Hi there!

We're starting a new campaign (at 4th lvl) tomorrow and I'm pretty much at a loss what class to play.

I don't know the exact setup, only class / race and a few minor comments on the playstyle - here is what I know by now:

Human Fighter (one handed weapon + shield)

Deva Wizard (war wizard)

Deva Cleric (pacifist)

Drow Assassin

I think my GF will play her Drow rogue as the old char sheet is somewhere under a pile of books in my living room, so she doesn't have to create a PC from scratch (she hates doing that).

My thoughts were that the party might be a bit on the low side of damage and control, so i thought about predator druid or sorcerer. But a taclord might out very well too. What would YOU play?

I have access to nearly all published books, but not to DnDinsider and Dragon Magazines. We get a free bonus expertise feat of our choice and anything is allowed.

Looking forward to the input!

I'd probably go for a Longtooth Shifter two-blade Ranger.  Flank with the fighter as much as possible, since the cleric will definitely be able to keep me alive with the fighter's excellent ability to draw attacks.

You were right in your assessment that the group looks like it will be low on damage, but with a wizard and a pacifist cleric, control should not be a problem.

Sword and board fighters aren't known for their damage output, the cleric will provide little to absolutely no damage output, wizards can be capable and assassins are questionable at best for damage so that will most likely be the area the party will need the most help in.

Just in general, I find that where tactics are concerned, and lets face it, tactics are everything in a 4e encounter, it is better to have more melee characters than ranged characters. At the most there should be a 1:1 ratio which you could achieve if you wanted to play a ranged character with how the rest of that party is set up (just be aware that things could get dicey).

Personally, I think that I would go with an avenger because you do have some ability to control the battlefield with teleportation, you can deal some pretty decent damage, and you almost never miss because you get to roll 2d20's for most of your attacks. (Did I mention that they still have one of the highest AC's in the game?)

Of your suggestions I would choose a sorcerer. Sorcerers are one of my favorite classes and if you wanted to solve the problem of not having enough people close up, dragon magic sorcerers can be quite good at that.

I would go for a highly mobile melee striker.  It's been mentioned that the group might be a little low on damage, but what I'm looking at here is getting a character who will break past the enemies front line and shut down enemy artillery.  I've had some great mileage using a thaneborn barbarian to do that, and barbarians are made of win, imo, so that's what I would play.
