My friend brought up a question about a bag of holding that we received in game. He wanted to know what happened if you turned a bag of holding inside out. I know it's a dumb question but I want to know what happens.

the universe implodes upon itself...

or everything falls out in a comical fashion, (the imploding would be cooler)

Everything falls out and the bag is emptied, it doesn't work until it is turned inside right again.

What your friend shoudl worry about is placing a bag of holding into any other extra-dimensional space, as there are very bad results from doing so.

Yea there are no longer any problems with bags of holding or haversacks being turned inside out, put in each other etc. The game has become very bland in the built in flavor. If your DM wants to institute something cool. I personally find the whole bag in a bag thing annoying and say the bags just don't go in.
How about the haversack being better than the bag of holding now? Neat.

in second edition it would cause a short term rupture in dimensions creating a vortex that was 15 by 15 feet and pulled things withing 50 of feet towards it for 10 rounds, obliterating anything that entered it.

might not be exact might of been a 5 foot vortex pulling all within 15 feet into it

we once destroyed an evil artifact by placing it in a bag of holding then dropping that bag into a bigger bag of holding from a great distance away.

This was honestly our idea for an artifact, hence why we asked (I was the friend)
Much simpler than killing 5 uber dragons

I dont believe in it causing disasters, or else some demon or bored shopkeep would have been destroyed long ago. what happens is you put a bag in another bag, thats it. or fill it with furniture throw it at some orcs, shoot arrow and wait for explosion of compressed junk.

According to the 'official answer' on the D&D podcast to this very question (one of the 'quick rules response' sections), if you turn it inside-out, everything inside falls out. Including the goblin archivist whose job it is to keep all the contents safe and organised, and who is an agoraphobe who pleads to be returned to the bag. =J

Yeah, but like...how far does the inside stretch?

It is said that it's a normal bag when inside-out - the magic only works when it's 'aligned' correctly. A bit like a magical bow that's been de-stringed is just a fancy piece of wood. And string, presumably. :D

I would rule that nothing happens, the Bag is just a component of the enchantment it actual holding space is a pocket dimension with its entrance inside the bag, turning the bag inside out prevents anything being put in or taken out of the bag by temp cancelling out the enchantment.

I thought in the old editions that when two transdimensional objects were placed one in the other - the party was shot into the astral plane, and theyre lucky if they end up beside eachother

I, as a DM, house rule the bag of holding bomb out. The bag of holding is just space* twisted about, so it is physically impossible to invert a bag of holding, but you can dump it.

*Gravity is something of space being bent and I hear this and that about inertia, so all problems fixed.

My players asked, after I described how much it could hold, how big is the opening.

The idea was if the party could fit in it, the elderan would just carry the bag and teleport them everywhere. !!!

Ok... so turning the bag inside out won't destroy the universe...

Would this do??

Step 1: Get a Bag of Holding.
Step 2: Create a small "Leomund’s Secret Chest"
Step 3: Hide the chest inside the Bag of Holding.
Step 4: Use the ritual to summon the chest.
Step 5: Open the Chest and place the Bag of Holding inside.
Step 6: Close the chest.
Step 7: Unsummon the chest.

Any ideas on what this can cause??

Well, actually, no clue, but that's a real mind bender and reminds me of that futurama episode with the universe in the box.

Well, that's a very small chest.
I can think of some possibalities...

The chest goes back into the bag of holding and the bag of holding is left in the chests place.

Both completly disappear, recalling the chect, you can take the bag out. This creates a safe way to hide something - so could be fun for the story.

The chest won't go back. What if the chest was in a hole, then the hole was filled with dirt, what would happen?

Both completly disappear forever, possibly causing some kind of force explosion in some void somewhere. Pehaps after exploading and destroying the bag all the items are spontasly combustaed out of where the bag was, and all the items are destroyed in someway.

Not quite, both demiplanes exist within the Eathreal plane and may be accessed thusly, or with a gate spell.

If you insert as step 4.5 having a creature crawl into the bag of holding, once the chest has been unsummoned, you can have the creature crawl out of the bag of holding into the chest, then have the creature remove the chest from the bag, giving you a chest which is inside itself.

If you then summon the chest, you can open the chest and remove the chest from itself, giving you two chests that are the same object. In theory, anything put inside one chest is also inside the other chest, making a cheap and effective permanent portal, if you can make the chest large enough.

If you then put each chest (which is really one chest) into two bags of holding, and then summon them both, and put the bags inside the chests, you have a tree structure, where each chest contains itself twice. You have the creature pull one chest out of the bag, leaving the other inside, then summon the chest and pull out the freed chest, which is now an infinite tree of chests which are all the same chest.

OMG, it hurts!!!

But damn I want to try this with my GM. The physics involved as he tries to contemplate this would be something.

EDIT: On further contemplation, summoning the chest would make the chest no longer inside of itself... So you'd still only have one chest, but when you unsummon it, the chest goes inside of itself.... Interesting...

How is the chest supposed to fit inside of it self? If you make it collapsible, wouldn't both versions collapse at the same time, thereby negating the saved space?

That is the way my DM let me do this, in this way I had two uses

1- Secure chest. It just doestn't exist until summoned.
2- We got a gem pretty important for some demon, also, unbreakable. So I made the Chest of Holding trick and never called back. =)
