Hi gamers!
I just want to know:
If you could build the "Perfect" gaming room, how would it look like?
Cobblestone floor(real or fake?)
Oaken table?, squared or rectangle?
Changable walls to resemple various enviroments(wood, City, dungeon?)
Overhead projector?
Large projector screen?
Any odor devices?
Smoke canon?
Option for laptops?

How does your "perfect gaming room" look like?
Money is not an option!!!

Well obviously, it would be high in a castle tower. There would be a large, oval table, and very comfortable seats -- but keeping with the medieval theme. Light would come from the high stained-glass windows, or from the many lit torches circling the wall.

At the DM's seat, there would be a little wooden filing cabinet, which would also offer a little extra table space.

Off to one side would be the most important D&D element ever - the privvies! This is critical because on the opposite side of the room from the privvies is the industrial-sized pantry and several kegs. It would be a matter of seconds to grab a snack and a drink -- such activities will no longer disrupt the game!

A cozy fireplace would keep the tower room warm in cold weather, and the high winds blowing past the archer's slits would keep the tower cool in the summer.

But beneath the medieval-themed furniture and facade, there would be hidden surround-sound speakers, a concealable 52" HD screen, and WiFi access -- in case we need to check the internet for some quick info or watch the Lord of the Rings on BluRay during dinner break!

Also adding to the technology would be the HD projector, aimed at the table. The DM simply uses his Tablet PC to draw updates to the map, saving HOURS of drawing, erasing, or resetting bumped tables.

And of course, there would be tapestries adorning empty wall spaces.

Mine would look, at a glance, like a spacious, well-lit office. One full wall would be a convex set of window panels looking out over a nice view (it'd probably be on the 2nd floor of my house, with the wall looking out over my extensive private gardens). The floor would be marble tile with heated water tubes flowing through it, and the walls paneled in teak and maple. In the center of the room would be a modular table that could be set up as a large conference-style table or a single small gaming table depending on need.

Each player's gaming chair would have wide armrests with a drink holder/food tray on one side, and a character sheet/reference book tray on the other. The chairs would be comfy-bottomed but have high, straight backs to prevent overlounging. At each player's spot in the table there would be a slightly recessed dice-rolling spot; the bottom of it would be magnetised, and the House Dice would be iron. Yeah baby.

The 'centerpiece' of the table would be a rolly-around gridboard. There'd be several of different sizes kept along the side of the room as display tables when not in use. Underneath the tabletop would be a series of slide-out replacement tops with premade 3d terrain on them. To use a terrain piece, you'd slide out the drawer and then plop it down on top of the table. These would probably be modular for rearrangement, but that's a story for another thread.

All around the room would be attractive display cases holding showpiece miniatures and terrain features. There'd be several closets, cunningly disguised to match the wall paneling, containing additional stuff in rolling teak toolboxes.

Finally, the DM chair would be very "Evil CEO" looking. At its feet would be a large chest of drawers coming up to the tabletop, filled with various and sundry miniatures. The arms of the GM chair would be tables in themselves, with one arm covered in clipboard-like clips for holding notes and two different 'open book holders' with little arms to hold a book open to a specific page. There'd be a quartercircular bookshelf behind the GM chair, coming up to the height of the chairback, and containing a solid collection of RPG books as well as a few more display miniature pieces.

There'd be a central sound system controlled from the GM chair's notes-arm, hooked up to my iMac in the other room.

I think that about covers it.

Aw...

Anyway, my ideal gaming room? Well, if money's not an option, I might have to spring for a holo-table. Like what they have in the earliest part of Yu-Gi-Oh (like it or loathe it, the high tech table is worthy of stealing). If I need to stick to current technology, though....

Well, some sort of table indentation so dice don't roll out. Or maybe the iron dice + magnetic surface Erk_ has. It would also function as a library, replete with gaming books, fantasy novels, and everything a geek could want. Including some more classic literature - mythology (and not just Greek/Roman), Don Quixote, The Odyssey, The Tempest, etc. And yes, it would have a fake book that opens a secret door behind the bookshelf. Probably a nice, plush carpeting. Really soft.

I'll keep an eye out for more ideas on my ideal game table.

Think with your head on that one. I don't think you'd include "Terrorist Camp" as a good place, even with a girlfriend's presence. It'd probably be horrible for D&D to be in a Terrorist Camp.

Well, first of all, I'd say that the table would need to be very specific in shape. It'd need to be sizeable yet not too spacious, because it would be in a rounded u-shape, although there would be space for a grid of some sort to be rolled out on it while still permitting writing and character sheet space to players. The point of the table's odd shape is that a DM can approac the grid close without leaning over players' shoulders or leaning over awkwardly in general.
Second of all, as long as it's a comfortable space with few ongoing distractions, this table and a good set of chairs are all the room needs to come with.

I like Trei's tv and wifi projector ideas!

However, for a table, I'd say round/oval and lower than the average table; about coffee table height. However, it'd have to be specially modified so that you can place drinks on a little tray holder just under the ledge where the players site! (To prevent drinks being spilled on other people's sheets!)

Chairs would range from light weight couches to light arm chairs, for those players that like bunching on a couch or sitting solo; light weight so that they can be easily moved about as desired.

Massive bookcase. No need for explanations why.

A phone with several fast food delivery joints on speed dial.

A small kitchen with oven.

Finally, a large window on 1 side of the room with very thick black curtains and a large digital wall clock on another wall.

I would like a series of gridded tables where you can slide back one square on the grid and a wall on a spring pops out. (the top of the square would have to slide down the side like a roller door) The wall can be removed though to leave a hole there. You now have the basic elements of your room. Under the table would be a series of draws with more room dressing features and selections of minis in some sort of order so you can actually find them. There will of course be other pieces so you can change the shape of the rooms to non square shapes. Above would be a projector so the floors etc actually look like cobbles or forests etc.

Thinking about it, it would be cool if the grids were waterproof so you could even fill up some with water.

I really like the idea of books etc being part of the chair, possibly a lap table like they have in planes would work, but one that will hold your stuff when you put it away so once you have claimed your seat for the night or campaign they are yours even if you run a bit late.

There would be lots of room for drinks but probably not food. Maybe a soft drink tap in the DMs chair (like you see in bars) so he can refresh people's drinks but only if they behave.

Card table (the hexa/octo-gonal ones with felt in center),
some comfortable rolling chairs (for spinning in circles/chair races),
fridge with a keg inside and a tap going through its door*,
some DiGiorno's/hotpockets in said fridge's freezer,
'back up' dice that no one uses (they're unlucky),
easel pad pregridded to 1" squares (BBEG fights, amirite?),

Oh wait...

*and i was told i didn't need to buy a drill!

Oh yes, another detail for my ideal game room: an assortment of candy dispensers like from the old penny candy shops. You know, the kind that you can open up and scoop out a bagful. Why? Because one of my DMs had the ingenious ideas of using gummy bears in place of miniatures for all the bad guys. If you kill it, you get to eat it. Kill stealing is now truly a crime. Anyway, the idea proved so popular that the other DM I game with (he was a player in the other campaign) has adopted it. I'd go for an assortment of candies, to help differentiate monsters (though color can do that too). Heck, if I have unlimited funds, I'd get a good enough supply that I can even change color/candy to indicate bloodied, and you get to eat one for bloodying a target too.

Chairs would have to include a little desk thing you could leave your character sheet on and write on, preferably with a clip on them. My college has some comfy chairs like that on rollers. More like a couch than a desk. What do you call a sofa-like chair for one person?

Okay. The table would have a cube T.V. like in a hockey rink. The DM chair would have a computer attached that could fold down from the armchair. The computer would be attached to the T.V. but it would only show a player's view of the map so I could look up rules in the electronic database I have programmed in and my caimpaign notes would be in there too. The player would have reclinable chairs with a drink holder and a fold down desk for character sheets and dice. Everybody would have a basket of candy that gets constantly refilled by a dispenser under the table. There would be surround sund audio system that played different tracks at the push of a button.

Now, who will contribute to my funds for this project?:D

That depends on the terrorists. Do they play DnD, too?
