| #2ToeSamaJul 25, 2011 23:15:58 | Well, it's kinda hard to offer advice or help on such an open ended request. So I'll give a common piece of advice and say to pick up a copy of Heroes of the Fallen Lands and read through it. Then post and rules you're having a hard time following up and we'll help you figure them out ![]() Also, do you have a group to play with? They can probably aid you better than we can in getting initially familiar with the game and how it flows. |
| #3MysteriaJul 26, 2011 2:09:20 | D&D is a roleplaying game. If you know what a roleplaying computer game is, well: D&D is the same, except that for one player steering one or a group of heroes through computer generated quests, it's several players each steering one character through quests given by a real person, the dungeon master or DM. I'd say download and read the Quick Start Rules. |
| #4RedSiegfriedJul 26, 2011 13:26:33 | It sounds like the Starter Set is perfect for you: www.wizards.com/dnd/Product.aspx?x=dnd/p... Costs $20 and explains everything you need to know about what D&D is and how to get started playing. It comes with everything you need to get started, too. With this set you don't need anyone else to play with at first but once you complete the adventure, which explains the basic rules along the way, you can find some friends and play in a group too. The set is sold in hobby and game shops everywhere and also at Wal-Mart and Target stores. This thread: community.wizards.com/go/thread/view/758...! also has lots of good information for new players. You can also see if there is a Dungeons and Dragons Encounters session being run near you and attend that. You don't have to know how to play to attend, can attend as often or as little as you wish and everything you need will be provided if you don't have it. It's a good time to start since a new "season" of Encounters is starting next week (I think). www.wizards.com/dnd/Event.aspx?x=dnd/4ne... |
| #5mesinockJul 28, 2011 11:55:32 | Dungeons & Dragons is a Table Top Role Playing Game, in which you take and play the role of a character. The game is played is played out in your imagination, with a set of rules which governs time and space within the world your character exists. The game is designed to be played with 2 or more players. Each player plays a character in an adventuring group or party. Generally each character has a specific role to play with in the party, but this is not the role playing aspect of D&D. The role playing aspect comes when you must interact with other characters in the game world, as you will often have talk with them or interact with them in some manner other than just hitting them with a sword. Any way the key things to keep in mind are that the game is played on a table and in your head, with a group of real life people. Have fun, and don't get bent out of shape about the game rules, they only exist as a guidance tool. |
| #6minion_dmAug 04, 2011 16:23:19 | Basically, you should try to find an existing group in your area and ask to play with them. See if you like D&D. If you do, get some books. This for your first game:npcsquid.com/tabletop/5-steps-to-play-yo... |
| #7oxybeAug 05, 2011 8:37:47 | what's an RPG? in short: you and your friends create a shared narrative you can alter through the actions of your characters. one of the players has the role of "dungeon master" and controls the monsters, non-player characters and sets up the scenarios the other players with interact with. the rules exist to create a framework on which to determine if your actions will succeed or fail. the dice exist to add an element of random chance where it's applicable. in layman's terms: you and your buddies pretend you're magical elven princesses who fight tentacle poop monsters with magical rainbows while riding unicorns. who fart skittles. or something. |
| #8pluisjenAug 05, 2011 9:19:32 | D&D is cops and robbers (well, more like elves and demons) with all the "I shot you", "nuh-uh!", "yuh-uh!" replaced with dice rolls. Or well, something like that xD You really have to play it to really understand it. Preferably with some experienced players. |
| #9therion666Aug 09, 2011 10:54:53 | sorry if this is in the wrong area anyway ive been wondering what exactly is DnD i kinda wanna play and i have somewhere to go but what exactly do you do im so confuse can some one explain You make a character that is available in the setting (fighter, wizard, priest, rogue, warlord, warlock and ranger to start with) and create the character that interests you. Think of a fantasy book or story that interests you (Beowulf, Thor, Willo, Lord of the Rings and Conan for example) and create a character that sounds the most Fun to you. The DM (Dungeon master ) presents the world you interact with and how you first meet the other players characters (getting hired by a local lord is a common and well tested start up). The DM tells you what you see and answers any questions about the world around you (e.g "Is there anywhere around that the group can hide if need be?", the DM answers "looking around, there are rocks and a small copse of trees that you could hide in.") THe characters generally try to work together to achieve a goal (stop an evil wizard, find something important, rescue a lost damsel etc) and overall develope your character in the game (e.g a Conan character could start out quite brutish and blunt but develope better manners as he meet more civilised people. There is no defined 'winner' in the group but the group could 'win' by becoming renowned heroes, being given a kings randsom or even becoming kings themselves. Overall Dungeons and Dragons is about having fun with friends. |
