Haven't yet managed to make the move up to 4th ed, still on 3.5 - my question is,

As a 9th lvl Ranger, i would like to take some levels of Arcane Archer. I can fill all the pre-requisites EXCEPT the ability to cant 1st level arcane magic.
In the text beforehand it states that

"Fighters, Rangers, Paladins , and barbarians become arcane archers to add a little magic to there combat abilities"

But as Nether rangers, Fighters and certainly not Barbarians have accsess to arcane magic i wondered how it might be achieved other than taking levels in mage/ sorcerer etc

I suggest you ask your DM if he'll allow your ranger to pursue AA anyway. Personally, I don't think there's an issue of swapping spontaneous divine casting for spontaneous Wis-based arcane casting with a fixed list of spells known (rather like the fixed list of the Beguiler).

Failing that, see if he'll allow you to rebuild your character to support the AA as written.

Oct 05, 2008 9:59:32 If you can get Green Ronins "Advanced Race Codex: Elves" somehow, you have the Soul Archer PrC. It's essentially the Arcane Archer, but without the spellcasting requirement. And it's a bit stronger than the original.

Oct 05, 2008 11:00:33 If you don't want a level in Wizard or Sorcerer you could slip in a level of Bard instead. One way or the other to fill the requirements you must take a level of an arcane class to do so.

Oct 05, 2008 20:54:03 The original writeup assumed that you'd multiclass one level of wizard or sorcerer (with wizard more likely given that it was the favored class of elves and thus not going to cause XP penalty issues).

If you don't want a level in Wizard or Sorcerer you could slip in a level of Bard instead.

One level of bard won't do - you need to be able to cast 1st level spells.

Note that Arcane Archer is not considered to be a strong class, so if you are interested in it for power reasons, I'd recommend to avoid it. If you are in it for the flavor, it's a different story, though.
