when i am buying a phb etc, which edition should i get? 4.0 obviously or.......?
Find out whats being run in your area, and buy that phb. That is what you need heh :P.
Don't know how it is with the english book, but the german 3.5 books are very hard to get...
If you start with new books, I would recommend the 4th edition. But that also depends on what you like, and what your group likes. I think the 4th edition is aiming more on having fun with a game, that is not too complicated and keeps the game running. No more different systems for martial, arcane and psionic classes, but a standardized (is that word correct? ^^) system for all classes. Also a great plus...nerfed wizards ;)
In 3.x from a specific point on, a wizard is the "Ah, lets get serious now, let me do..." character. Why think about travelling to a town? We can just teleport there and back in no time, and if you have forgotten something, we teleport back to that town. Why let the rogue gather information from the citizens? Let me just read their minds...or mind control them... Why bother with guards while we are resting? Let me cast this outer dimensional castle, with tons of unseen servants and food and stuff...
As a personal experience, I wanted to sneak into a mansion, coup-de-grace that evil hobgoblin leader, having occupied the town. Finally I can play out my rogue abilities, hide and sneak in, climb the wall, lockpick, and stuff like that. "Wait a second, I cast Invisibility on you, and the cleric casts Silence on that little stone you take with you. No need taking risks here". That was it, with playing out my rogue skills...
If you like that, play 3.5, if you like more balanced games, play 4th

There have been several iterations of D&D throughout the years. These days the different editions are denoted with version numbers.
All versions are different games. They usually have a lot of similar elements, but they play entirely differently (with the exception of 3.0 to 3.5, but still significantly different). Many people have very strong preferences for one edition or another.
Be careful which editions you are buying because often the names of the books are the same throughout the different editions (such as 'Draconomicon' and 'Monster Manual 2').
The currently supported rules edition is 4.0; but as said try to see what's in your area first. You don't really have to buy the books if you don't actually find a game, but I think any of them are decent reads at the least.
3.5 and before books are pretty hard to come by. I have only seen the least-sellable ones lately, and then only in specialty stores (i.e. A1 Comics)
So that's not only the problem with the german version ;)

What does a 3.5 phb go for these days? I have a host of 3.0, 3.5 books I will never use. How can I sell them? I also have a box of Dungeon and Dragon Magazines from Paizo.

I don't have any 3.5 books, and I would like to continue playing 3.5, since I only have 4e books...

Um, what? Are you referring to the books with "2" in the title like PHB2, MM2 and DMG2? If you are, they expansions of the rules. PHB2 has more races and classes, MM2 has more monsters and DMG2 has more cool stuff for DM's to use.
If you're not...I have no idea what you're talking about. D&D 4e is the only edition that WotC is publishing currently. You can probably find 3.5 books at used bookstores now, but they'll eventually become less and less common.
Aidan_Blackthorn is right- they are expansions on the D&D 4e Core Rulebooks. There is no other 4e version other than 4.0. It's all the same version.

On eBay they are going for $20 or so apiece...Just saw DMG, MM and PHB for $61.
