As the thread says. I really like the rcial power and I'm thinking about how annoying shift would be. For Darksun I've used the racial ability on the Elves instead of their PHB racial power. Just wondering if it is an overpowering power or if its lots of fun. Go Kobolds.

Darksun has no Kobolds

It's lots of fun. It's also a little overpowered. He's somewhat of a slippery bugger.

i've played several kobolds all at once and my players hate me for it. i've nearly TPK'd them once and managed to actually do a TPK. i love the shifty racial.

unfortunately i've yet to play from the other side of my non-existent DM screen.

i wanna play!

I know exactly how you feel.

I'm trying to convince one of my players to run the Wrath Recon 3rdParty campain setting, while I run something out of Draconomicon.

Is shifty as powerful as the elven reroll power? My darksun elves get +2 int, +2 dex, shifty, +2 stealth, +2 perception and a speed of 8. Elves on Drksun are raiders and the like and favor the rogue class IIRC.

It depends on what the character focuses on. For a Ranged character Elven Accuracy is better hands down. For a stand-and-bash meleer they're about even with a slight advantage going to Shifty. For someone that depends on positioning (best example being the Rogue right now) Shifty is much better.

I figured as much. Shifty is one of my favourite racial powers. Thats why I gave elves on DS +2 int/dex a'la Eladrin as a drawback as Athasian elves tend towrds rogues anyway.

In core rules a Kobold would be better than Halfling at being a rogue then? I plan on using some higher level Kobods to drive my PCs nuts.

Are you giving them an additional point to some other defense as well? The reason Eladrin get that extra point is because everyone else potentially gets an effective racial bonus to two defenses. In the case of Athasian elves, I'd probably make it Fort. They're known for running long distances and using poison weapons, as I recall.

In some ways, yes. Halflings are pretty much custom made for Artful Dodger Rogues, though. And they've got a bunch of racial feats that help with that. They're also more survivable (with their forced reroll power), so they've got that going. A Kobold Rogue and a Halfling Rogue without any racial feats are probably about even, with a slight advantage to the kobold.

Thats the cost of taking a MM race right? You basicaly don't get any racial feats.

My DS elf gets +1 will defence. I also bumped their speed up to 8 to reflect their elf run speed. I really liked the Kobold racial power and the PHB elf isn't a very good DS elf. Since Kobolds don't exist on arksun (they were wiped out) I figured it would be safe to yoink their racial power. My 4th ed conversion of Muls may have a strong resemblence mechanically to Hobgoblins for exampe- another extinct race.

Thanx for your posts Batshido. I think Kobolds are my favourite MM race. Ineffect Kobolds are slighly faster than other small races.

Do Elves really need 8 speed? The 7 from the PHB plus Shifty if you give it to them is basically 8 if they're also attacking that turn. They had 8 in the old 2E Dark Sun material (if I'm remembering right), but 2E put a lot less emphasis on movement than 4E does. I'd be very cautious about speeding them up too much.

Thanx for your posts Batshido.

Happy to help.

I made a kobold barbarian, but I haven't gotten a chance to play him yet. With shifty, the barbarian at-will that lets you shift 2, and the at-will that lets you charge and ignore opportunity attack while raging, he's gonna be all over the battlefield. I could've also taken the rage that improves your speed and lets you shift more with a move, but that was kind of overkill.

Forgot that. Might knock there speed down to 7 then as with shifty that would make speed 9.

Sort of. That's a full round move, but if you're going to spend a full round moving then you might as well take two moves + minor shift instead of move + 2 minor shifts, so that'd be a potential of 15, assuming they didn't need to shift twice to avoid something.

So on a scale 1-10, 1 being the 3.5 Epic Level Handbook and 10 being cold beer or iced drink of your choice how kewl are Kobolds?

My wife plays a kobold wizards 4E. Long range cold&fire speciality. She loves Minor shifting and use flaming sphere then moving away.

I've been playing a Kolbold since 3.5e, and the 4e version of the little lizards make them a superior rogue at hit-and-run tactics, especially when using distance attacks, moving away and retreating behind cover or allies. Plus, their just so geekily the ultimate underdogs of D&D, how can you at least not love them to smite? ((Let alone want to play?))

Simple question since I'm away from my book...

Can you keep your Shifty has a Readied action to 'shift away' from a melee attack, essentially making it miss you and making yourself just short of impossible to hit by a lone melee character?

Yes, but technically, ANY character can ready a shift like this. Given that readying any action eats up your standard action, though, it's great if you just want to be annoying, but rather not useful otherwise.
