| #1ratchetsgJul 23, 2009 13:34:51 | Hi there, I wondered if anyone could offer me some advice on the situation I currently find myself in. I am playing in campaign that is centred around a Tiefling empire. My first character was a Tiefling Inspiring warlord. He was the most exciting, fun and interesting character I have played in my 15 years of playing DnD. HE was strong, smart, charasmatic and really let me interact with the game world in a way that suited me perfectly. Then an elf shot him in the head. Well a lot of elves shot him in the head quite a few times. Due to the state of the game world he cant be resurected. this is because nearly everyone is dead (in the last month 98% of the world's population has been killed by a disease). After my warlord died, The DM told me he would really like it if the party had at least one Tiefling in it, so he ould really appreciate it if I came back as a Tiefling. No in not the biggest fan of Tieflings as a race(the last one I had as given to me as part of a one-shot that became a campaign, but I was able to mold him into the perfect character) but I did so. Since I joined this group 7 years ago I have ALWAYS played the main healer, and more often than not the only person in the group who has been capable of healing and as such I now HATE healing. While 4e has made it much easier to deal with is still hate it with a passion. As my group lacked a healer (it is made up of Archer Ranger, Tempest Fighter, Sorceror and Avenger) I felt oblidged to come back as another healer. SoI rolled up a Tiefling shaman. He lasted two sessions before I had to swap him out, as I really wasnt at all liking the way the class worked. My DM got pretty annoyed that wanted to change character as its not really something we do in our group, but he let me do so. So I came back as a Tiefling Cleric again taking a race and a class I dont really like. I did this again to keep both a Tiefling and a Healer in the party, the former for the DM and the latter for the party. I've played this character for the last 2 months now and I am totally sick of him. I havent even written a background for him. In fact I dont even really have a good idea of what he looks like, and im usually drawing pictures and writing huge backgrounds for characters before I even open the builder. It all really came to a head yesterday when my character was pulled back from the brink of death after I had failed two death saves, and I exclaimed "So close! I was so close!". I wasnt the best thing to say and the DM and I had a bit of a ding-dong about it. After the game we discussed certian options, and he has said that I can swap out my character if I want and I dont have to play a Tiefling. So the issue as it comes to is what do I do? I can come back as any class of the following races Human, Tielfing, Dragonborn, Dwarf, Elf. I understand that if I come back as a class that isnt a leader, the problem of a lack of leader will fix itself organically, but all of the players are quite attached to their characters and I would feel quite guilty if someone lost a PC because of the lack of healer. So basically im totally stuck in what to do. This is the first time in 15 years of playing DnD that I have ever considered stoping playing totally, but I kinda feel that is my only recourse at the moment. |

I don't shy away from kililng a player who did something stupid, but if I'm in your DMs position of seriously ruining someone's experience I either allow the ressurection, let them play a relative of the original, or find a plot related way to ressurect the character that the player's weren't expecting. Yeah it's cheesy; but one of my friends is showing up every week and having no fun at all, what would you do? Anyway; what level is the campaign? cause if you don't want to play a healer there's always the nonconformist half-elf bard. Get your ass into paragon tier, multiclass to hell and back till you have nothing bardic left and you've created a completely seperate class that just so happens to have 2 encounter power heals and a serious feat deficit :D. Not the best idea, but it's different. Option 2: requisition your DM to find a story related way to bring back your old character. Out of character your players may think its Hokis, but in character they should be ecstatic "oh my god! we thought you were gone! we're so happy to see you, what happened?!" and if they're truly having a good time with their current characters the latter should outweigh the former. |
| #3ShiftkittyJul 23, 2009 14:41:18 | Do NOT play a character you don't enjoy. You can tank the whole thing for everyone else. So they don't have a healer? Well, they'd better use those healing surges, then. Carry some healing potions if you must, but don't saddle yourself with something you hate. So the game world mechanics don't allow a resurrection. I'd still see if the DM is up for it. Can't hurt to ask. If, for whatever reason, he says no way, then I'd ask for a character change. He should at least be mindful of the fact that you're not having fun. You've been with these guys for seven years, you deserve some consideration. Thought: See if he'll let your next character be a reincarnation of your older one. No mechanical advantage, but maybe some good RP opportunities. You know, gets a small headache when he sees an elf, flinches when he hears the twang of a string, etc. Maybe he'll allow that if just for the flavor. |
| #4Vilnias_NastavnikJul 23, 2009 16:22:19 | Have you tried the new bard? They help with healing and can shift both enemies and allies around fairly nicely. I NEVER play a bard, but I almost did after seeing another one in action. I was going to be a Shadar-Kai Bard who's entertainment talent was to be a sideshow freak and do wild piercings and other extreme, self-inflicted stunts, lol. |
| #5ace_of_timeJul 23, 2009 16:51:44 | Are you really wanting to play something else or would you be interested in change the character so as not be a healer. Just because you are a cleric doesn't mean you have to go healer. What about the PC gets on your nerves? Maybe we can help change the build so you will like it better. Also the background could be the you are of a different races but were raised by Tiefling care takers. Also a level would be helpful as well. |

| #7ace_of_timeJul 23, 2009 17:14:41 | Is there certain parts of it that give you problems or you don't like the character. I'd say the DM would let you change the race if you explain how you wanted the back ground to work. You could have been a Dragonborn raised by Tieflings and just think that you are a Tiefling because no one has told you different. Maybe the type of dragonborn you are looks so much like them that most never even notice before. You said you don't like healing and you do have healing word as a good back up so you really don't need any other healing powers unless you just would like them. Look at the character and see what parts you would like to change. |

| #9darkdiashiJul 23, 2009 17:30:13 | Do you have DDI? See if he'll go for a Revenant of your original tiefling. Still tiefling, so its not that out there. built in plot device for bringing him back. you can 'reclaim' his personality as he regains memories, adventuring with his friends. he should let you do it, both to preserve the fun and to preserve the party |
| #10funkyvJul 23, 2009 20:13:59 | What races and classes were you looking at going for? If you want to play a non-leader/healer tell the rest of the group to stock up on potions or items that heal. |
| #11ratchetsgJul 24, 2009 6:05:10 | Im considering bringing back my old character as a Revenant hybrid Barbarian/Warlord. His Rage was always a big part of the character when he was alive (he was kinda based on Dirty Harry. A good person who was willing to do pretty much anything to "fix" things, and it tended to end up with rivers of blood and corpses). Not sure how it would play out in the rules though. :/ |

Sounds like an intersting character. Not sure how it would play out in the rules though. :/ What do you mean? |
| #13drackthorJul 24, 2009 16:15:43 | Doesn't look like your group has a Defender either, though. You could play a Tiefling Paladin focusing on Charisma, and while it does have some minor healing capabilities (Lay on Hands), it's a very fun class, and fairly malleable when it comes to concept. He could be a champion of a deity, or a stalwart defender of this tiefling empire. |
