:24 | There's some reason you're choosing to do this instead of, say, working with the new DM? I think that this is being grossly unfair to your DM (let alone the other players); you know you'd not get away with this with an experienced DM, so you're counting on the DM's inexperience to let you munchkin (in the poorest sense of the word)? How is that condusive to fair play? Lying to the DM (or at best deliberately misleading them) and cheating the system is an asshat thing to do for any reason. Your group would be quite within their rights to boot you out if they catch you doing this; best case scenario is they think you're being a jerk if they find out. (You'll be lucky if you don't get the Folding Chair of Salvation, to be honest.) Are you not playing with your friends? If you're doing this because you're playing with people you don't like, I would suggest doing something more constructive like finding a group you do get on with. Not only that, but you do realise you might put the new DM off ever DMing again, right? |
| #5avatar_of_kokushoMar 08, 2008 11:35:49 | **AoK brings out the folding chair of smashing Okay, I've done some things that I'm not proud of, even in this line. I guess the worst was convincing a guy that it would NOT be overpowering for me to play a ghaele eladrin with no LA or racial HD in a level 4 game. That said, it made me feel like crap afterward and I haven't done that since. Not only is it unfun to play, it's unfun for everyone else involved. Your ideas are bad news. They lie in the area of Dragonwrought cheese, which is a far more acceptable way to do this than what you're actually doing, even if that's a crappy thing to spring on a new DM as well. This is not powergaming. This is cheating. Sir, those who feel they have to cheat at D&D are the real losers. |
| #6wonlee76Mar 08, 2008 11:37:13 | You do know your plans for Devastating Critical fails considering Overwhelming Critical is an epic feat and you haven't mentioned anything about that being a "regular" feat. :P But in all seriousness, I'm an advocate that DMs can houserule whatever they feel like to make a more "fun" game for their players but your changes goes in the exact opposite direction. What melee monster with the pre-reqs, feats, and/or class levels would choose not to take Devastating Critical? Seriously, monsters will have a really easy time meeting the Str pre-req on their own. The feat pre-req is a bit tough but a few fighter levels could easily fill that up. Now you got CR 10+ melee bad guys with high threat range weapons going around provoking Fort Saves vs. death 20%-30% of the time. Not a fun game that players are about to get their asses handed to them for the same trick you use against them. |
| #7shaggy_shaggsMar 08, 2008 11:41:35 | You're not a powergamer, you're a cheater. And you suck at it. |
| #8jimprofitMar 08, 2008 11:55:06 | You do know your plans for Devastating Critical fails considering Overwhelming Critical is an epic feat and you haven't mentioned anything about that being a "regular" feat. :P That's possible, but I don't think the GM would think of giving a monster the feats unless it was for the big bad villain. Not that it's much of my problem anyway... Well... I guess it is sense we don't really have a healer... But I'll be self-sufficient.:D |
| #9avatar_of_kokushoMar 08, 2008 12:15:12 | You know what? I'd LET you. Then you could have loads of fun facing enemies who used the same dirty tricks as you did. Just to let you know, in my eyes, you seem to have a RL Cha score near that of a black pudding's. Slime lets itself be known. |
| #10magrusMar 08, 2008 12:18:57 | You're a cheater, and I'd boot you from my game and spread the word to the nearby DM's afterwards too. To be honest, I love getting players like you once in a while, when I start a new game with a new group. That way I can make an example of someone, and the rest tow the line and don't pull nonsense. I put a lot of work in to run a game, having someone cheat in my game is a slap in the face to me. |
| #11exposed_wiresMar 08, 2008 12:22:33 | I'm hoping the OP is a troll. Who would think to tell us about how he's cheating and even bother asking us if hes powergaming. |
| #12jimprofitMar 08, 2008 12:35:41 | I'm hoping the OP is a troll. Who would think to tell us about how he's cheating and even bother asking us if hes powergaming. Well I wasn't sure what the definition of a powergamer was. And more importantly, if I was, maybe some useful tips on how to get away with it more legitamately or more discreetly. ;) |
| #13sunic_flamesMar 08, 2008 12:43:54 | So you're asking for help pulling a munchkin act (not the same thing) and to cheat? Right... I hear Phrenic Dire Wolves with Improved Initiative manifesting a souped up Mind Thrust in the opening round do wonders to low level problematic types. For mid and high levels, take advantage of the fact advancing certain creatures by HD produces extremely good results. For example: http://www.d20srd.org/srd/monsters/assassinVine.htm 4 Huge Assassin Vines = CR 8 encounter. :D |
| #14white_wizardMar 08, 2008 13:01:38 | Meet a construct (like... say... an advanced adamantine golem DR 20/epic and adamantine :evillaugh ). Or undead monsters (dracolich anyone? -you know, if you are ready for epic feats, that surely means that you are also ready for epic monsters ).Or slimes (any of them and many of them). Or a band of 20th lvl fighters each with a heavy fortification armor. The matter is that no player can really cheat. |
| #15StevenOMar 08, 2008 13:19:56 | It seem to me you've passed beyond munchkin, who abuses the rules, to cheater, who doesn't follow the rules. To me a powergamer is one who works clearly within the RAW and also the RAI. They may build powerful character but they don't look for sometimes obscure loop-holes (I'm looking at Precocious Apprentice among others.) to rule-lawyer into broken builds. |
| #16jimprofitMar 08, 2008 13:30:05 | It seem to me you've passed beyond munchkin, who abuses the rules, to cheater, who doesn't follow the rules. One of the newer players who isn't a personal friend of mine (Like James, Amaya, or Patrick) confronted me alone with it. He wasn't rude about it, he just stated I was breaking the rules, but he wouldn't tell the GM cause he didn't want the GM to feel stupid and be embaressed on his first-time. And I gave him my infamous catchphrase. ![]() Screw the rules, I have a girlfriend! (Note: This line was invented as to poke a stab at all gamers that we are lonely losers.. Infact, everyone I've stated it to is bewilderd with confusion untill I explain it to them, then they get ****** and walk away. And even my friends are like "he gave you the girlfriend line didn't he? We've been down that road...") XD We all have one-liners. This isn't so much I'm not with friends or i'm hurting my friends, we sortof almagated two D&D groups to expand and have more diversity. To me a powergamer is one who works clearly within the RAW and also the RAI. They may build powerful character but they don't look for sometimes obscure loop-holes (I'm looking at Precocious Apprentice among others.) to rule-lawyer into broken builds. So a rules lawyer is a verb not a noun? I would figure it'd be the other way around. I'm not really in the loop to D&D lingo, i'm more of a casual gamer. I'd much rather be playing a videogame, hacking the map in halo, and when the other players whine on the mic. ![]() Screw the rules, I have a girlfriend! Then kill them. Granteed I suck with rocket launchers, snipers, and am too impatient to camp. RPGs expand my amusement because it's less repetitive and predictable then videogames. |
| #17entropy_judgeMar 08, 2008 15:11:30 | We all have one-liners. There are two kinds of people with one-liners: people who say very witty things, and people who talk way to bloody much. You are almost certainly not the former. Also, your "infamous catchphrase" sucks. (Some people say there is a third category of people with one-liners: Those who spend a lot of time actually coming up with one just to say they have their own catchphrase.) So a rules lawyer is a verb not a noun? It's both. A rules-lawyer is someone who is so caught up in the rules that he/she does not care about practicality, believability, or the better aspects of storytelling, only what is possible within the rules. To rules-lawyer is to find a specific set of rules that back up what you're trying to do by saying "The rules say I can!" I'd much rather be playing a videogame, hacking the map in halo, and when the other players whine on the mic. So you're admitting that you'd rather be cheating at a video-game than cheating at a pen-and-paper RPG? And you came here for ...? |
| #18sunic_flamesMar 08, 2008 16:03:31 | The odd thing is he described himself as Lawful Evil elsewhere, when he's clearly only half right. Guess which half? |
| #19jo_pistachioMar 08, 2008 16:40:36 | This is an insult to power gamers everywhere. |
| #20evilviper77Mar 08, 2008 16:48:50 | Powergamer? No not really. Douche? Yes, I'd have to say so. |
| #21CCSMar 08, 2008 16:48:51 | So, you're planning to take advantage of a new DM by simply using feats "earlier" than when the rules say that they'd normally be available. And you wonder if that makes you a powergamer. No sir, that does not make you a powergamer. It makes you a filthy cheater. |
| #22theflyingasianMar 08, 2008 16:54:06 | Here's a tip. You suck at powergaming. Anyone who needs to cheat in order to make an overpowered character is a disgrace to legitamate powergamers like myself everywhere. I could probably make a more ungodly-overpowered character than yours at fifth level. With only the PH. And actually following the rules. ... Semi-edit: reading your post for a second time gives me an overwhelming urge to kick you. Actually, reading anything you've posted so far gives me an overwhelming urge to kick you. Don't you get it? We don't like your type. And by "your type", we mean "unintelligent, hoplessly anti-social freaks that need to cheat in order to be a munchkin." ... Pathetic excuse for a piece of ****... |
| #23sunic_flamesMar 08, 2008 17:05:25 | I concur. Any real optimized build would mulch it. Even if 8 levels lower. |
| #24pigknightMar 08, 2008 17:33:07 | I have 1 word to say, wow. Seriously this isn't power gaming, THIS IS MADNESS (300 refrence for all you that don't know), your munchkinizing this to crazy amounts, and your character is still sub-par. You have to look yourself in a mirror and say "Am I good at DnD?" we all know what your answer is, do you? |
| #25redwizardMar 08, 2008 17:53:26 | Uh, you know he's a troll right? |
| #26pigknightMar 08, 2008 18:39:54 | Ok so the mirror breaks but still. |
| #27kelvinaw273Mar 08, 2008 21:03:07 | One of the newer players who isn't a personal friend of mine (Like James, Amaya, or Patrick) confronted me alone with it. He wasn't rude about it, he just stated I was breaking the rules, but he wouldn't tell the GM cause he didn't want the GM to feel stupid and be embaressed on his first-time. And I gave him my infamous catchphrase. With your attitude, I suspect that (a) You are lying about having a girlfriend and (b) if even if you aren't, you have as long as it takes her to get to know you before she walks. We all have one-liners. This isn't so much I'm not with friends or i'm hurting my friends, we sortof almagated two D&D groups to expand and have more diversity. I'm frankly surprised you have friends at all. I have not known many people who were proud of acting like jerks, and all of them were very lonely people. In fact the saddest thing is that some of them were blissfully unaware of how much their 'friends' laughed at them behind their backs. I'm not really in the loop to D&D lingo, i'm more of a casual gamer. I'd much rather be playing a videogame, hacking the map in halo, and when the other players whine on the mic. Ahhh ... so you're one of those players that make up for their inadequacies in life by cheating at games. I see ... you've made it as far as understanding that cheating in real life doesn't get you anywhere, but are so desperate to get ahead in something you cheat at games. That explains a lot. Let me give you a word or two of advice: Spend as much time learning to actually play the games you cheat at as you do cheating at them, and you may become half decent player instead of a loser whose only sad pleasure in life is ruining the games of other people. Then kill them. Granteed I suck with rocket launchers, snipers, and am too impatient to camp. RPGs expand my amusement because it's less repetitive and predictable then videogames. Oh, I can make some predictions for all RPGs you play at: 1) You will spoil the game for the other players. 2) You will get thrown out of the group. 3) You couldn't play a straight game to save your life. 4) I can assure you that gaining your jollies by ******* off other people will eventually result in a very painful and humiliating experience for you, one that may end up in your being hospitalized. I strongly recommend that you stop doing this and get a life. You are as sadly lacking in one as any solitary gamer that you mock with your "catchphrase" ... |
| #28jimprofitMar 08, 2008 21:16:58 | Hey if you to know the GM was ok with it, the little twurp's scheme failed. It's like elementry school all over again... "GM! Jim's trying to cheeeeat! He's taking an [epic] feat early!" GM Response: Hey, if he can get his strength to 25 he deserves the feat. Isn't epic just another way of saying really hard to get? Jim: More or less. *Waited for the player to make the GM look like a fool* I could three ways to get the strength I need lol! Giant belt Animal Affinity Other epic feats taken early Fun stuff lawl! lol, alot of anger I'm sensing. Well, if anyone is pro-powergaming. Any good sites? Tips maybe? The rest of you don't have to like me, I'm not in your game, so it's really not your problem. And you can't complain too much about how I treat my aquitances because There's only two types of players. The badass and the dead weight. And I don't want to be dead weight. And i'm too lazy to actually learn the rules lol! And ftr my girlfriend knows me better then anyone, I've done some fairly jerk things to her i'm not proud of. Not cause I feel bad for doing it, but cause it was like kicking a puppy. I'm seriously considering writing a self-help guide on "how to be lawful evil: a guide to confidence and being better then the people around you". |
| #29shaggy_shaggsMar 08, 2008 21:22:19 | If you're too lazy to learn the rules, you will never be a powergamer. |
| #30entropy_judgeMar 08, 2008 21:50:27 | "Hey, my DM's a worthless jerk who'll roll over if I present my case right! YAY!" Alright, your point is? lol, alot of anger I'm sensing. Well, if anyone is pro-powergaming. Any good sites? Tips maybe? First, it's not "alot," it's "a lot." Second, I don't think anyone here is against power-gaming, they just have a sense of fair play (extremely Lawful behavior, actually - you are either Chaotic or Neutral) and a good idea of how the rules work. Furthermore, a Lawful Evil person would know how to power-game and wouldn't need to cheat. The rest of you don't have to like me, I'm not in your game, so it's really not your problem. And you can't complain too much about how I treat my aquitances because You come here, then tell us it's not our problem and we can't complain? Okay, so you're here to brag and troll. Gotcha. There's only two types of players. The badass and the dead weight. Actually, it's "Those who want to play and those who don't." You're in the latter category. And I don't want to be dead weight. Do you realize those two statements are contradictory? Anyone who is too lazy to learn the rules and therefor cheats *is* dead weight. |
| #31pigknightMar 08, 2008 22:00:44 | Wait a sec he just said he's mean to his gf (still toubt he has 1) because he's CS, I mean LE? What the heck (I don't have a girlfriend so don't pull any of that "Well you don't havea gf" crap). |
| #32etarnonMar 08, 2008 22:22:44 | OP is a Troll. He doesn't care about any of your responses, he's here to spin people up for thrills, and go back to Halo, and report as to how he pwned WOTC forums. Evidence "I like to mistreat my girlfriend, it's as much fun as kicking a puppy." (paraphrased). Don't go there. |
| #33cartiganMar 08, 2008 22:45:14 | If you're too lazy to learn the rules, you will never be a powergamer. Yeah, I'm not sure how you can be a powergamer if you are pulling stuff out of a magic hat. Now you are just a failgamer. |
| #34novabombMar 08, 2008 22:53:46 | Optimizer- One who is adept at using the rules to get maximum benefit for a character concept. Powergamer- One who builds and advances a character for the main purpose of playing a powerful character (within the ruleset). Munchkin- (This is debateable) This is the type of person who will do minor things outside the rules (like lying about a dice roll, or use hypothetical stuff. (Like the HIVE) Cheater- you. Dude, I think you should take some time, and reflect on your actions. Do you actually believe that cheating makes you 13373R? If you have to cheat to feel good enough, powerful enough, leet enough, whatever, don't you think you have some issues to work out? |
| #35kelvinaw273Mar 09, 2008 8:32:33 | I think we have to conclude with his gross inability to get the point this player is either a Troll, or the Alignment Chaotic Stupid actually does exist, and JimProfit is it ... ... either way he's a very sad individual who has to get his jollies this way. |
| #36sunic_flamesMar 09, 2008 10:39:20 | As a Lawful Evil Powergamer, I find all of this crap being spewed highly offensive. You sir, are a Chaotic Stupid Munchkin. *greater multishot volley with hunter's mercy, flaming burst, and acidic burst, among many other things* In before the lock. :D |
| #37zerospace9000Mar 10, 2008 1:02:23 | Hmm, I wonder if giving him a link to Goatse would do the trick? |
| #38jimprofitMar 10, 2008 1:14:33 | Hmm, I wonder if giving him a link to Goatse would do the trick? I've linked to lots worse. Ever heard of children in the sandbox? Simply put: It was a huge dissapointment LOL!:P "I've been swindled! There's no children! There's not even a sandbox!" |
| #39white_wizardMar 10, 2008 8:38:42 | Hey if you to know the GM was ok with it, the little twurp's scheme failed. It's like elementry school all over again... 1) stay IT, please. RPG. Focus... Good. 2) don't complain if you get criticism: you are posting on a forum, not on a fan club of yours. 3) Who cares? This isn't "speak about your girlfriend today", you know. |
| #40clem-da-squigMar 10, 2008 10:16:57 | 1) stay IT, please. RPG. Focus... Good. I vote we start a JimProfit Fan Club. I'm President. Who wants to be Vice-President? |
| #41KruskMar 10, 2008 11:44:01 | In answer to your question, you are not power gaming, you are cheating. In answer to your other question, will anyone help you, the people will generally not help cheaters, and they generally are kicked from the game. |
| #42sunic_flamesMar 10, 2008 15:27:41 | Boot to da Head. Also, I prepared Explosive Runes this morning. Hey, it works. |
| #43etarnonMar 11, 2008 2:05:49 | Meh, if you want to start a Fan club, name it after people that are worthy of oxygen. |
| #44allarianMar 11, 2008 2:54:39 | I'm so very happy, never before have I seen this much stupidity in one thread. Next post I get to make fun of a brittle, aproval seeking idiot, it's like christmas came early this year!:P |
| #45solis_bjornMar 11, 2008 5:42:51 | Aside from trying to pull one over on a new DM because he may not know/understand all the rules yet, what about the group youre playing with? Think any of them might catch on to your s***? You're not a powergamer - you're a hack, and I for one am glad I'm not being subjected to your crap at a table. Unfortunately I really don't think you care at all, except about yourself which also makes for a bad gaming experience, you're just here for attention. I hope your plan fails in the worst way, I really do. |
| #46mirannanMar 11, 2008 6:11:15 | This nonsense isn't even within the rules AFAIK. Feats with a stat prerequisite can only be taken if you have that stat at the required level permanently - using rolled stat, level-based increases and inherent bonuses only. You can't use stat-increasing spells with permanency cast on them for this purpose, you can't use magic items and you certainly can't use spells with limited duration. Even if this isn't in RAW, if I was a DM that would be my ruling. Even if your DM gave in to rules-lawyering, there is still another line of defense against this nonsense - the RAW clearly states that feats for which you no longer meet the prerequisites can't be used; and this effect chains. In other words, if you have a feat tree and the first one on the list becomes unusable then all the others do. |
| #47clem-da-squigMar 11, 2008 11:40:27 | I'm so very happy, never before have I seen this much stupidity in one thread. Next post I get to make fun of a brittle, aproval seeking idiot, it's like christmas came early this year!:P **** man, if you like seeing people make total fools out of themselves(I do too)check out the crippled rogue thread. |
| #48KruskMar 11, 2008 13:51:23 | Even if your DM gave in to rules-lawyering, This is not rules lawyering, this is simply cheating or asking the DM for an exception from the rules. Very diffrent issues. |
| #49mercuriusMar 11, 2008 14:50:45 | This nonsense isn't even within the rules AFAIK. Actually, a magic item boosting a stat does actually count as meeting the prereqs. But, like all prereqs, once you no longer have that stat (say, by losing the item), you can't use the feat or whatever. This is pretty flat out RAW. Otherwise, it'd actually be impossible for many PCs to obtain feats that they're expected to get. That has little bearing on the cesspool that is this thread's main point, but I felt like a little edification. |
| #50williamtannerMar 11, 2008 18:41:30 | A powergamer is someone who works within the available constraints to create the most powerful character they can conceive. They try to maximize their advantages and minimize their disadvantages, from a purely statistical perspective (with little if any regard for personality). I don't think it's unfair to say that nearly everyone makes some effort to optimize their characters, unless they are deliberately going the other way. Once they (knowingly) break the constraints in their character build, they are cheating. Whereas there are levels of powergaming, cheating is absolute. |
| #51crimsondeathMar 11, 2008 20:30:49 | A powergamer is someone who works within the available constraints to create the most powerful character they can conceive. They try to maximize their advantages and minimize their disadvantages, from a purely statistical perspective (with little if any regard for personality). Some powergamers create characters with interesting personalities. I don't think it's unfair to say that nearly everyone makes some effort to optimize their characters, unless they are deliberately going the other way. By "deliberately going the other way", are you referring to, for example, a Wizard with 6 Intelligence (that is, a character specifically designed to be as ineffective as possible)? Because that is pretty much the opposite of an effective character. (And it's not something I've heard of anyone doing, except as a joke or a thought experiment.) |
| #52allarianMar 11, 2008 22:11:59 | Honestly, what has to be said has been, several times in fact. At this point we are, collectively, feeding an obvious troll. I'm resisting the urge to make imaginary girl freind jokes. |

| #54valgoth_dupMar 13, 2008 13:53:27 | Yeah, you're a munchkin. And... playing a chaotic character doesn't mean you ignore the rules of the game, or try and get around them all "most powerfulest kobold" style. Here's a tip: If you ever say, "Well, I changed the (whatever)" without a good, solid, logical reasoning in-game, you're at least a power gamer. |
| #55jimprofitMar 13, 2008 14:20:13 | lol, I changed the rules cause A) I didn't feel like waiting forever to get some badass feats. B) I really like warrior-type characters but hate how they've been jank sense 3rd edition cameout, so this is D&D affirmative action. C) I'm just trying to be powerful enough to be independant so people don't have to heal me all the time. (So if anything I'm being too selfless.) D) It fits my character concept. He's a friggin army general. If an army general can't kill you with a swipe of his sword then who can?! Maybe if he was some lowly bafoon of a cadet I'd play the rules as written. | #59kelvinaw273Mar 14, 2008 3:32:43 | lol, I changed the rules cause Why not simply declare yourself 20th level then? It makes as much sense. Any idiot can ignore the rules and cheat. To be badass takes attitude and skill ... ah well, looks like 20th level won't help you either then ... B) I really like warrior-type characters but hate how they've been jank sense 3rd edition cameout, so this is D&D affirmative action. No, Tomb of Battle and and learning to optimise well is D&D affirmative action. This is cheating. C) I'm just trying to be powerful enough to be independant so people don't have to heal me all the time. (So if anything I'm being too selfless.) No, you're just trying to make the rest of the party superfluous to your character. This is a social game in which teamwork is encouraged. You are working counter to the intent of the game and unbalancing things. D) It fits my character concept. He's a friggin army general. If an army general can't kill you with a swipe of his sword then who can?! Maybe if he was some lowly bafoon of a cadet I'd play the rules as written. What are his skills at strategy, tactics and leadership? These are what an army general should be good at - he has soldiers around to do the actual fighting. Any grunt can swing a sword, it takes brains to lead an army. Don't you even understand that much? E) The only rule is zero. Which is the prerogative of the DM, not any of the players. When players do it, it's cheating. You obviously don't know the first thing about the game, or about social conduct. You're not the first, you won't be the last. |
| #60ayraMar 14, 2008 7:01:52 | lol, I changed the rules cause Actually, in response to "A", it's quite fun to work towards your feats. There are some really neat feats at lower levels too. I'm personally a fan of the tactical feats for fighters. To each their own though. As to "B", that's not true. I'm currently playing a fighter who's pretty powerful and a lot of fun to play. It all depends on the rest of your party too, though. Teamplay is pretty much essential. Using bull rush/directed bull-rush and what not to line up enemies nicely, so that the wizard can hit with an AoE attack feels pretty rewarding in the end ![]() About "C", you don't need that much healing. Buy a belt of healing for in-combat purposes. If you generally play right, the party cleric won't waste his time on healing you in combat. Disposing of the monsters has a higher priority, as they can probably do more damage than you can heal. Outside of combat you can just use wands of vigor or something like that. Additionally, look at the combat focus feats. They make you a whole lot stronger once you initiate combat (there's even one that gives you fast healing). Additionally, rather than fudging with the rules like that you could ask if you could add a template to your character. My fighter, for instance, will soon get the mineral warrior template. He gains a burrow speed, damage reduction 8/adamantine, a really nice stat change, a natural armor bonus of +3 and many more. In the end though you're only fooling yourself. If you've worked on a character, be it in a computer game or on pen & paper, you'll feel more accomplished regarding the game. Additionally the game is made to pose a challenge, which you're destroying. You won't have fun for long this way :o |

| #65mindolinMar 14, 2008 16:39:03 | First, maybe you should learn a little about army generals. Are they all promoted based on merit? By the Nine Hells, no. If you are starting at level 1 and say you are an army general, then you were given command because of your social rank, not skill. Generals plan the battles, they don't always fight them, and they sure as heck aren't likely to be the strongest, except in a chaotic evil society, where you have to be strong just to survive. You are not a powergamer, you are a cheater. It is not the place of a player to rewrite an existing feat so they can be "uber strong". You want an army general that can kill an opponent with one strike? Play a fighter with a greatsword, and a 16 in strength. Good job, you deal, on average, 10 damage, which is enough to kill a typical 1st level warrior. There, now you don't need to cheat and make legitimate powergamers look bad by claiming to be one of us. As has been stated, powergamers work within the rules, cheaters change the rules to fit their needs. |

Read the thread (If, you know, you don't mind having your brain raped) and you will find that he calls himself LE at several different points. Infernal Lawyers (Worse then regular ones!) would easily take that statement and ensure that his soul ends up in the possesion of one of the lords of the nine. |

But if one takes his actions into account, he's CE, thus placing his soul under the possesion of one of the Demon princes, which is equally, if not more terrible a fate. :invasion: :invasion: :invasion: :invasion: :invasion: :invasion: :invasion: :invasion: :hoppingma :hoppingma :hoppingma :hoppingma :hoppingma :hoppingma :hoppingma :hoppingma :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce: |

| #126sunic_flamesMar 22, 2008 10:36:14 | ![]() He is obviously Chaotic Stupid. Lawful Evil would be regarding people as inferior. Individual persons may not be, but people are because there are just enough who need warning labels like 'hot coffee may be hot' to drag the average down beyond all hope of recovery. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. But then he messed it up by his actions towards the group. From the LE mindset, the group fell under one of three rough categories: 'Friends' aka those few who are actually worthy of respect, and that therefore have earned the right to be exempted from such treatment... at least until they forfeit said right. Useful resources in that they haven't really earned it, but it's still counterproductive and stupid to squander your own resources. Self interest ensures they will at least be treated decently until again, they forfeit that right. Then there's the worthless types which are neither of the above. No reason to associate with them willingly and kinda stupid to do so as it accomplishes nothing. Since clearly based on the examples given the OP's situation is the second or third group... Chaotic Stupid. Not Lawful Evil. This message brought to you by the Association for Exposing Posers. Oh and you did the picture wrong. Thumbnail = bad. :P |

| #135avonderreMar 22, 2008 23:39:12 | Hi! :D Im avo from the char-op boards, and I have this to say: If you're going to spend that much effort, at least make something good. Honestly, to answer your question, you are not a powergamer, and munchkin is too nice of a word. Im fully aware you are likely a troll but oh well. Now if you are going to play something, play it by the book, clean, and without any rule breaking. It's much more satisfying believe me. Better results can also be had if you simply take the time to read what's available, for example, if you like high str... goliath barbarian 1 + reckless rage feat + an assumed 16 base strength (no fudging those 18's (~.^) + feral template = 16 + 4 (rage) + 2 (mountain rage variant from the goliath barb level + 4 (racial) + 2 (reckless rage) + 4 (feral) + 2 (assume gauntlets of Ogre str) = 34, or in other words, you lose That's with a mere +2 LA, and not at level 20, this achievable easily in the early game, you be say, 4th level character (actual 6th after LA) Throw in whatever feats, classes or whatever to suit, so long as you can actually take them. And you need cheaterific epic level feats to hit 25? *sighs* Love, Avo |
| #136rictras_shardMar 23, 2008 0:12:55 | I skipped a couple of pages, so someone may have already stated this. Does anyone else think the OP is making up the entire thing? Based on his obvious lack of knowledge of how to actually do things in D&D, I presume he just saw someone else doing what he described, or read about it, and claimed he was the one to do it to try to seem relevant. Something that caught my attention, though. Presuming, for the sake of argument, that what he is claiming is correct, at one point he stated he is doing this to be a badass. Well, son, power alone doesn't make you a badass. You achieve it through your fellow players knowing that if you wanted to, you could take out anyone you wanted to (in game) through sneakiness, careful planning, and the ability to improvise on the spot. |
| #137pigknightMar 23, 2008 0:39:31 | Shard I think you just may be right. |
