| #1ZardnaarJan 11, 2009 3:03:38 | What are some of the basic class/race combos you can build in 4th ed that are effective? I didn't poos this in CO as I'm just after some basic ideas for the heroic level tier. We played again today and the Dwarf fighter in the party has taken axe based powers and tanks around in full plate. With his racial abilities, dwarven armor, and various other things he can be quite tough to take down and deals decent damage with an executioners axe. Also eyeing up Eladrin soldier with the right racial feats or maybe a tempest fighter. Fighters are easy like that though so any odd fighter builds or any other class/race combination I would be interested in the more off the wall the better as long as they are somewhat effective in their chosen role (control, damage AC, tanking whatever). Nothing to detailed as I don't need to stun lock Orcus or anything. Thanx. |

| #3comaetilicoJan 11, 2009 5:16:09 | effective? well... right now all martial classes are effective with any race (or with most of them) the "Martial Power" book has a lot of racial feat and racial paragon for the races that naturally don't seem to be the 1st choice for a fighter... an example: thiefling warrior... the thiefling has stat bonus for int and cha... 2 useless stat for a fighter... but the new feat in the MP make of a thiefling warrior a nice defender with a good damage output (thanks to the ability to use his racial power against a marked target as long as he is marked...) thanks to the "no racial malus to stat" every race can be effective with a right build... yes... dwarf battlerage are the best WALL in the game... but they aren't the BEST fighter... ask a dwarf battlerage to catch the controller behind the enemy line... he will look at you saying that u are crazy... ask the same to an eladrin fighter... he will do it without a problem... but don't ask him to stand with in front more than 2 melee opponent... and so on... the 4th edition race system let any (or most) of the races to be functional with every class... some race came out with more intuitive build... but looking deep into the feat list u can came out with interesting and effective build with each race/class... right now this is true for martial thanks to the MP... in a couple of months with the Arcane power we can easily say the same for arcane classes... |

A human can be used for just about any class well, but the third at-will power currently says your class either needs to be mono-attack-stat reliant (fighter, wizard) or has some big bonus to both attack stats (balanced cleric, balanced ranger, strength rogue). As splat books increase the at-will count, the number of classes in which humans prove lacking will decrease. For other races, you either want an attack stat or the most relevant secondary and some useful side benefits. Dwarves make great fighters because though lacking the strength, their stat pumps are both relevant, and their minor action second wind means they can be more resilient without losing damage output. Elves similarly have a lot of synergy, especially with MP's boost in shift-granting effects. It's hard to just link a race and a class, though, because most of the balance differences beyond bad stat choices are basically finding good power, feat, and item synergies and perhaps even more importantly the party synergies that can easily outperform individual strengths. |

Alternativley warlord, rogue, or even ranger. Tiefling swordmage, dark pact fey or star pact warlock, wizard, chr paladin, artful dodger rogue. Elf:Bow ranger, Cleric, rogue, could make a really good fighter as well as wis is secondary stat for fighter. Eladrin: Rogue, Tactical warlord, Wiz, Sword mage, tempest fighter would not be a bad idea as their racial gives them mobility, or bow ranger as they still get the dex bonus. Dwarf: Fighter, cleric, oddly enough ranger, hell pact lock: Actually a dwarven warlock with a hexhammer would be an interesting but effective build. Dragonborn: Paladin, fighter, warlord are the obvious choices. Beast Master ranger, or chr based warlock would also be a very good choice for them. Heck Rogue would work as well as they get a bonus to both secondary stats for rogues. Half Elf:Battle rager fighter, Paladin, Warlock. Multi classed with spell plague works really really well for half elves as well. Artful dodger rogue is not a bad choice either. Humans: Anything. Especially with classes that key off of one main stat, aka wizard, rogue, fighter, swordmage. Best single racial feat of the game Action surge this feat alone is worth playing a human or halfelf Drow: Rogue is obvious, ranger, darkpact warlock, warlord, chr based paladin. As you can see every race has a number of classes that work for them, some of which would be oddball choices that you would not think of but not only work but provide for some interesting unique characters. The other answer is no race is bad at any class. Any race can be effective with any class. |
| #6ZardnaarJan 11, 2009 12:32:01 | Its not to hard to marry a racial package to a class based on their ability score modifiers and racial package. Genasi swordmage, Dragonborn warlord or melee class, Eladrin rogue etc Just wondering about the different sub builds of various classes like pact based warlocks or vaerious weapon techniques for Fighters or varients in Martial Power for the classes. |

Genasi swordmage, Dragonborn warlord or melee class, Eladrin rogue etc See any class works with any build. Why go with just whats optimimum? 4e is not like 3e where you have to optimize to even be effective. |
| #8mouthymercJan 11, 2009 14:04:31 | I haven't run into any combinations that are not effective. That is one of the things I like best about the new edition. Any race can be any class and be effective. Some races have leanings towards some classes, but this is not to the point that they become the "duh" choice. Also, no race is an obviously bad choice for any particular class. I find this to be a big feature this time around. |
| #9vaalingrade_ashland_02Jan 11, 2009 14:13:55 | Regardless of the CO board's mathcraft, Tiefling inspirlords and taclords rock. |
| #10thegreatgalstaffJan 15, 2009 19:42:45 | don't forget polearm momentum fighters (any race/weapon or vigor build) and Heavy blade Opportunist. that's the standard for effective fighters now. |
