I have just bought the players handbook and have gotten a bit stuck on what class to pick. As a standing magic player i remembered this sight and the forums and so came on here.

I have narrowed down my choices to either Fighter, rogue and warlock.

I would play a fighter as i have never played one in the other games i play and thought i might try something different.

I would play a rogue as i am good at roleplaying stealthy people and enjoy them.

Warlocks seem fun in the destruction they can cause.

I also need help on my race, if i take fighter i will almost definately be dragon bourn.

if i take rogue i will either take eladrin or tiefling, and tiefling for warlock.

If you really have no personal preference for one over the other, then roll a die to decide for you.

I will note though, that your choice can be made much simpler by finding out what other players in your group would want to be. That should narrow your choices.

As Kouk said, you'll find it useful to talk to the other players. Nothing wrecks a campaign faster than having five players all show up with, say, rogues. (Although it was fun while it lasted!) Make sure there's a good balance between Leaders, Strikers, Defenders, and Controllers, and things will go more smoothly. Otherwise, play with what draws you the most, and switch off next campaign for something different. Repeat until you find something that you love. Or, heck, you might be the kind of player that just enjoys something different each time.

Welcome to D&D, and have fun!
