| #1redheadsaidJun 12, 2008 13:06:07 | I have never played D&D before. I picked up the 4e PHB and am trying to create my first PC, a level 1 Tiefling Warlock. I am struggling with figuring out how to calculate the correct values of everything. Below is my current thought process and methods. Please, please, review this and let me know where I am going awry. Introductory Information: |
| #2illyannafarseerJun 12, 2008 13:13:26 | So far looks alright Passive perception is your perception skill if you take 10. So that the DM doesn't have to say "Roll a perception check" and have the player meta game, he can just get your passive perception score, then when you enter a room can check to see if you notice the bomb under the table. If you say "I search the room" then you'd make an active check and roll. Your ability mod is indeed the bonus you get from your abilities. So for the Bluff skill, you'd add in your Cha bonus for example. IF you get a racial bonus of +2 then that would go in misc or race slot (if there is one). Hps are right on. So are surges. YOu are good on your trained skills. You get four and you get the +5 bonus for being trained. Good to go on the Action points as well. AC, and saves look good too. Your basic attack is a standard non-power melee attack with your primary weapon. so if you have a dagger it would be 1d4+str with a str vs AC to hit. :D |
| #3redheadsaidJun 12, 2008 14:01:50 | Should my reflex and will be 13's instead of 12's due to the +1 I get from being a Warlock? So the attack portion calculates what I add to the d20 role to see if I hit my target and the damage portion calculates how much damage I do if I land said hit? |
| #4jprostovichJun 12, 2008 14:43:00 | Your + 2 to Charisma and Intelligence add to your actual score, not your ability modifier (Abil Mod) So your Cha should be 18 and your Int should be 16 Your bonus for CHA should be +4, and that you would add to your Will Save. So 10+ 1/2 your level, + 4 ability modifier +1 for Class bonus =15 Your Reflex should be 10 + 1/2 your level, + 3 ability modifier, +1 Class bonus=14 Finally, you get to add your Dexterity bonus or Intelligence bonus to your armor class if you are wearing light armor, so You would add the higher to your score there as well so 10 +1/2 level +2 for armor, +3 for Int bonus, giving you a total of 15 I hope this helps....don't hesitate to ask more questions |
| #5redheadsaidJun 12, 2008 15:13:50 | ![]() So like this? I'm a bit confused where you are getting the +4 for CHA and +3 for INT. It's very unclear how all the values tie together. I've read the PHB several times. |
| #6wellsJun 12, 2008 15:20:15 | Yup, like that. Buuuut, you have a +1 Fort. |
| #7redheadsaidJun 12, 2008 15:32:16 | Yup, like that. Buuuut, you have a +1 Fort. Where is this +1 coming from? |
| #8knarfyJun 12, 2008 15:46:24 | I suggest you re-read the part on ability scores and ability modifiers more carefully. |
| #9j_hoskins144Jun 12, 2008 15:55:41 | on your ability scores, they give you ability modifiers to apply to different things such as your reflex and fortitude. when your ability SCORE is over a 11 then you start accruing a positive ability MODIFIER. example ability score = ability modifier 10-11 = 0 12-13 = +1 14-15 = +2 16-17 = +3 and so on, thats why you would get a bonus to your fortitude saves from having a higher CON or STR score |
| #10plague_windJun 12, 2008 16:03:53 | Looks good man, i would suggest going back and rereading all the warlock has to offer though. I like the the other packs over infernal: fey, star, infernal (order that i like them best). Misty Step is down right awsome especially if you have a well balanced party with some awsome strikers who know what there doing. Your choice though everyone has there own playing style :D luck man and have some good times. |
| #11redheadsaidJun 12, 2008 16:07:53 | Yeah.... I totally glossed over the table on page 17. I got my Ability Scores & Defenses all straightened out now with numbers that match what have been stated thus far. I am still confused on utilizng the Workspaces for Attack & Defense. Can someone provide and example of what those look like? And how do I make use of the Basic Attack section? Thank you all for your patience. When I'm done I'll write up the whole process from start to finish so other new players don't strugle as much. |
| #12drmorganesJun 12, 2008 16:50:52 | Ability score bonus math: Bonus = (Score-10)/2, rounded down |
| #13jprostovichJun 12, 2008 17:32:10 | RedHeadSaid, I just noticed you have your initiative listed as "12" which is your Dexterity. Your Initiative is equal to your dexterity bonus, (so +1) in this case, not +12....a 12 initiative is full of win, to be sure, but a 1st level Warlock most likely wont be able to score that high.:D |
| #14drmorganesJun 12, 2008 18:47:05 | I am still confused on utilizng the Workspaces for Attack & Defense. Can someone provide and example of what those look like? The workspaces are a quick reference area for your favorite attacks. As an Infernal Pact Warlock, you have Eldrich Blast and Hellish Rebuke as your Level 1 At Will powers. You might want to note the Attack information for both powers in your Attack Workspace. Rather than try to describe this, I've taken the liberty of creating a character sheet based on the information in your first post. Myth Weavers is still working on their 4E sheet. "Bonus" in the Damage Workspace should read "Damage" instead. If your warlock was using an enchanted implement, you would add the implement's bonus in the "Enh" box for each power in both the Attack and Damage Workspaces. As for Basic Attacks... ALL characters have two additional At Will powers: Melee Basic Attack and Ranged Basic Attack (PHB, p287). These work just like any other At Will power. Melee Basic Attack is STR vs AC and does 1[W]+STR damage. Ranged Basic Attack is is DEX vs AC and does 1[W]+DEX damage. Both target a single creature. You must be holding a melee weapon to make a Melee Basic Attack, or a ranged weapon to make a Ranged Basic Attack. |
| #15thepantherJun 12, 2008 19:03:45 | Is noone going to let the OP know about his ability choices vs. his chosen pact? I drafted a post, but it was so patronising I didn't feel like posting it. Anyone here got some tact? ;) |
| #16redheadsaidJun 12, 2008 19:59:20 | Is noone going to let the OP know about his ability choices vs. his chosen pact? Do you mean to say I should maybe re-allocate points to constitution? Yes, I see that now. I was just trying to correctly fill out the sheet before I started to concern myself with optimizing. |
| #17high_octaneJun 13, 2008 12:24:20 | The things listed next to each defends are what you enter into the fields and then you add them up to get the number you put into the circle. The first says 10 + 1/2 level. You add one half your current level (rounded down) to 10. You are level 1 to the total is 10. The next says "Abil". This the ability modifer associated with that particular defense. For example, your fort (fortitude) defense is associated with constitution, so you put in this field your constitution modifier, which is 1. Next ones say Class, Feat, Enh. In these boxes you put any bonuses (or penalties) from your class, a feat, or item enhancements respectively. If you have bonuses to this defense due to something not covered by the previous areas (such as from your race) you put them under a Misc box. Once those boxes have been filled (or left blank if no bonus or penalty applies and you dont feel like putting a 0 in) You add up all the numbers and that is your defense. In this case, your fort defense would be 11 (10 + 0 from class levels + con modifier of 1 and no other sources) Now AC is a special defense in a couple regards. One is that in addition to ability modifier you add your armor bonus which is 2. Also armor has two abilities associated with it, intelligence and dexterity. You take whichever ability is HIGHER and use that as the stat associated with your AC. Your dexterity is 13 and your intelligence is 16. Thus you associate intelligence with your AC, and put your intelligence modifier in that field (which is 3) and add your armor bonus to THAT (which is 2) and you get 5. Thus you put 5 in that field. Your AC then results in a total of 15. As for initiative, under Dex you should put your dexterity MODIFIER (In this case 1) and in the other box you put 1/2 your level rounded down. There is a miscellaneous box in case you have an item or feat that increases initiative specifically. The end result of your initiative should be 1. |
