Can someone help clear up my confusion?
I built a Human Paladin with the Character Builder program and gave him pretty generic stats..
STR 16, CON 12, DEX 11, INT 10, WIS 13, CHAR 16 and gave him Plate, Heavy Shield, and Longsword.

Now...AC from what I can tell should be 20 since he's 1st level he gets the generic 10, plus 8 for Plate, plus 2 for Heavy Shield.

The Character Builder program shows 20, but.....it shows 10 for generic, 8 for armor, 4 for Misc, then -2 for the Misc second box.   What is going on here?

Known issue, the CB applies the shield bonus twice, then subtracts it once.

I noticed the same thing with my Warden in the middle of a game.  It's the AC bonus from your heavy shield, no clue why it's being expressed as a negative number though.  In the Character Builder, unequip your shield, you'll notice your AC will drop to 18 and the -2 in misc dissapears.

This thread makes me feel old.

When I first started playing D&D a thread with this title would be someone trying to figure out why having a negative AC is better than a positive AC.

You'd think after all this time they'd fix that.

It's a relatively recent error.

As a developer, I'm assuming it's not an error but rather a quick fix consisting of ten lines of code to avoid writing ten pages of code.

Or they wrote ten pages of code as groundwork for new material (see also "Essentials"), but needed a ten-line fix to make shields work with the new groundwork before the official rollout.
