| #1arcweilderApr 10, 2008 15:04:27 | Hey everyone i'm slightly new to the d&d game and can't decide what type of character class to choose i was thinking of going with either a wizard or sorcerer i really wish there was a death knight class but any suggestions on what to pick would be helpful ![]() |
| #2lsmftApr 10, 2008 15:52:05 | You are new to the game, you should start with a sorcerer if the magic-users apeal to you. (It is about having fun; play what looks fun.) I say sorcerer because it is easier to learn to play with than a wizard. People are going to say the wizard (and then the specialist wizard) are better because they are more powerful. And in some ways they are right. But you're new and the sorcerer is far easier to learn with. |
| #3arcweilderApr 10, 2008 15:55:48 | well i've played like 2 or 3 sessions with some friends the dm made me a warrior and i asked if i could change cause the front lines person just isn't my vial of potion (corny joke) i'm more of a person who would like to sit back and blast away at on opponent |
| #4syrinthApr 10, 2008 20:57:35 | Either a sorcerer or a warlock if you have access to the Complete Arcane would probably be best for now. I'm an arcanist as well, melee sucks XD |

Mix Black Guard PrC for some insane saves. Another poster did make a Death Knight Class even though there is already a Death Knight Template (that predates WoW). Look up the Template (MM III I think, or MM II) and any errata for it. See if your DM will allow you to eventually gain that template. I'll look for a link for the other players Death Knight class for you.. |
| #6iserithApr 11, 2008 10:17:23 | I always wanted to play a rogue/sorcerer with maxed out ranks in Bluff, the Improved Feint feat, and a bunch of cool touch spells like shocking grasp and vampiric touch (especially sudden empowered). I'd roleplay him as a dashing character, but an inveterate liar often incapable of telling the truth even when it served him to do so. He may not be a typical powergamer build, but in the right campaign, that would be a fun character to play. |

| #9the_black_handApr 11, 2008 13:45:26 | Nah, I'm not one for TV. Ah, that line is said there is pretty much a quote from from one of the characters in the show, only remember it because he was pretty funny, and he died irl about not too long after that episode. |

Oops, maybe I unknowingly channeled him! My mom always told me that D&D was evil... |
| #11nordicbirchApr 11, 2008 14:28:24 | Dread Necromancer http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/cwc/20060627a might interest you, depending on what flavor you're looking for with death knight. Otherwise, for first caster sorcerer or warlock are the easiest although some care in spell/invocation selection is needed. |
| #12callistaApr 11, 2008 21:35:08 | Go for it--my first character was a sorcerer! ![]() |
| #13necroramoApr 12, 2008 13:37:41 | If you were thinking of going with a wizard or sorcerer, then do that ![]() Sorcerers are a bit easier to use IMO, so that might be good for starters, but it's entirely up to your personal preferences. Also, be sure to check what the party you're joining is already playing (if a new party is forming, do collaborate with them on its formation), so that you're not fulfilling a party role that is already being taken up and not leaving a hole in the party open (as in, there is no trapfinder) |
| #14sunic_flamesApr 12, 2008 16:30:21 | Actually, a wizard is easier for a new player. Why? You aren't hindered as much by bad choices. If you screw up spell selection, you're out of luck for a day at most. After which you know better. Do the same for a sorcerer, and you only get nine chances ever to fix your mistakes. The first comes at level 4, the rest every even level after. Suffice it to say it is for advanced players who know exactly what they want in advance and can make it work. Along the same lines, Fighters are presented (falsely) as newbie friendly. They're even easier to mess up as they can't fix their bad choices at all. The correct newbie friendly melee is a Barbarian, who comes with everything he needs already to kick ass and is simple and straightforward to play. Course, he's still not the most stellar character in the book, but he works as a means of learning the system. Same with the wizard. |
| #15MrCustomerApr 12, 2008 17:08:20 | Yuu wish there was a Death Knight? If you are playing Core only or want it simple without having to read through Splat books then I suggest you start off with a Paladin, build him a few levels and then do some horrible deed, and lose your Paladin powers at level 5ish. btw this is funner if you don't tell your DM before hand. Then, since you lost your Paladin powers, take class levels in the prestige class BlackGuard, which is essentially a Death Knight. If that is not an option (some DMs don't allow evil characters) then I would suggest a Sorceror. Sorcerors are simpler then Wizards because they have smaller spell lists and you don't have to pre-plan what spells to prepare each day, this keeps things less complicated as you learn the basics. |
| #16sunic_flamesApr 12, 2008 18:16:11 | Blackguard - anti paladin, not death knight. Also, he may not want PRCs if he's aiming for a simple approach. And of course if it isn't allowed he is now a Fighter sans bonus feats aka completely screwed. Bad idea. |
