| #1raiziel07May 06, 2008 16:11:28 | I'm trying to create a charcter based around the idea of using an antimagic field or aura as protection, but I don't know where to start. My first idea was to just buy him a "[magic item of] antimagic". This raised some controversy within my group about whether or not the item would even work, as it would be within its own antimagic field, thereby shutting itself off. Now that the field was off, the ring would work again, re-activating the field. We finally decided that it would work almost like a blink effect, where-in everything magical had a 50% chance of working. None of us liked the idea and so didn't try and figure out any more details. My second idea was a spellcaster who could cast antimagic, but it didn't make sense to me to have someone who depended on spells as their primary ability operate inside of an antimagic zone. My third idea was a feat or racial ability, but I haven't been able to find one yet. I know there are some monsters with this ability, but the only ones I have seen are all epic. I finally decided a magic item that can produce the effect would probably be all I could find. If any one has any better ideas, I would appreciate them. I then started looking into what kind of character to use. A purely physical one seemed to make the most sense, so I thought about which ones to use. Monk and Fighter seemed like the most logical choice. After looking into Monk, it seemed like most of their useful abilites were (Su), which would mean they wouldn't work in the antimagic area, so I think I am stuck with fighter. I'll probably choose a race with a +1 or +2 LA, depending on where our DM wants us to start. Probably something like a 1/2-giant, or something with lots of Str and Con. I also thought about choosing a Rogue and using sneak attack as my main means of damage, and possibly including Assassin. Another idea I had was, since I wouldnt be able to use magic items, use Vow of Poverty, but most of its bonus abilities are (Su), so I'm not sure if it is worth it. One idea that I'm not too fond of, but that may be more workable, is a sniper. Since Antimagic only suppresses effects, if I shoot at targets outside of it, the effects should work again once the shot leaves the area, thereby allowing a magic bow to still work, as well as magic arrows, etc. I want to try to avoid this route if possible. I'm just stuck on what is a good starting point for the character. I definitely like the idea of using an antimagic zone as protection from all spells, (Sp), and (Su), and then relying on being better in toe-to-toe combat. Any ideas, or directions to a similar thread I may have missed, would be appreciated. |
| #2shinikamaMay 06, 2008 16:34:18 | If you have access to Tome of Magic, there's a race in there called the Karsite that is innately resistant to magic. It might be worth looking into. |
| #3novabombMay 06, 2008 16:38:59 | Just so you know, there are items that produce anti magic fields. |
| #4raiziel07May 06, 2008 17:11:58 | I took a look at the Karsite, and they only have SR, which there are ways of bypassing. What type of items are you referring to? Are any of them continual? Its possible for a scroll, wand, or other such item to cast it, because you can use the item to cast it, and then the field is active. What I was referring to was an item that is the continual source of the antimagic field. Thanks for the tips though. |
| #5avilonrayneMay 06, 2008 20:14:36 | It's a little iffy, but there are metamagic feats that can shape area spells, including antimagic field. You could try a shaped antimagic field with a hole right around your character and maybe extending only into the "squares" around him. It's then a magic-proof shield. You can't use magic weapons to attack people though (the bubble would litterally need to be about an inch or two away from the chaacter), which limits your offense, but they can't hit you with them either. It's a good defensive thing to try. This only problem with this is finding a way to apply metamagic to the enchantment on the magic item. The other potential use of this shaped item is as a temporary "don't hurt me!" for the rest of the party to "duck and cover" from a big scary spellcaster hurling AoEs at them. |
| #6mishennikaraMay 06, 2008 20:39:30 | Is your character just trying to be resistant to magic or is he gonna not only hate magic but also hate anyone who uses it? For rp/flavor reasons you can consider the Occult Slayer prestige class (Complete warrior pg. 66). Might cause issues if you got other spellcasters or divine casters though. It does have some anti spellcaster stuff such as the ability to rebound magic targeted against the player and bonus to saving throws against spells, etc. |
| #7anansiMay 06, 2008 20:57:25 | There's also the Witchborn Binder prestige class from Magic of Incarnum. They're designed to hunt spellcasters but, in my opinion, are very narrowly focused and in order to work effectively, your group should really be a well-oiled teamwork machine. |

Until they cast spells (which I won't be doing for the hexblade since the mageslayer feats reduce your caster level) they have SU powers including the PHB 2 optional class feature I would take at 4th and not have a familar. By 5th you can PRC into Occult slayer and with the Hexblade Mettle you would be THE anti-caster. ;) |

| #10vulcanstormwrathMay 07, 2008 17:46:56 | WARBLADE weilding spellstoring weapon containing AMF, or any other object/item that causes AMF. Other option is a Spellblade, which grants immunity to one spell. Choose AMF, be a Duskblade. You can cast and no one else will be able to. Always take the lead and take the fight to the casters. |
| #11wizarddogMay 07, 2008 23:13:55 | I feel sorry for any casters who try to adventure with you ;) It wouldn't affect any casters in your own group less they plan on casting harmful spells at you. And I was building it as foe-not as a player character. ;) |
| #12Demetri_KnighthawkMay 08, 2008 12:53:10 | A singular gaping hole in all this is healing, or lack theirof. DM: well the cleric managed to bring the heroes up to about half their HP before his spells run out, what are you at again mister anti-magic? Player: Ummm 5. |
| #13raiziel07May 08, 2008 15:02:09 | I think this thread degenerated into one about an anti-spellcaster character, which was not my intent, per se. Let me explain. My friends and I recently had a special session to celebrate our DMs birthday. I got him a gargantuan blue dragon because he loves blue dragons, and we decided to have a fight session between his blue dragon and 21st level characters that we all made just for the session. He got to build his dragon from the ground up (feats, skills, spells, etc...) and we got to do the same,. Naturally we all spent a good deal of money on items that would help us against the dragon, and we also had a decent number of spellcasters. Come time for the fight, our spellcasters assumed their ranged touch attack spells, designed specifically to be quite deadly would work fine, and our melee types thought that with their items they would be able to hold their own. Unfortunately, our DM, knowing most of our plans, gave his dragon a simple ring of scintillating scales, ensuring that our spellcasters would not hit with any ranged touch spells (this especially screwed my warlock, and my friends warmage who focused on orb of acid with metamagic and other feats). 2nd round of the battle his dragon casts AMF on itself, completely nullifying any of our spellcasters attempts, and any magic items that might be aiding our melee-ers. We quickly realized that the battle was going to boil down to a slug-fest, which our DM was prepared for with his flying, charging blue dragon. Anyway, we played it out for a few more rounds and then dejectedly conceded. I was very impressed by the way the AMF completely shifted the battle to his favor. Once it is up, nothing matters but (Ex) abilities, and pure strength. If you aren't dedicated to being prepared for such a thing, it can be devastating. Thats when I realized that a character who focuses on being the biggest, baddest mofo without relying on magic, would dominate in an AMF. A few ranks in Use Magic Device and a wand of AMF would probably work, but I'd rather find something more permananent. Anyway, thats why I started this thread. I wanted some ideas on: a) a good race, b) a good class, c) good feats, and d) a good way to consistently produce an AMF. All of it based on the assumption that the character will be surrounded by an AMF, which means, no spellcasting, no (Su) or (Sp) class features or abilities, etc... |
| #14drackthorMay 08, 2008 15:15:33 | There are a set of manacles in the Arms & Equipment guide that generate an AMF around the wearer. Magebane Manacles. They also happen to run a hefty 132,000 gold, but I'd assume the price would be lower for an item made for a creature who would willingly walk around with an AMF around themselves. |
| #15tinculinMay 09, 2008 6:51:38 | A few ranks in Use Magic Device and a wand of AMF would probably work, but I'd rather find something more permananent. Doesn't the PHB limit wands to level 4 spells or below? Just off topic, pretty sure I read a thread a few weeks ago by a DM who had been given a blue dragon by his party & was looking for tips on how to beat you all ? ;) |
| #16sunic_flamesMay 09, 2008 7:29:57 | ...The moment that dragon casts AMF on himself the ring shuts off. Guess what? That means he's touch spell bait again. With that set up the ring is rather pointless really. Orbs penetrate an AMF just fine. You did know that right? As for AMFs on melees, guess what? 10 foot radius. Get 15 or more foot reach, and although your weapon will become MW while attacking, you are outside the AMF. Greatreach Bracers ftw. I think everyone at the table messed up there. :P |
| #17raiziel07May 11, 2008 15:21:09 | yeah....thats him....and he did....bad....::hang head in shame:: |
| #18raiziel07May 11, 2008 15:24:58 | Where does it say orbs penetrate an AMF? Sure they can go into it, but they don't have an effect once inside. Yeah 10 ft. radius, sure 15ft reach would be awesome, but we weren't prepared for an AMF, so no one planned to need 15 ft. reach. As for the weapons, yeah you can still swing at him, but without some magical modifiers, how are you gonna hit a dragon with 46 AC? I dont care if its got +1 from MW. As for the ring, sure it doesnt work in the AMF, but neither do the touch spells, so the touch AC is a moot point. |
| #19J.B.May 11, 2008 15:36:39 | AMF can't suppress "instantaneous" conjurations spells once cast "outside" of them. So you could cast any "Orb" spell and fling it into the AMF with it working fine. |
| #20raiziel07May 11, 2008 16:42:03 | After pouring over a thread i found (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=994174&page=2) while searching for the rule about the orbs (which i understand now), I've learned most of what I need to know about how that dragon fight should have still been in our favor, however this still doesn't address my original post, which is ideas for building an AMF-using character. One thing I do realize now is that spells can be cast from in an AMF, which means a caster protecting themself with AMF is not completely unacceptable. For those of you who want to argue the point, please direct me to a thread in which you would like me to explain. Anyway, I may give up on this thread and start anew if it keeps slipping off topic, so please let the ideas for the character as explained roll. In lieu of my new-found understanding of AMFs, please no creatures larger than large. |
| #21sirdanileMay 12, 2008 21:22:49 | on command activated antimagic fields the field does not affect itself or other antimagic fields. Interesting idea... pros- unaffected by most harmful magic good flavor shuts down most "duskbladeish" enemies can turn the tide of the encounter stops enemies magical healing unanimates undead!!!(correct me if i'm wrong) psionics own in antimagic fields with the psionics is different variant cons- cannot have a magic weapon have to have a high ab and to hit without magic shuts down your casters if they don't roll with your build shuts down your fighters magic weapons may cost a lot to get an AMF doesn't really kick in until you get fireballs flung at your party stops your magical healing I believe that in this circumstance a warforged soulknife kicks most creatures butt instead of being one of the worst class choices. They carry non magic weapons which, even if AM field affects it, the soulknife can make a will save to keep it, also they can have their armor enchanted (affects on warforged continue in AM fields which is one of the reasons why undead and constructs don't collapse into rubble.) they can gain psionic feats and have a great to hit bonus in an AM field including the free weapon focus mindblade feats. I would take all 20 levels for the most effect or prestige into soulbow if you want to take the "sniper" approach and iron will is a must, warforged, while reducing will save, allows you to gain Improved fortification which negates critical extra damage and sneak attacks completely while using one of the cons (cannot be healed in an AM field) to completely remove the penalty for taking the feat. In summary with a warforged soulknife you gain and/or fix... pros- unaffected by most harmful magic and criticals and sneak attacks and harmful nonmagical effects. good flavor shuts down most "duskbladeish" enemies. can turn the tide of the encounter. stops enemies magically healing in the field. psionics own in antimagic fields with the psionics is different variant and even without it the soulknife can have an enchanted blade for a dc 20 will save and can try again per move action. cons- cannot have a magic weapon (fixed) have to have a high ab and to hit without magic (fixed) shuts down your casters if they don't roll with your build (gives up healing and outstanding effects on warforged stay) shuts down your fighters magic weapons (semi-fixed, your other fighters will still hate being within 10ft of you) may cost a lot to get an AMF (without magical items you have a lot of left over cash, and until you get this you can use magical items to compensate) doesn't really kick in until you get fireballs flung at your party (it's worth it...) stops your magical healing (wouldnt affect you anyway) overall it's a good idea but has some serious flaws to compensate for. |
| #22krazMay 14, 2008 0:26:36 | Maybe the Halruaan Magehound? http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/iw/20041015b&page=4 |
| #23korgoththepristMay 14, 2008 0:48:16 | In short items that cast AntiMagic field do not counter itself. so it continues to work. Theres a Feat (I Think Complete Mage or Complete Arcane?) Which allows an AoE Spell that you cast (If you cast from an item useing UMD it works. it counts as casting) that allso targets you (AntiMagic Field) You can ignore it. So being any fighter type with this is great. considering your gear is uneffected. Largely argued but a fighter useing this build is a great combination if you pick the right feats to help agest Fighter types or Magic users from a range (Range Fighter is my preverd way to go), But Barbian/Fighter isnt a bad way to go (Keep it even levels), But with so many people allways argueing on Treads rather or not Fighters suck or not. Then i would avoid the whole fighter subject just so people dont complain at ya. So go with some other fighter type and do this. Or be a Monk with AntiMagic Field. That be a decent Combination considering they dont need items (Tho it dos improve there stats and all) But insteed of buying that Gloves of dex or w/e, you can save your gold for Tombs insteed or wishes to imporve your Stats. If it wasnt for the fact that Exalted characters can only use Simple items along with a whole list of items/things they cant use. a Exalted Monk or Fighter or some other class would be good in this combination. But in the end you should possibly just mix and match all of our ideas and use w/e you want. |
| #24korgoththepristMay 14, 2008 0:50:01 | just a quick note on sirdanile comment about Psionics. many people who play Psionics make Psionics and Arcane magic kinda work the same (That way SR and PR are the same, just use greater) Its a varient however. |
| #25korgoththepristMay 14, 2008 0:52:41 | AMF can't suppress "instantaneous" conjurations spells once cast "outside" of them. So you could cast any "Orb" spell and fling it into the AMF with it working fine. Acouly ORB type spells stop working once you hit the Zone. Kinda like hitting a Shield. Same with many other type of magicol effects. though once out or the ZONE leaves the spell continues. Heard it somewhere not sure if its right or not. but i remeber alot of people talking about this and they came up with that above statement. So "FireBall" cant hit the player in the Zone. inless it was targeted at a rock outside the zone and the person/npc was in its radius. but considering most Antimagic zone have a large Radius. Or the fact that most Orb type spells have saves or such (Inless epic), but in Epic level case. it dosnt matter what class you are. just have a high initive. |
| #26sunic_flamesMay 14, 2008 7:20:07 | Korgoth, you are wrong on all counts. Orb spells are instant conjurations. They can pass through an AMF just fine. Most spells cannot affect someone within an AMF as the AMF blocks line of effect. And the save on orbs is against the secondary effect, not the damage. |
| #27sirdanileMay 15, 2008 14:22:08 | even without the psionics is different variant the soulknife can still make a will save (dc 20) and keep his blade... On the complete mage feat i found several that could be useful magic device attunement, attune to your antimagic casting item for putting 1 point in umd rapid metamagic, this you need to have one level of spontaneous caster and spellcraft of 12 it allows you to apply your metmagic without increasing casting time... metamagic spell trigger, metamagic feat and spellcraft or umd at 15, this is probably what you were talking about, shaping the spell to be around you but not on you exactly despite casting from an item. I can't find anything else close to what you mean korgoth. |
