I am new to 4E so I am still learning so I figured I would try to get some input here. We rolled up char's last night and I am undecided on what to play. I am not sure what would synergize best with the group. First here is the group comp

Shaman
Rogue
Swordmage
Wizard

I was going to play a rogue or swordmage originally but figured I would be nice since other folks wanted to play those classes. My questions are as follows.

Is a Earth Warden here too redundant as another defender?

Would a Rage Barb or Lock be good here?

You have full house of role representatives. So pick what you want and go to town.

Now if im looking for group optimising id go with striker, then defender, then controler and last leader.

Aditional defender is not redundant. Since there are no classes dead on damage (only strikers are above norm in this regard) aditional defener gives even more of battlefield control. If you go Earth route you will possible be strurdier than swordmage which will allow him to pick up more striker powers. If you go Barb (striker with Def) you will boost up party damage output by alot. And for Lock its little bit harder to tell. If you go infernal (and I presume vestige) you will act as semi defender if cha locks then more like controler.

But in the end pick what you want you wont hinder group anyway.

Bard I think would be most fun....I really like how warden and shaman work together though....druid is a thought for your group as well. Avenger and barbarian too. In any case id opt for tough reliable melee strikers or the extreme versatility of the bard.

Thanks for the responses thus far.

I think I am leaning towards playing a striker at this point, although the warden would be fun.

Would a super charger barbarian fit well here?

A barbarian of any sort fits fine.

Not only for doubling up on the striker roll, which will make combat go faster, but in providing more melee characters which makes it easier for your rogue friend to get combat advantage and more likely that the swordmage gets to actually feel like being a defender is worth it.
