a campaign i play in is about to wrap up, and were going to take the same cast in the same world and continue the story (after some player changes) in 3.5 world. this game was a test for our DM to try out 4e, and after a year and 10 levels, he's not liking it. we still have 2 games running in 4e, so he wants to go back to where he DMs best in 3.5.

im really rusty on 3.5 so i could use some help convering my toon to 3.5. he's a lvl 10 avenger githzeri, censure of persuit, in combat im the very typical striker, picking the biggest meany on the field and hitting it with my hammer till it dies. i optomized the hell out of my athletics check, so we did some house ruling to add falling damage to my hits, and its become a central point to the characters combat style and character style. some very poorly placed natural 1's have made for some VERY hilarious moments in falling and jump attempts, so keeping that style is an absolout MUST. i was thinking playing a paladin, but im not sure what prestiege class would be good to go into, and could use some tips on maximizing my jump check.

im sure we will be limiting some of the books, and for sure most of the dungeon and dragon magazines, so not gonna be TOO optimized level of character creation. ill post later an official list when i get word back from my DM.

thanks for the help everyone!

ok i lied, all official D&D 3.5 books are available, and all magazines.

all d20/pathfinder etc... are barred however.

its lookin like paladin isnt gonna be the best call. stats for the 4e version are currently 10 STR, 14 CON, 22 DEX, 12 INT, 22 WIS, 12 CHA.

is there a 3.5 analogue for ,melee training to use my wis or dex for BAB instead of str?

You can't just use the same stat array for a 3.5 character - you're going to have to rearrange them to put your high scores in the necessary abilities. Also, your stats wouldn't be the same anyway, as 4E gives you a lot more stat increases as you level up than 3.5. (And paladins in 3.5 have to be Lawful Good, so depending on what god you worshipped it might not work for yhour character's personality and backstory.)

The first piece of advice I always give everyone when trying to convert a character between editions is to forget the mechanics. Figure out what the character does from a narrative rather than a mechanical perspective, and then figure out how to do that with the current mechanics. The two editions are far too different mechanically to try carrying anything directly over from one to the other.

I think the only analogue for a lightly-armored big-weapon guy in 3.5 might be the barbarian, unless there's something in one of the Complete books. It's not a divine character, though.

You might consider checking out the Crusader from Tome of Battle - they're heavy armor guys, but they like big weapons and have the same holy warrior fluff as paladins without the alignment restrictions (they just can't be true Neutral). Warhammer is one of the White Raven discipline's preferred weapons. Their class features make them tough rather than highly accurate (like an avenger), but you might consider multiclassing with something. If you're going for a lawful alignment, the Kensai prestige class might be a good fit.

Alternately, if you're willing to try a non-divine character and switch weapons from a hammer to a heavy mace or something else, you could go with a Swordsage, which is a light-armor guy that gets bonuses to AC and damage from their Wisdom.

You should also consider reposting this in the Previous Editions forums for better mechanical advice.
