Baleful Transposition + Abrupt Jaunt = Am I Reading It Right?

Our last session ended with us opening the door to a large chamber and inside we saw an evil wizard surrounded by undead servants (I am assuming he is a necromancer but who knows). Our DM likes to end on cliff-hangers....

I am playing a human conjurer, and have taken the abrupt jaunt feat. I want to make sure I am reading the rules right about what I want my first move to be (I am first in initiative order).

I want to cast Baleful Transposition on the wizard to switch places with me. Assuming he fails the Will save, he and I would swap places. I then want to use abrupt jaunt (as an immediate action), to jaunt back behind my fighters.

First: Can I do that?

Second: Since the evil wizard hasn't had his first turn yet, he is considered flat-footed even after the transposition right? I know the movement doesn't provoke AoO...so that helps.

Third: Would abrupt jaunt invoke an AoO from any undead around me before I jaunt? I'm not sure on this. My guess is no since I don't think dimensional door doesn't provoke AoOs.

Thanks for any insight.

Yeah. The transposition is a standard action, and the Jaunt an immediate. IIRC, you are a viable target for Baleful Trans. I see no problem.

Yep. Until his turn comes up, he is flat-footed.

Third: Would abrupt jaunt invoke an AoO from any undead around me before I jaunt? I'm not sure on this. My guess is no since I don't think dimensional door doesn't provoke AoOs.

No. Immediate Magic is not casting a spell or a Spell Like ability. It is Supernatural Ability. (Again, IIRC, and I'm sure I do.) So the use does not provoke.

Everything LSMFT said is spot on.

I just have a few other thoughts on it...

Say you Cast Baleful Transposition on the Wizard. He *IS* a Wizard... his Will save is likely to not suck. You stand a good chance of Wasting your first round, while he is flat footed, by casting a spell that does no good. At least part of being a clever wizard is to know and understand your spells and your tagets. You know your Baleful Transposition spell requires you to overcome a subjects personal will to work. You also know that, was a Wizard yourself, spellcasting have STRONG wills, and spells that attack their Willpower are not the smartest course of action.

That said... say you cast it on him. He is now among your friends (all fleshy and ready to be beat on) and you are amoung his undead (also all fleshy and ready to be beat on.) Ok... you want to Abrupt Jaunt back to your friends... can you? Baleful Transposition has a MUCH greater range then Abrupt Jaunt. You can pull him across the room to your friends... but once your there among his undead... YOU will only be able to Abrupt Jaunt 10 ft away. Is it going to be enough? I mean, for this to work, basicly your party and his part would have to literaly be directly on both sides of the door... which seems unlikely. However... if once you swap spots with the Wizard (which again is doubtful in the first place) is the spot you will find yourself in, next to all the undead... is 10 ft going to get you out of range of them? If so you can cast the Baleful Transposition, switch with the Wizard, Cast the Abrupt Jaunt to get away from the Undead... and then use your move action to get back behind the 'meat sheilds' in your party... assuming you have enough movement to get all this done.

So, while your plan MAY work... it requires some luck on the Baleful Transposition spell, and then some favorerable conditions in the enviroment to pull it all off.

Good luck.

I've been looking forward to using that combo for quite a while with my conjurer build as well.
IIRC Balefull Trasportation doesn't require you to be targetted. So you might as well swap the wizard with your party tank.

Another way is to cast fly prior to BT.
Switch places, jaunt 10' up, fly wherever you like, take no melee attacks.

Your right about not needing to use yourself as the 'other' transported... but there are some good reasons to do so, especialy in this case.

1. If you switch with yourself, you only have to deal with one saving throw. If his party 'Tank' dosn't wanna be teleported, he can make a save.

2. If he dumps the tank in with the Undead, the Tank might start getting whailed on. Granted, thats what Tanks do... but what if some of em are ghouls or some other such nasty? If the Tank gets drop in the middle of an undead pile and screwed because of it, expect him to be pretty peeved, IF he lives.

That would work well... but he is first in the init order, and he wants to get this off before the baddies get to act... so no time to cast fly.

I still think targeting the enemy spellcaster with a Will Save spell is not going to be the best move here tho.

The undead will be flat-footed also, and unable to make attacks of opportunity. Just run back to your friends. You don't even need Abrupt Jaunt, unless there is no path through them. This is a pretty funny idea. If it works, it should be quite a surprize for the necro (likely his last :D ).

THATS a good point...

I still think the Baleful Transposition spell on the Wizard is a bad idea... cuz I think your looking at a 50/50 chance of getting the outcome you desire. However, if it works... and the Undead are are flat footted also... absolutly just use your normal move to get away... and Save the Abrupt Jaunt for what might happen later in the round.
