Feb 13, 2009 11:08:21 What would most DMs allow in this situation?

We've been waiting for the PH2 for 2 other players in our group, which is when we plan to do a jump forward in time in which our chars grow in like 3-4 levels. I really, really doubt that this jump is going to be after AP comes out, if it is, this thread is pointless. We're impatient for the jump for PH2, so that's likely when we will do the jump. However, I really want to use stuff from AP, I feel like wizards really, really got toned down and boned in general, so.. I'm just hoping that AP will turn this around w/ new powers and feats. So here's my question, despite the fact we've waited months for the PH2 to jump forward so that two of our group can switch their characters to the new classes in the PH2, my DM is probably not going to let me wait a month, or let the group wait a month.

So what is a fair compromise? If I willingly just... did not level, or post-poned leveling until the AP comes out, would most DMs be okay with that, so I could retrain/pick new feats/powers that might come out? I'm not holding my breath on being able to pick a new PP, but at least new powers/feats would be nice. I mean, its one thing if a splat book comes out with one or two powers that are cool and my DM said no to retraining them, but its quite another when arguably the most shafted class in 4e gets a book devoted to its power comes out and the DM says no to letting you use them, you know?

What's a good plan/compromise I can bring to my DM, I guess is ultimately my question?

Feb 13, 2009 12:18:39 personally, i'm glad the wizard got the pants-kicking it deserves, but i do allow retraining when new books come out... within reason. complete character re-creation is usually out of the question unless the new class fits the character better. i don't mind retraining a feat/power or two or three.

heck, as a dm i try to sneak in my new toys in the game when i can, so it's just fair that the player can do the same.

a. The PhB comes out (for characters built from the previous)
b. The power source book for that class comes out.

Feb 13, 2009 15:18:23 You could delay getting (or replacing) powers until it comes out. You may be a BIT gimped, but some of the lower level Wizard powers are better than the higher level ones anyways (I'm looking at YOU, Sleep!)

How many times do you game in a month? You'll only take a small penalty during those sessions. Then you can show everyone else up by unleashing the fury in March.
RP-wise, you could say that he's researching new spells. When the PHB2 comes out, he finishes his research.

Feb 13, 2009 19:23:50 I would say just check with your DM to see if you can level up with everyone else when PHB2 comes out, but ask for permission to overhaul yourself when Arcane Power comes out, since PHB2 isn't really offering anything new for your class that we know of yet. And who knows, maybe the PHB2 will surprise you and there will be a few feats that are relevant to the wizard in there.
