| #1bloodwhitewolfOct 09, 2013 3:11:21 | [background] ok so i started playing D&D recently within the last month or so, we haad a group of 3 players with 1 dm but never made a set time to play it was just when ever we were all on skype at the time, it was hard to get everyone together even when we were on and i was trying to harder then anyone else. so after a while of trying a 3 person campaign that the 3 of us died because of one persons mistake who was the one other then the dm who wasn't on when everyone else was. we tried starting over... we went from playing daily for an hour-6 hours+ a day to havent done anything as a group for a week so i decided to try a solo campaign...
being a new player i have problems nowing what i'm suppose to do in mst situations it wa all 3 of us working together that got us as far as we got... which was only lvl 3 considering we were confined to SRD basics for 3.5... getting to the point i have little experence with d&d other then a game for beginers at a con set in 4.0 which i was told to forget and this month of play
[back story for campaign] so at the start of my solo campaign i wake up in a feild of dead bodies all down to there cloth left as the only thing on them and it's in a feild of wheat on a non windy night, i have no memories at all of anything and i hear someone calling what i thin to be my name so i hide but forget to conceal my movement before hiding so i'm easily found (newbie mistake), so he didnt seem dangerous as i had no clue before so i followed him, he didn't talk and laughed at a majority of what i said and when i finally convinced him i lost my memories he said then why are you hear to which i replied i don't know and he just went on walking
i'm trying not to metagame but my charter doesnt know magic exists... though there are magical creatures in this camp.... but i decided out of charter that my memory loss was due to magic (no head injuries).
[problem] I dont know what to do... my dm says to google memory loss for help but aside from making my charter go insane inside a camp where everyone is equiped with weapons and arrmor ready for a battle (quick end to a campaign that just started and isn't suppose to end). i can't really think of anything |

Once you know that, you can play to it and start getting things done in the game. It will become clear what's worth rolling for and working towards. Right now you have nothing to go on and are completely aimless. You have no reason to think your character won't be killed or nullified for doing the wrong thing, so you need to know some right things to do so you're at least not making obvious mistakes. If the DM won't work with you on this, ask to start over in a more straightforward adventure, such as a dungeon crawl. |
| #3bloodwhitewolfOct 09, 2013 11:56:16 | my dm says i've made 40 mistakes and he wants it to be a chalenge so i am suppose to figure out what to do on my own... and he won't restart because this is the story he came up with and wants to stick to it until i continue or die in the camp i'e been stuck here for so long though we've seriously spent about 3 hours just on me trying to figure out what to do and he says the solution is so simple that's why i was hoping to get advise from someone that may have dealt with memory loss in a solo campaign before where no one knew them enough to realize it for there charter
i have tried talking to him and that's when he kept telling me to google memory loss and stuff like that... which i spend about 2 hours doing and i've been stuck on what to do going on 4 or 5 days now... |

| #6bloodwhitewolfOct 09, 2013 13:53:01 | thanks for trying, and i thought of running from camp but then i realized i seem to be in a forest meaning metagamming a little since my charter doesnt know/understand that i could easily get lost and i dont have food to bring there's jsut food within the camp i'll just have to stumble with it for a bit more see if theres anything else i can do that i havent thought of... i just hate how i can't even control what language i'm using |

As well, I was reading a blog the other day and while it was somewhat political, it was from the perspective of a game designer comparing a puzzle and a game. A quote from it: "A game is an activity where, if fairly constructed, two sides given the same advantages will have a roughly equal chance to win. A puzzle is an activity where, if fairly constructed, one side will have all the advantages, except that the disadvantaged side is expected to win."
Your DM has forgotten that he's playing a game, not presenting a puzzle. His One True Solution is not compatible with a game like D&D. I recommend finding another group. When you do, tell this DM why you're leaving the group directly but politely so that he can learn. |
